Salute the Saints

The apostle has arrived at the conclusion of his correspondence. The writer, the date and the recipients of Hebrews will be forever debated. It's impossible to remove it from Paul or one of his associates. And, why try? The emphasis in the last three verses is to be aware of the need to pray for and support all saints, especially those who preach the word. He closed on the highest possible note, grace, which is God's saving favor conditioned alone on Christ.

Just A Few Words

The writer is certain his readers know him. Describing this lengthy correspondence as few words is startling today. It's one of the longest and most detailed letters in the New Testament. Of course, he didn't have a compilation of the 26 NT books. The important thing is it was inspired by God. This message shows some comparisons between Paul's letters and Hebrews. Furthermore, it gives the outline of the book, which is essential to understanding it.

Coming to his final benediction, the apostle gave a final word of encouragement. Saying, beseech, he spoke with a tone and edge of urgency. Exhortation is here best understood as encouragement. He doesn't want them to turn back from the gospel of free and sovereign grace. Neither does he want them to turn against each other. This message explores many of the statements regarding encouragement in the New Testament.

God Working In You

The apostle is making his final goodbye and comes to his first Amen. The apostle is hoping his readers will grow to spiritual maturity. The word translated perfect had a different meaning in the first century than our use today. It meant to fit two or more things together to make them useful. It's a practical word. It was used by builders in Ezra's day; and, a word for fishermen in the Gospels. He prays God will work in them through Christ for their usefulness.

From Genesis to Revelation, from the first Adam to to the Last Adam, the Bible is a book of blood. The faith it declares is a faith of blood. God declared the life of the flesh is in the blood (Lev 17:11). Without the blood of a sinless sacrifice there could be no satisfaction of justice or establishment of righteousness. God said with out blood is no remission. This message explores the link between Jesus' blood and God's everlasting covenant.

The Everlasting Covenant

The everlasting covenant resulted from an agreement between the three persons of the Godhead, not between God and man. The divine persons counselled to fix the terms, limitations and blessings of the covenant. Isaiah called it "the counsels of old".. Paul spoke of the "counsel of his (God's) own will". God consulted with no angel or man to set forth His covenant. The everlasting covenant became effectual by and from Jesus' shed blood.

Giving Thanks to His Name

This world is not our home. God's elect look to and live for the world to come. They remain like those of old - Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Jacob, Joseph and Moses - pilgrims and strangers in this age. The Hebrews thought they had an unconquerable city, it will turn out they didn't. The apostle declared in the most open way, we have no continuing city. How should believers live in this age? By simply thanking God for HIs love and redemption.

Go Forth Unto Him

The text gives three types. As the priests of the Old Covenant were given no privilege to eat the meat of sacrifices, believers in Christ are given no privilege to mix works and grace. As the Passover sacrifices occurred outside the Tabernacle, Jesus was crucified outside of Jerusalem. As Jesus suffered outside the city, God's elect must come to Him outside any doctrinal system that compromises grace conditioned exclusively on Christ.

My Joy In Them

Joy supersedes happiness. Joy is inner gladness and deep-seated pleasure. It is not of the flesh or circumstances; it is spiritual. The apostle wrote of Jesus: for the joy...he endured the cross(Hebrews 12:2). This message presents ten truths about joy then turns to the text. The believer's joy is powerfully secure, of eternal source, is freely shared and is abundantly sufficient. Jesus Christ and His Gospel of free grace gives great joy.

We Have an Alter

This verse declares only one altar exists in all the universe. Not another can be found in God's heaven or His earth. The altar of the Tabernacle, where the multitudes of animals were sacrificed, was but a passing figure. The Lord Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of that figure and He is the everlasting altar for God's elect people. He is the altar where the saving, justifying, sin-cleansing sacrifice was made. He is the priest, sacrifice and altar.

The congregation has been given one of the great promises in the Bible. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today and forever. The man in the pulpit and the people in the pew will change but not the Lord. In light of that truth, the apostle issued a warning: Be not carried about. He pictured doctrines diverse from and strange to the Gospel blowing those not established as a small vessel in a hurricane. He urged: be established with grace.

Leadership is vital in every phase of life. It's essential for a nation, a business, a home and a church. The apostle referred "to them which have rule over you. He referred not to control, power or one who reigns over you. He spoke of leadership. God's pastors are to lead as a shepherd does his sheep. They are to feed them by speaking the word of God. In turn, God's sheep are to pray for, love, support and encourage them.

What do you do when times are hard? In the first century, the believers in the gospel of free grace knew many pressured days. The readers of Hebrews could return to Judaism and see most, if not all, of their stresses pass. The apostle was encouraging them to embrace not abandon Christ and His message. He named two promises from the Scriptures: God's Presence and God's Power.

Our text is a closing word about contentment. I think you will agree, contentment is an elusive state of mind and heart. Not many find it. The apostle urged them to practice a manner of life that was free of the love of money. He didn't say money for needs or even wants was evil but the love of it is destructive. For sure it robs of contentment. He urged them to look away from themselves to the Lord who promised to never leave or forsake His people.

The apostle entered his closing thoughts with an exhortation on love. He instructed: love the brethren, love hospitality, love the unlovable and love your marriage. These are not easy. Some may find one harder than the other. In fact they are impossible without God's love. Nevertheless, they are essential to church-life, home-life and society in general. Pray for this: Ro 5:5 - that the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts.

Let Us Have Grace

This paragraph is the fifth and final warning in Hebrews. The apostle warned against refusing to believe the blood of Jesus is God's exclusive condition for salvation. He warned by referring to the Old Testament Hebrews and their inability to escape God's judgment as an example. He urged his readers: "let us have grace". He didn't speak of being gracious but of holding to grace alone, conditioned on Christ alone.

The chapter begins saying, professing faith is like being in a race. In our passage, the apostle described the two teams. The goal of both teams is to be justified before God. The Law Team believes by one or more fulfilled conditions he is made just before God. The apostle said grace-believers are not on that team. They are on the Grace Team. They come by the Cross, to the living God, are assured of heaven and have an effectual mediator, Jesus Christ.

Wrapped together in these four verses are diligence and danger. The apostle urged his readers to give whole-hearted diligence to the Gospel wherein Christ fully saved His people by His own obedience and blood. He warned failure to do so is to face grave and irreversible danger. He utilized Esau from Genesis, who rejected God's birthright, then later fruitlessly sought it with tears as his example. Perverting free grace is eternally dangerous.

The backdrop remains the "weight and the sin which does so easily beset". The former can be anything from neglect to stubbornness, the latter is one thing, faltering faith. So, he issued an imperative exhortation "follow" or pursue two things: "peace with all" and "holiness" with God. Some in the assembly are wavering and being tempted to apostasy. Failure in these two areas is serious! He declared: "without which no man shall see the Lord".

Chastening is never pleasant. Discipline is disagreeable to the flesh and objected to by the mind. Whose heart finds sweetness in chastisement? Yet, it is essential to all of life. God oversees the spiritual discipline of His children. It calls to reality, confirms sonship, compels discipleship and comforts the heart. If the sanctifying righteousness of the Gospel is to be found, chastisement is necessary. Let us take courage in times of discipline.

These are weighty verses. Truth and emotion fill the thoughts. The world of athletic competition is the metaphor used to convey the point. The truth looks back to believers of the past and calls the faithful to look forward. The key is in these words: "Looking unto Jesus...Consider Him". He endured despicable torture in His soul and body to become the "finisher" of the faith. By that single accomplishment, God saved and delivered His elect.

Supposing the writer of Hebrews is Paul or one of his close associates, it's easy to grasp the comparison between the world of athletic competition and the practice of the believer (Ro 9:16, 1 Co 9:24f, Ep 6:12). As a competitor lays down all but the essential clothing and focuses on the finish line, the believer lays aside any extra "weight" and "the sin" that besets. What is that? Wavering faith. What is the answer? Look steadfastly to Jesus.

Paul arrived in Rome a prisoner of the state. Providentially, he was given great liberty to preach the Gospel of God's free grace. Many high standing Jews came to hear and reason regarding Christ. Those who believed in time were greatly persuaded to depart Christ and go back to Judaism. What Paul said was mixed with numerous warnings and in time became what we call Hebrews. Others heard but God granted no understanding.

In Hebrews 11, Abraham is the fourth example of faith. He was reared in a household of idolaters. He made his living manufacturing and selling idols. Yet, sovereign grace kept him from being lost to idolatry. At the appointed time, God intervened calling him to faith and service. We are told, "he went out, not knowing whither he went". That's faith.

Noah: A Type of Christ

A "type" is thing or person representing another thing or person. In this case, both are historical figures. Noah was a real man in his generation and Christ was true Man in His. In this message, ten truths are presented showing Noah foreshadowed the Lord Jesus Christ. One of these shows Noah had a saving work -"the saving of his house"- (Hebrews 11:7). The saving was definite, limited and completely delivering. In like manner, Christ saved His household.

Facts within and without the Scriptures declare the Worldwide Flood. it's either altogether true or altogether false. An Ark would not be necessary for a local flood. Through it all, God "remembered Noah". He never took His mind, His most tender caring thought from Noah. He and his family were safe in the Ark as God's elect are safe in Christ.

Noah heeded God's words of destruction, construction and covenant. We see this in the 6th chapter. The seventh chapter opens with a word of calling. Noah demonstrated the spiritual affects of God's effectual call of grace. God's word wasn't an invitation but a compelling command. So is God's call today.

Noah is the third example of faith in the apostle's writing. In extreme times of corruption and against impossible odds of proof, Noah built the Ark. Behind this fact are two truths. Noah was a man of God's election. Seth's appointment and faithfulness in worship, generations latter led to Noah. Noah was a man of grace. God's grace found Him and He found grace.

The apostle spoke of coming to and seeking God. Yet, the apostle Paul said, "no man understands...seeks after God" (Romans 3:11). Romans speaks of man in his natural, unregenerate state. Hebrews speaks to those who have been illuminated (10:32), who come by Christ's blood sacrifice like Abel and who are elect and walk with God like Enoch (11:4-5). This one God rewards.

After Cain killed Abel, God raised up Seth to establish His elect line. Seven generations from Adam, God raised up Enoch. He is one of only two men in the Scriptures whom God took to heaven without seeing death. He walked with God and became an illustration of Biblical faith. Jude refers to him as a prophet. In Hebrews, Enoch had the kind of faith that pleased God.

What Faith Pleases God?

God recognizes only one faith. It's God-given, revelation of the true Gospel, heart-knowledge, firm persuasion and it comes to God. Praise, prayers or preaching without biblical faith is displeasing to God. His salvation purposed not only to wash away sins but to remove the scales from our eyes of darkness. Faith is the inner-disposition to come to God without reservation.

Abel A Type of Christ

We are blessed to see many comparisons between Abel and Christ. I name three. One, Cain prefigures the Jews. He killed his brother, as Jesus was killed by His brothers in the flesh. Two, Cain refused to bring the required lamb as the Jews killed their Lamb. Abel came to worship by the blood of a true sacrifice. Three, Cain acted in disbelief. Abel believed God and foretold God's people.

Abel's Blood Yet Speaks

Following his four-fold definition of faith, the apostle began his illustrations of faith with Abel. We read the account of Cain killing his brother Abel in Genesis 4, verse 1 and following. God taught the necessity of worship by blood sacrifice and the imperative of being covered in the robe of righteousness. He and Eve passed this to their children. Cain rejected it. Abel believed and obeyed.

Creation and Salvation

Faith is the full persuasion that Christ completely saved God's elect by His obedience unto death. The apostle used faith in creation to parallel faith in Christ. Creation is the first thing in the Bible that requires faith. Christ is the preeminent One in the Bible that requires faith. By faith we "understand" or perceive both creation and salvation. Creation is real. Salvation is real. By faith, we rest in both.

A Remarkable Report

The definition isn't completed in these two short verses. However, they are powerful and revealing statements. He spoke of God-given, biblical faith. Faith is: Assurance: as the title-deed to a property Evidence: as a conviction in a courtroom Witness: as a testimony before others

What is Your Hope?

Substance and hope unite, enabling faith to see the future is fully guaranteed. Old Testament saints waited and hoped for the coming of Christ. New Testament saints await the return of Christ, resurrection from the grave, a new body, the eternal state, the New Heaven and Earth and the perpetual presence of Christ. By God-given faith, we persevere in Christ, our Blessed Hope.
