Repentance and Salvation

As the wind leaves evidence of its unseen presence, so is everyone born of God. The movement of those who are perhaps frustrated with the low ebb of spiritual fervor in our day, has begun to overemphasize and improperly define the place of repentance in salvation. They find themselves micro-managing what is, by definition, the work of the Holy Spirit of God. In this installment of our series, we address the Spirit's work, the need to actually lead people to Christ as we are directed in Romans 10:13ff (by calling) and Hosea 14 (with words). We are not to just clearly tell people the amazing gospel and then let it become a hardening agent in their hearts by failing to compel a response.

Purposeful Prayer

Paul uses Philemon's life as a catalyst to animate his prayers while in his bonds. In so doing, he teaches us many important ways to properly set up our own prayer lives with the proper foundation, focus and with a view toward the fruitfulness God would have us all seek for ourselves and our brethren.

The Heart of the Servant

Paul asks Philemon to receive Onesimus, coming to him with a humble disposition and a holy preoccupation. This disarming approach not only makes a good case for his appeal, but also allows the one being recruited to feel predisposed to a cooperative outcome. Jesus would have us all cultivate these graces as we join arm in arm to further the cause of His kingdom.

Being Part of the Team

Philemon has been hit hard personally and socially by the runaway slave Onesimus. But Onesimus flees to Rome and is won to Jesus by the apostle Paul, a good friend of Philemon's. In the middle of the trauma this ordeal causes, we learn how to function as fellow soldiers and cooperative subjects of our King. We learn too that everyone has value and everything has meaning in our lives. In these verses, we meet the team on the ground and glean some insights on how to effectively bring honor to the Lord Jesus in the crucible.
