Absalom shows himself as a big shot putting a big show. He intervenes on the king's behalf without the authority of the king. He plants the seeds of rebellion into the minds and hearts of the people and ultimately steals their hearts away from king David. He put on a spiritual front but knew how to manipulate the people by acting spiritual. He rallied the malcontents and David unwisely ignored his actions and chose to flee rather than to fight. David thought he had few to stand with him but "all the country wept with a loud voice."

He comes from a disgraced family; a doomed family; a destitute family; a desperate family and joins with a desired family.
Saul Lost God's Mercy Not Soul

David had a short respite from all the wars and did the best thing anyone can do when sitting around thinking--he meditated on God's blessings. He decided that he wanted to build a house for God to dwell in--the Temple that Solomon would later build. The Bible says that Saul lost God's mercy because the kingdom was taken from him and from his sons. His throne would not be established. Just because Saul lost the throne (God's mercy), this does not mean that Saul went to hell...in fact, the Bible seems to teach otherwise. Considering the iniquity committed by Solomon shows that Saul's transgressions were no worse.

Marriage Counseling 101: Critical Spirit

Marriage Counseling from the pulpit--shotgun style on Sunday night. This is the story of Michal, Saul's daughter, as she met David returning to Jerusalem with the ark of God. She saw David dancing "before the Lord" and despised him. When he returned home to "bless his household" she came out to meet him and severely rebuked him. Michal displayed some deep rooted issues with her critical words and spirit. She was malicious and the Bible says that she had no child till the day of her death. Unfortunately, with David's multiplied wives, contrary to scripture, he did not have to seek reconciliation in his own home. A critical spirit is prone to complain, super judgmental, blinded to fixing the problem, lacking discernment and robs everyone of blessings. Once again, the Bible offers all the counseling we need simply by reading it and attending to what it says.

Not Worshiping God God's Way

Second Samuel chapter 6 Man does not get to pick and choose how to worship God. The Bible says that God is a Spirit and man must worship Him in spirit and in truth. This is why church is not about the individual--it is to be all about God. David had a great and noble idea to bring the Ark of God back to him in Jerusalem. So, they made a brand NEW CART and set the Ark of God on it. God clearly said that the Ark was to be carried on staves (Exodus 25:14) but it seemed to be much easier to put the Ark on a cart where the beasts bare the load and burden. In this case, God showed His displeasure by killing a man for his error. We have no reason to think that Uzzah was sent to hell for his error, but God took His mercy away from him because He touched the holy thing.

Capital Punishment Deterrent

Second Samuel chapter 4 introduces Mephibosheth who will later be rewarded with a seat at the king's table; betrayed by a trusted servant because of his disability; lived as one who displayed his true faithfulness and loyalty to the king; and one who was GRACIOUSLY spared by the king. All of these blessings came upon him because of his disability. Isbosheth who was made king by Abner is now assassinated by two of his servants. They believe that David will be pleased by their acts against Saul's son so they bring his head to David. David exhibits his displeasure by instituting capital punishment against these betrayers and murderers. America could learn from all this if pedophiles, rapists and murders received quick justice as punishment for their crimes.

Abner finally recognizes and accepts David as king. Up until this time, he has fought the very thing that he now proclaims is true. These changes are made because it was politically expedient to do so. His choice for king was loosing influence and David was gaining. David and Abner form an alliance but Joab steps in and murders Abner...what a mess!

David is gaining strength while the house of Saul is diminishing. After Abner puts Ishbosheth on the throne, he turns against him alleging that he had gone into Saul's concubine. This is enough to send Abner over to David's side and make an alliance with David to bring the kingdom to him. This chapter also shows the sin of kings who multiply wives to themselves contrary to scripture. Six of David's wives are mentioned by name and yet David demands that Abner get Michal, the wife taken from him by Saul.

2 Samuel 24:1-25 INTRODUCTION: This lesson demonstrates how God looks on pride in His servants and expresses the Lord's desire and requirement for humility. This chapter, when compared with its parallel passage in 1 Chronicles 21:1-30, raises many questions. However, the Bible-believing student approaches these questions with a heart of belief and the faith that God's word is always true. Any supposed discrepancy is a problem with our understanding and never a problem with the scripture.

INTRODUCTION: Like most other men, it would not be long before David would follow down the wrong path. Although David goes down in history as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, kings in Israel's history, the Bible account is brutally honest. Before David's death, we see of the reasons for David's greatness: a charge from the Lord and the mighty men that surrounded him.

INTRODUCTION: At the opening of this lesson, David suffers the consequences of another man's poor choices. Whether or not the Lord was showing David what he had done to others could be debated, but the lesson certainly applied. Before the lesson closes, David was reminded of the battle with which he came to prominence as the Philistines and the brothers of Goliath warred against Israel.

INTRODUCTION: With lost confidence and broken fellowship, the time and effort required for restoration is multiplied from what it took to initially gain that trust. David's restoration as king does not mean that all the struggles have ended. Sometimes the temptations are to run elsewhere to start over. Yet, the right thing to do is to pay the price and do whatever necessary to put things right. Who were sons of Belial?

David Returns to Jerusalem

INTRODUCTION: Who's in charge? Was it Absalom? No, he died hanging from the oak tree. Was it Joab who prompted David to action? No, he was to be replaced by Amasa (2 Samuel 19:13) … maybe. Was it Abishai who desired the death of Shimei? No, Shimei was to be pardoned … for the time being. Was it David? The tribes of Israel hesitated (2 Samuel 19:9-10). Then, David prompted his own tribe of Judah to action (2 Samuel 19:11). David was indeed to be king (2 Samuel 19:22): "for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?" David was in charge. As such, it was to be a day of forgiveness and mercy (Shimei and Mephibosheth). It was a day of grace and blessing (Barzillai and Chimham). Truly David could say, "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD. Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem" (Psalm 122:1-2) as he prepared to ascend from the valley of the Jordan up through the hills of Judah to the gates of Jerusalem.

God Destroys Ahithophel's Counsel 2 Samuel 17:1-29 INTRODUCTION: At the beginning of this chapter, things start out looking pretty grim for David; however, they would not stay that way. 2 Samuel 17:14 offers the key as it reveals the Lord's intent. The Lord would bring evil on Absalom by defeating the counsel of Ahithophel. All of this was in response to David's prayer in 2 Samuel 15:31. We must learn to trust in the same Lord. If God be for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?

INTRODUCTION: Recognizing one's own sin is one of man's most difficult accomplishments. As a case in point, David seemingly experienced little-to-no conviction until Nathan showed him his sin. Nathan's success came by presenting David's sin through a parable with fictitious characters. It was only when David saw his sin in the life of another that he expressed its wickedness and deserved consequences. In the end, God's grace and mercy is going to turn the heart of David and preserve him in doing so.

INTRODUCTION: It had become apparent that parables were the means by which to convince David of his wrongdoing. This time it was not Nathan the prophet through the Lord's leadership, but a woman of Tekoah through Joab's leadership. The results of the first parable involved a repentant king, sorry for his sin. The result of this parable is going to be the reintroduction of a monster named Absalom into the kingdom.

The Sin and Death of Amnon 2 Samuel 13:1-39 INTRODUCTION: The fourfold restoration continues for David in this lesson. First, he lost the baby born to Bath-sheba. In this chapter, David's daughter will be loved, pursued, and defiled by her brother Amnon, and Amnon will be put to death by another of David's sons. Amnon's sin is a living illustration of James 1:14-15—"But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death."

INTRODUCTION: In this chapter, a great man of God in the Bible falls deeply into sin. How could David do such a thing? We all stand astonished, yet none of us is beyond falling into the unthinkable. David simply chose to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and then acted upon the temptations before him. Everyone needs to learn from David in order not to do as he did.

INTRODUCTION: One notes two differing accounts of Saul's death: in this chapter and the one found in 1 Samuel 31:4-5. The previous chapter testifies that Saul died at his own hand, falling on his sword. In this lesson, the account is given that he was killed by an Amalekite. Is there a contradiction in the two accounts? No. The second account is that of the Amalekite who thought he would receive a reward for killing David's enemy. To his surprise, he was instead killed. Did David know he was lying? Perhaps. He covered himself when he said, "Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee" (2 Samuel 1:16). The Amalekite died because he took credit for killing the Lord's anointed. The fact he was lying did not change his fate.
