The Hermeneutics of Christ

Systematic Theology - Lesson 140 - Hermeneutics: The Hermeneutics of Christ - John 1:1, 14. As we have studied about how to study the Scriptures, we are concerned with understanding the Bible as the Word of God. "The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience." Therefore, any of the Christian knowledge we possess must be arrived at by the application of the principles of Scriptural interpretation. The Person and Work of Jesus Christ is set forth in the Word of God, showing us that HE is the Word of God! He is the final interpretation of the Old Testament Scriptures as presented in the New.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 134 - Hermeneutics: The Implications of Scripture - 1 Cor. 13:12. "The Bible as the Word of God contains a fulness and wealth of thought that is unfathomable. This is evident not only from its types and symbols and prophesies, but also from what it contains implicitly rather than by express assertion." (Berkhof). Looking at historical and didactic parallels and utilizing the analogy of faith we can come to understand, with the Spirit's help, both the clear and also implied meaning found in the text of Scripture.

Mystical Sense of Scripture

Systematic Theology - Lesson 133 - Hermeneutics: The Mystical Sense of Scripture. From Principles of Biblical Interpretation (Louis Berkhof), pgs. 140-160. The mystical sense of Scripture, or allegorical sense, examines the Scripture to see how people, events, and literal things point to Christ. This means that there may be several levels of understanding needed as we see a literal event that actually happened and yet serves to demonstrate a truth about Christ. Its character can best be brought out in brief discussions of 1) the symbolical and typical interpretations of Scripture, 2) the interpretation of prophecy, and 3) the interpretation of the Psalms.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 132 - Hermeneutics: The Bible as Unity - 2 Tim. 3:16-17. "Many writers on Hermeneutics are of the opinion that the Grammatical-Historical Interpretation does not meet all the requirements for the proper interpretation of the Bible. They refuse to place the Bible on the same level as other books. Our hermeneutic then must do justice to the special theological element of the Bible." - Berkhof

Systematic Theology - Lesson 131 - Hermeneutics: The Culture and Customs of the Bible - Part 2. 1 Corinthians 11:2-16. Part of understanding the Scripture is studying the cultural conditions of the writers of the Bible. It is also important to understand the cultural conditioning we have as we read the Scriptures. Perhaps the most challenging aspect regarding culture is understanding the difference between a Biblical principle and a local custom. A principle is binding, a custom is an outworking of the principle in a specific locale and may not be universal.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 129 - Hermeneutics: Parables, Proverbs, and Prophecy - Mark 4:10-12; Prov. 26:4-5. The Pharisees were quite specific about keeping the letter of the law and also quite prolific at violating the spirit of the law. To better understand the spirit (intention) of the law, we need to understand the differences between parables, proverbs, and prophecy. Parables are stories based on life situations that help us handle abstract concepts. Proverbs are "catchy little couplets" designed to express practical truisms. And predictive and apocalyptic prophecy have foretold and foretell future events and are usually heavily symbolic.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 127 - Hermeneutics: The Style of Scripture. When we address the style of Scripture, we will be approaching this exegetically rather than from a literary point of view. We want to draw out from meaning of the Scripture from the Scripture and let the Word of God tell us about itself through the use of languages (Hebrew and Greek).

The Unity of the Sense of Scripture

Systematic Theology - Lesson 126 - The Unity of the Sense of Scripture. "The various books of the Bible constitute an organic unity." (Berkhof). The unity of Scripture is not merely a mechanical one, consisting of different parts that were prepared with a view to their mutual correlation, like the parts of a watch, that were finally collected in one volume. The Bible is not to be compared to a building, constructed according to the plans and specifications of an architect, but instead can be compared to a tree (organic), the product of progressive growth. The Bible was not made, but grew, and the composition of several books marks the stages of its development. It is the product of a single Mind, the embodiment of a single fruitful principle, branching out in various directions as it grew.

Literal Interpretation & Genre

Systematic Theology - Lesson 125 - Literal Interpretation and Genre Awareness - Nehemiah 8:8. The Three Primary Principles of Interpretation are: 1. The analogy of faith that keeps the whole Bible in view lest we suffer the effects of exaggerating one part of Scripture to the exclusion of others; 2. The literal sense offers a restraint from letting our imaginations run away with fanciful interpretations by inviting us to closely examine the literary forms of Scripture; and 3. The grammatical-historical method focuses our attention on the original meaning of the text lest we read into Scripture our own ideas. The Grammatical-historical method is a necessary foundation for understanding the Redemptive-historical method, which takes the interpretation one step further in order to find that the Scripture reveals to us Jesus Christ! He is in every single text. (More on this later).

Systematic Theology - Lesson 124 - Hermeneutics: Personal Bible Study and Private Interpretation. The Bible, as revelation, is God's self-disclosure of Himself to us. To rightly interpret revelation we do the work of exegesis objectively while relying on the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit. Subjectivism and pragmatism lead to eisegesis wherein we read into the text a meaning instead of pulling the meaning out from the text. A major victory for Bible study and understanding was won during the time of the Reformation with the introduction of Scripture in the common languages of people, allowing private interpretation as opposed to the Roman Catholic Church declaring what the text meant. Today we can study the Scriptures for ourselves!

Systematic Theology - Lesson 123 - Hermeneutics: Biblical Interpretation - Introduction to Hermeneutics - 2 Tim. 2:15; 3:16-17. Hermeneutics refers to the science that teaches us the principles, laws, and methods of interpretation. Interpretation is defined as "the act of explaining the meaning of something." In this introduction we examine why hermeneutics is necessary, why it is important, and why we should work diligently to study the Bible.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 122 - The Doctrine of the Church: Elements of Worship - Our Liturgy - Acts 2:42; Eph. 5:19. In our church then, we have gone to the Scriptures to establish our order of worship. What do we do? How do we do it? What is the content of our services as we gather to glorify God through corporate worship? Here are our answers from the Word of God for these questions: Elements of Worship 1. Preaching (Apostles Doctrine, includes teaching/reading the Word) 2. Fellowship (friendship, discipleship, using our gifts to serve one another) 3. Prayer (and fasting on occasions) 4. Ordinances (Lord's Supper and Baptism) 5. Praise (singing Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs) 6. Thanksgiving (including Giving of Tithes and Offerings)

The purpose(s) of the church can be understood as the immediate, intermediate, and ultimate purposes that follow: 1) The immediate purpose of the church is to evangelize the lost, 2) The intermediate purpose of the church is to teach and rouse one another to love and obey God, and 3) The ultimate purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. We also answer the question, "When should I leave a church?"

Systematic Theology - Lesson 118 - The Doctrine of the Church: Marks of a Healthy Church - Part 9 - In Lesson 102 we covered the qualifications for elders in the church. Today we will review the role and duties of pastors as defined by Scripture. Another term for these leaders is "elder." Those who are called in the Bible elders, bishops, or overseers are those men who are called and qualified to serve as loving shepherds in His church. Christ is Lord of the church and He rules with authority through godly elders (1 Timothy 3:1-7; 5:17; 1 Thess. 5:12; Hebrews 13:7; Acts 20:17, 28; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-2). These pastor-teachers in the church shepherd the flock of God by Feeding, Leading, and Protecting the congregation.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 117 - The Doctrine of the Church: Marks of a Healthy Church - Part 8 - Eph. 4:11-12; Acts 14:23. Mark 7 - Church government and leadership as instituted by the Apostles is established. The Lord Jesus is the Church's Supreme Authority ruling by His Word illuminated and taught by His Spirit through those He ordains to speak on His behalf. Ultimately then we see that all authority in the church flows from the Headship of Christ, mediated through the right teaching and preaching of His Word to His people by those called and chosen by Him to serve the church as His ministers.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 116 - The Doctrine of the Church: Marks of a Healthy Church - Part 7 - Discipline of the membership is Biblically administered – 1 Cor.5:10-13; Mat.18:15-17. A healthy church is always striving to be a pure church. Does that mean that a healthy church will be without sin or impurity? No. But it does mean that a healthy church is faithful to practice discipline and thus protect the membership from the influence of sin and the infiltration of false doctrine. It is the responsibility of the church leaders to protect the flock just as it is the charge of the members to watch over one another. The proper form for this discipline, that begins with self-discipline, is laid out for us in the Scriptures we will examine in this lesson.

The Fifth Mark of a Healthy Church: The Ordinances of Baptism and Communion are Administered. A healthy, properly functioning church will observe often the ordinances that Christ initiated and left as a sign of His death and resurrection. It is absolutely necessary that a church observe faithful and rightly these two ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper (Communion). We consider who should participate, proper mode, and the proper elements related to the practices within Reformed churches.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 114 - The Doctrine of the Church: Marks of a Healthy Church - Part 5 - 2 Timothy 4:2; 1 Corinthians 1:21. In these times when "easy-believism" and the prosperity gospel dominate most of the preaching people are exposed to, it is very important to understand that for a church to be a healthy church the Word of God must be faithfully and consistently preached, taught, and heard. Preaching includes speaking (proclamation, declaration) the Word of God as His herald and also refers to the content of the message preached.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 113 - The Doctrine of the Church: Marks of a Healthy Church - Part 4 - 1 Pet.1:22, John 13:35. The Third Mark of a Healthy Church: Love for Christ and His Church are Demonstrated. This third mark is often misunderstood. Many people in churches today are more than willing to say that they love Christ and that they love one another. However, when the Bible talks about love it is often a very different quality than what we think of when we talk about love. Love is not an emotion, it is a decision. And love is not unconditional, it is conditioned by the very nature and attributes of God, who Himself is love. How do we best express that love for one another in the church?

When the church in the Book of Acts identified itself by faith and practice as a sound church, they were approved by God and used by Him to expand the work of the gospel. One of the signature marks seen in the Book of Acts was the mark of continual prayer. The church in Jerusalem continued steadfastly in prayer. Prayer itself is communion and an act of worship. It is a dialogue between God and us. Prayer must be central in the church because it must be central in the life of every believer. How do we expect to have a relationship with One with whom we never talk?

Systematic Theology - Lesson 111 - The Doctrine of the Church: Marks of a Healthy Church - Part 2 - John 4:24. The first mark of a healthy church that we will consider is the character of that church's worship. Worship, or the telling forth of God's worthiness, has to have a priority in our church services. We are not to meet together for what we can get out of the praise or the preaching – we are to meet together so that we might worship God through the praise and preaching. We are to focus on HIM. The qualifications given by Jesus Himself in the New Testament for worship are that our worship is to be offered in "spirit and truth." In this lesson we examine worship that DISPLEASES God so that we may better understand then what it means to worship Him in Spirit and Truth.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 110 - The Doctrine of the Church: Marks of a Healthy Church - Part 1. Matt. 16:18. This introduction to 7 marks of a healthy church begins with an understanding of three things that are necessary in the life of the church to distinguish it as a true church of Jesus Christ. 1. Preaching of the Word (Sound Doctrine). 2. Administration of the Ordinances (Sound Practice). 3. Discipline of the Members (Sound Relationships).

Systematic Theology - Lesson 109 - The Doctrine of the Church: Spiritual Gifts - Cessationism - Ephesians 4:11; 2 Peter 1:16-21. The miraculous gifts served the purposes of authenticating the message of the Apostles and revealing truth to the church before the completion of the New Testament. Cessationism is the view that the sign gifts (performing miracles, speaking in tongues, etc.) and the revelatory gifts passed away when the foundation stage of the church ended. The foundation of the church consists of the Apostles and Prophets with Christ being the Cornerstone. With the completion of the canon, the foundation is laid. There is no need to add to the foundation and no other foundation can be laid (1 Cor. 3:11), so there is not a need for either authentication of ministry (outside of the self-authentication of Scripture) or of new revelation, since no one is to add to or detract from the Word received (Rev. 22:18-19).

Systematic Theology - Lesson 108 - The Doctrine of the Church: Spiritual Gifts - The Miraculous Gifts. An examination of the purpose and use of the spiritual gifts including: working miracles, healing, prophecy, words of wisdom and knowledge, discerning spirits, speaking in tongues, and the interpretation of tongues. At critical times throughout redemption history, God authenticated His messengers by empowering them to perform miracles and signs. Are those signs for today? Are these gifts being used according to the Biblical standards given in 1 Corinthians 12-14?

Systematic Theology - Lesson 107 - The Doctrine of the Church: Spiritual Gifts - The Ministering Gifts - Romans 12:6-8; 1 Peter 4:10-11. The Holy Spirit endows believers with gifts that by their nature and use edify the church body. These ministering gifts are categorized as speaking and serving gifts. Speaking gifts proclaim the truth of Scripture through preaching, teaching, and encouraging (exhorting). Serving gifts include helping (serving, ministering), giving, leading (administration, organization), and showing mercy.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 106 - The Doctrine of the Church: Intro to Spiritual Gifts - Rom. 12:5-8; 1 Cor. 12:4-31; 1 Peter 4:10-11. Spiritual gifts, or charismata (gifts of grace) play a vital role in the life of the church as each member uses the gifts, they have been given to do their part in edifying the whole body. The gifts are also called pneumatikos (pertaining to the Spirit) in 1 Cor. 12:1, literally meaning spirituals or spiritualities. These then are things relating to the Holy Spirit, bestowed by Him and to be used under His control for the glory of Christ. In these lessons we will be examining the miraculous gifts and the ministering gifts (speaking gifts and the serving gifts) and the best ways to discover and best utilize your gifts in the church.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 105 - The Doctrine of the Church: Church Discipline - Matthew 18:15-20; 1 Timothy 6:3-5. The practice of church discipline ought to be motivated by a positive, loving desire both to preserve the purity of the church and to restore sinning brothers and sisters to fellowship. True unity can only be found in unity around truth as revealed in the Word of God. True unity then must be grounded in sound doctrine. At the local church level this commitment to purity and unity is primarily evidenced through the faithful preaching of the Word of God, where sin is address and confronted, and through the practice of church discipline.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 104 - The Doctrine of the Church: Membership - 1 Cor. 12:13; Acts 2:42. When an individual is saved, he becomes a member of the body of Christ. Because he is united with Christ and the other members of the body in this way, he is therefore qualified to become a member of a local expression of that body – a member of a local church. To become a member of a local church is to formally commit oneself to an identifiable body of believers who have joined together for a specific, divinely ordained purpose. The Biblical foundation for church membership, while not contained in a specific command, does permeate the New Testament. This basis can be seen in 1) the example of the early church, 2) the existence of church government, 3) the exercise of church discipline, and 4) the exhortation to mutual edification.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 103 - The Doctrine of the Church: Qualifications for Deacons - 1 Timothy 3:8-13. In defining the role of deacons, the New Testament puts primary weight on a person's moral character, giving us more details on the spiritual qualifications than it does about the specific nature of their duties to the church body. The Greek words diakonos (servant), diakonia (service), and diakoneo (to serve) are all used to describe the ministry of a deacon. Initially the term was used to describe those serving food and waiting tables (Luke 4:39; 10:40; 17:8; 22:27; John 2:5, 9; 12:2; Acts 6:2). In later usage in the New Testament church it became a group of terms used to define those who served in a capacity to meet the needs of other people within the church. What are the qualifications for those who would be appointed to serve the church?

By God's design, churches depend upon faithful leadership in order to be strong, healthy, productive, and fruitful. Scripture teaches that God has given elders to each local congregation in order to oversee and lead His people. Elders who are tasked with leading, feeding, and protecting the flock will one day give an account before the Lord for the souls under their spiritual care. This overview includes the list of qualifications given and expectations for those who would be shepherds caring for the flock of God in the church.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 101 - The Doctrine of the Church: Church Government - Eph. 1:22; 4:11. Jesus, as Head of the Church, is not only her supreme authority but is also the source of her salvation. He is the "author and finisher" or "founder and perfecter" of our faith (Heb. 12:2), having purchased through His death "a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works" (Titus 2:14). Christ is the cornerstone on which the church is founded (1 Peter 2:4-8), established by Him (Matt. 16:18) and built upon the apostolic witness to the truth about Him (Eph. 2:20). The absolute rule of Christ as Head of the Church is administered through godly leaders whom He has given as gifts to the church to lead His people (Eph. 4;11; 1 Thess. 5:12-13; Heb. 13:7, 17).

Systematic Theology - Lesson 100 - The Doctrine of the Church - Means of Grace - Part 2 - 2 Cor. 3:17-18; 1 Peter 2:1-3. God accomplishes His stated (decreed) purposes by the use of means. God uses various means to bring blessing, strengthen faith, and cultivate spiritual growth in the lives of His people. Historically, these means have been called "the means of grace" and are the instruments through which God's Spirit graciously grows believers in Christlikeness. The means of grace are any activities within the fellowship of the church that God uses to give more grace to believers. In this lesson we learn about the role of baptism, Communion, prayer, worship, fellowship, and church discipline as they are also a means of grace.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 98 - The Doctrine of the Church: Unity and Purity - John 13:34-35; Eph. 4:3. The emphasis on fellowship within the local church underscores the need for unity built on love for Christ and for one another. The church body is to have unity of mind (1Peter3:8) as they eagerly seek to continue "endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Eph. 4:3). At the same time, the church is told to guard the truth (1 Tim. 6:20; 2 Tim.1:14), to contend earnestly for the purity of the faith (Jude 3), and to watch their life and doctrine closely (1 Tim. 4:16).

Systematic Theology - Lesson 97 - The Doctrine of the Church: Church Life - Acts 2:41-47. We see the New Testament Church as they are Devoted to Christ, Devoted to Scripture, Devoted to One Another, Devoted to the Lord's Table, and Devoted to Prayer. The results of this single minded devotion supernatural joy, sacrificial giving, and expanded witness to the watching world. As believers devote themselves to the right priorities, the Spirit will produce Christlike character within them (Rom. 5:4; 2 Cor. 3:18). That in turn will provide a compelling testimony to the world of the transforming power of the gospel – a witness that God will use to reach unbelievers with the truth of salvation. A healthy church in any age will be characterized by the same spiritual pursuits.

The Church is formed to advance the Kingdom of God in obedience to the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ as found in the Holy Scriptures by glorifying God in all we do (1 Corinthians 10:31), loving the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37), worshipping God alone (Luke 4:8; Revelation 22:9), making disciples of all people (Matthew 28:19-20), equipping believers in Jesus Christ for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Romans 8:29), and preaching and teaching the Word of God (Romans 1:16-17; Mark 16:15).

Systematic Theology - Lesson 95 - The Doctrine of the Church: Introduction - Eph. 5:25; Acts 2:42. Throughout the New Testament, the church is primarily designated by the Greek word ekklesia, a term meaning "those who are called out." Specifically, while the church is not a building, it is an assembly. The word refers to "a gathering of people meeting for matters of common interest; people congregated for a meeting." The New Testament model is for the members to be assembling together (congregating) on the first day of the week and also at other times, continuing "steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine [preaching/instruction] and fellowship [koinonia = close association, sharing, generous giving, participation with one another], in the breaking of bread [communion/food], and in prayers [refers to the activity of prayer and the place where prayers are made]." (Acts 2:42).

Systematic Theology - Lesson 94 - The Doctrine of Sin: Are There Degrees of Sin? - Rom. 3:22-23; Luke 12:48. All sins are the same in the sense that each sin and any sin renders a person guilty and worthy of God's wrath. Scripture does affirm that some sins are considered greater, or weightier than others. They may have more harmful consequences and we also see differing punishments as a result of different sins. In this lesson we also answer questions about the unpardonable sin and the sin unto death. Our conclusion is remembering the glorious solution for our sins, great and small, and that it the work of Christ as a propitiation for our sin!

Total Depravity

Systematic Theology - Lesson 93 - The Doctrine of Sin: Total Depravity - Romans 7:18; 8:7-8. Total depravity emphasizes the devastating impact of sin on the person and covers three related concepts: 1) the pollution and corruption of all aspects of a person, 2) the complete inability of a person to please God, and 3) universality –all are conceived and born as sinners making a person unable and even unwilling to glorify God. This does not mean that a lost person will always act as sinfully as possible, but that sin pervades every part of who and what they are. Not only do we as sinners lack any spiritual good in ourselves, but we also lack the ability to do anything that will in itself please God and the ability to come to God (or even want to come to Him) in our own strength. The total depravity of man demonstrates the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation because man can do nothing to save himself and does not even want to be saved or believe he needs to be saved if left on his own.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 92 - The Doctrine of Sin: Adam's Sin and You - Romans 5:12, 18-19. Original sin refers to the first sin committed by Adam, but original sin also encompasses the sinful state and condition of all people because of their relationship to Adam, which is the reason people are depraved and tainted with sin from conception. All members of the human race, naturally descended from Adam, were represented by Adam before God in the time of the testing in the Garden of Eden. As our representative, Adam sinned, and God then counted us guilty along with him. Adam's guilt was imputed to us. The solution to our sin is to be found, not in the first Adam, but the last Adam –1 Cor. 15:45 The first man Adam became a living being. The last Adam became a life-giving spirit as the righteousness of Christ is imputed to us by faith!

Systematic Theology - Lesson 91 - The Doctrine of Sin - The Origin and Consequences of Sin - Romans 5:12; Isaiah 14:11-12. God created Lucifer and Adam and Eve with the capacity to sin, yet He did not create them as sinners. When they sinned their sin was a willful, voluntary choice. God cannot sin, did not create sin, and does not tempt anyone to sin (Deut. 32:4; Titus 1:2; James 1:13). God is able to overcome sin and has even ordained it to most fully display His glory and God's absolute sovereignty in no way undermines man's accountability.

The Doctrine of Sin

Systematic Theology - Lesson 90 - The Doctrine of Sin - Introduction - Romans 3:23; 1 John 3:4. Sin is any lack of conformity to God's will in attitude, thought, or action, whether committed actively or passively. The center of all sin is autonomy, which is the replacing of God with self. Always closely associated with sin are its products – pride, selfishness, idolatry, and the lack of peace with God and others as a result. (MacArthur, pg. 454). The universal sinfulness of man is obvious and verifiable. Throughout history, societies have consistently acknowledged man's natural sinfulness. Since the Enlightenment, however, Western civilization has become increasingly antagonistic to the reality of sin, especially as it is defined biblically. At its core, sin is a violation of the Creator-creature relationship that we have with God. Man only exists because God made him, and man is in every sense obligated to serve his Creator. Sin causes man to assume the role of God and to assert autonomy for himself apart from the Creator. Sin then is any failure to conform to the moral law of God in act, attitude, or nature.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 89 - The Doctrine of Man - Defining Worldviews: Conclusion - Genesis 1:1; John 1:1; Hebrews 11:3. The only absolute, infallible, inerrant truth we have is the Word of God. It is our standard for belied and practice. Our worldview then must be informed by the Word of God, which means that we need to know how to study our Bibles. This lesson answers key questions about Bible study and touches on important things to know and remember regarding the work of properly interpreting the Scriptures.

Defining Worldviews: Theism

Systematic Theology - Lesson 88 - The Doctrine of Man - Defining Worldviews: Theism. Psalm 93:1; Heb. 11:3. At the time of the Protestant Reformation we find in history that this is the dominant worldview in Western thought. There was a fundamental belief in a personal Creator God who created us in His image. That alone gives us meaning and purpose in life. Faith in God and His Word informs our mind and heart about the absolute truths of this world and the world to come. Theism can be defined as a worldview that is built upon this statement –The Bible is the Word of God.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 87 - The Doctrine of Man - Defining Worldviews: Post-Modernism - Proverbs 14:12; 21:2. Once we are rid of God then the next step is to declare that there is no such thing as absolute truth. Get that? It is the foundation of Postmodernism. There is no such thing as absolute truth. Postmodernism says that there is no ultimate reality that we can know, no ultimate meaning, that we cannot know what is real and what is not, and so we must make our own meaning –but we cannot ever think that our meaning is right and others meaning is wrong. The Biblical response to this worldview is the proclamation that God's Word is absolutely true and absolute truth! That is our standard, so that is where the discussion must begin.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 85 - The Doctrine of Man - Defining Worldviews: Nihilism and Existentialism - Eccl. 2:17; 12:13-14. The Latin nihil means nothing and that defines the Nihilistic worldview – it all amounts to nothing. It makes no sense to ask why we are here or what the purpose is because the answer is nothing. Existentialism can be summarized as the worldview that says we can make meaning in this world, but that meaning doesn't come from the objective reality. There is no real meaning in the world. The only meaning that can be had in life is meaning we make for ourselves. The Biblical response is to go back to the truth that it is God who gives meaning and defines reality.

Worldviews: Deism and Naturalism

Systematic Theology - Lesson 84 - The Doctrine of Man - Defining Worldviews: Deism and Naturalism - Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 46:9. A Biblical examination of the foundational elements of the worldviews of deism and naturalism. A good summary of deism tells us that this worldview predicates a first cause, a divine maker who made this world like a clock and set it running and then let it go and left it all alone so that he might go and do whatever he was interested in doing, and he no longer interacts in this world in any way. The laws he set in motion are still in motion until they run down, and creation comes to the end as it was designed. Naturalism summarized states that we can take everything that Deism gives and remove the idea of this God who created things, this first cause, and the philosophy works just fine. Matter and energy is all that exists, the outcome of cause and effect is based purely upon chance, truth is really just scientific proof, and there are in reality no morals or values.

Defining Worldviews (Intro)

Systematic Theology - Lesson 83 - The Doctrine of Man: Defining Worldviews (Introduction). Hebrews 11:3; Proverbs 3:5-6. A worldview is "a set of fundamental assumptions about the most important issues in life" (Lig Duncan). By faith we understand the doctrine of Creation. Further, we see by faith that the Word of God informs us of the truth of creation ex nihilo (out of nothing) by God speaking what is into existence. In these next few lessons, we will take a look at what a worldview is, learn how to discern whether or not ours is Biblical, and we will investigate the prominent worldviews of mankind throughout recent history.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 82 - Society and Culture - Acts 17:26; Gal. 3:26-29. There are at present approximately 196 nations on the earth, consisting of thousands of ethnic groups. Just as God is both unity (one God) and plurality (three persons), God's image bearers evidence unity and diversity. Whatever ethnic or cultural distinctions may exist in the world between peoples, any two people anywhere in the world who know Jesus are part of the same holy nation, the Kingdom of God, where ethnicity is simply irrelevant to unity.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 81 - Death and the Intermediate State - Gen. 2:17; Rev. 20:14. The dignity of person-hood begins at conception at ends at death. Since God's image is structural to being human, there never comes a point when a person becomes anything less than a full person. Being human is not what you do or can do; it is what we are. We examine several views of what happens after death and look to the Scriptures for the truth.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 80 - The Doctrine of Man: Personhood - Job 3:3; Gen. 25:21-22. Personhood is simply the quality or condition of being an individual person, or an individual being. The question of when does personhood begin is answered differently depending upon one's worldview. Within the framework of a Biblical worldview, one becomes a person (an individual being) when they become…when they are conceived. Life begins at conception, when all 23 pairs of chromosomes are complete. Remember, this is the same time at which we become a living soul.

A Living Soul

Systematic Theology - Lesson 78 - The Doctrine of Man: A Living Soul - 1 Cor. 5:5; Zechariah 12:1. Review: Scripture uses the terms "soul" and "spirit" interchangeably. At different times we are described as being "body and soul" (Matt. 10:28) and "body and spirit" (1 Cor. 5:5). Understanding then that the immaterial part of us is referred to in Scripture as our soul or spirit, where does that immaterial part of us originate? What is the origin of the soul? Is the soul created by God at conception? Is the soul passed down from one's parents through a natural process? There are three views concerning the origin of the soul that we will examine in this lesson: preexistence, creationism, and traducianism.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 77 - The Doctrine of Man: Being Human - Body, Soul, and Spirit - Genesis 2:7. Various terms are used to refer to human persons in Scripture. Five of the more common terms include body, soul, spirit, heart, and conscience. And there are three views of the human constitution: Monism, Dichotomism, and Trichotomism. We have been created as a complex unity with a material element (physical body) and an immaterial element (soul/spirit) that survives after the physical element dies and will be reunited with it at the resurrection.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 76 - The Doctrine of Man: Created in the Image of God - Gen. 1:27. The value inherent in all human life is rooted in our creation by God, having been made in His image and likeness. Every single human being, no matter how much the image of God is marred by sin, or illness, or weakness, or age, or any other shortfall, still has the status of being in God's image and therefore must be treated with the dignity and respect that is due God's image bearer.

Systematic Theology - The Doctrine of Man - Lesson 75 - Introduction to Anthropology - Psalm 8:3-5; Hebrews 11:3. The study of humanity is called anthropology –the Greek term Anthropos means "man." Who better to teach us about mankind than the One who created us? A God-centered approach is required for a proper understanding of humanity, otherwise with a man-centered perspective we cannot come to a truthful conclusion. Man is not an accidental product of chance and time without an intentional design or purpose. Yet biblically we see that man is a direct creation of a personal God who designed man with dignity and purpose to serve God.

Systematic Theology - The Doctrine of Angels - Lesson 74 - The Worship of Angels - Luke 4:5-8; Colossians 2:18-19. We should beware of false versions of angels, or false doctrine received from angels! Even Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14; Gal. 1:8). While there might seem that there is not much demonic activity in the Old Testament, the people of Israel often sinned by serving false gods. The Scripture is clear that these false gods are really demons – fallen angels. In examining the rituals of demon worship we learn that ultimately all false religion worships Satan.

Systematic Theology - The Doctrine of Angels - Lesson 72 - The Angel of the Lord - Genesis 16:7-13; John 17:5. Scripture speaks of both the full deity and full humanity of Christ, but in examining Him we want to see what the Scriptures tell us about the Son of God from eternity past to eternity future and so must begin with His existence in eternity past. Throughout Scripture we have learned about the Being and Persons of the Trinity, each fully Being God while interacting as Three Distinct Persons. The Second Person is described as being "with God" (John 1:1), meaning He is distinct as a separate identity within the Trinity. What kind of preexistence did Christ have prior to His incarnation?

They are created spiritual beings, originally part of the holy angels. The Bible mentions demons over 100 times, mentioned as demons, or as spirits (unclean, evil, deceiving). In this lesson we examine the character, power, and condemnation of demons.

In this lesson we examine 29 names used in Scripture that help us define and understand Satan's character and we also see a clear picture of his condemnation, from the curse to the lake of fire. He is a defeated Enemy and one day soon he will be crushed beneath our feet (Romans 16:20).

Lucifer - Strategies/Defenses

Systematic Theology - The Doctrine of Angels - Lesson 69 - Lucifer (Part 2) - Satan's Strategies and the Believer's Defenses - 2 Cor. 11:3-4; James 4:7-8. Satan manipulates the thinking by playing mind games, telling lies, making false accusations, and working counterfeit signs and wonders. A corrupt mind leads to corrupt living. What is more corrupt than thinking contrary to the Word of God? Satan employs four strategies to against us to cause us to 1) Doubt God's Word, 2) Distort God's Word, 3) Deny God's Word, and 4) Disobey God's Word. How do we fight against these fiery darts?

Systematic Theology - The Doctrine of Angels - Lesson 68 - Lucifer (Part 1) - 1 Peter 5:8; Genesis 3:15. Yes, Satan exists. He was created by God with the rest of the angels. He was created holy but later fell into sin by coveting God's place and rebelling against Him. Satan "prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8). He is also involved in telling lies (John 8:44), influencing people to lie (Acts 5:3), snatches the gospel from unbelieving hearts (Matt. 13:19), holds unbelievers under his power (Eph. 2:2; 1 John 3:8-10; 5:19), traps and deceives unbelievers holding them captive to do his will (2 Tim. 2:26), tempts believers to sin (1 Cor. 7:5; Eph. 4:27), seeks to deceive believers (2 Cor. 11:3), and seeks to destroy believer's faith (Luke 22:31).

Systematic Theology - The Doctrine of Angels - Lesson 67 - The Holy Angels - Job 38:7; 1 Peter 1:12. Angels are referred to in Scripture by names, titles, and functions. Seventeen appellations relate to God's messengers. These references define who angels are and what they do. In this lesson we study the character, residence, powers, ministries, and destiny of the holy angels. The lesson is followed by a Q&A.

Intro to Doctrine of Angels

Systematic Theology - The Doctrine of Angels - Lesson 66 - Introduction to the Doctrine of Angels. The Hebrew and Greek words for angel appear 389 times in 42 books of the Bible, and while not always referring to angelic beings the term can refer to human messengers, holy angels, demons, Satan, or the Angel of the Lord. There are over 65 variations, or names used to describe angels in Scripture. Angels were created as envoys, ambassadors, and messengers. They are also identified as the "host of heaven", or the armies of heaven, and in some capacity function as warriors. So what does the Bible actually tell us about angels? And what have we been told about angels that simply cannot be proven in the Scriptures?

The Spirit of God prophesied the coming of the Messiah, brought about the virgin birth, descended upon Christ at His baptism, anointed Him to preach, empowered Him, filled Him, lead Him, rejoiced with Him, and aided Him in His earthly ministry. He also was part of raising Jesus from the dead and calls for His second coming.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 62 - The Trinity: The Holy Spirit - Inspiration and Illumination - 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 1 Peter 1:20-21. Inspiration refers only to the written Word of God, whereby the Holy Spirit protects God's revelation through human writers from error in order to provide a completely true and trustworthy writing, down to the very words used (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Peter makes it clear that the prophecy of Scripture was made not by an act of human will, but rather by men who were directed by the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:20-21 –"men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."

Systematic Theology - Lesson 61 - The Trinity: The Holy Spirit - Saving and Sanctifying - Rom. 8:10-11; Titus 3:5. As an act of grace, the Triune God purposed (determined) to save a remnant of His creation through the atoning work of God the Son. Scripture teaches, however, that the saving benefits accomplished by Christ on the cross are applied to believers through the work of the Holy Spirit. Salvation was Decreed by the Father, Accomplished by the Son, and is Applied by the Spirit.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 57 - The Trinity: Jesus the Son - Penal Substitutionary Atonement - 1 Cor. 15:1-8; Heb. 10:10-14. Christ's sacrifice is final – a single, finished work that cannot be repeated. Christ's sacrifice was efficacious – He actually saved His people when He died for them. He did not come to make salvation hypothetically possible or merely available, but to actually "save His people from their sin." He does not make men redeemable, He redeems them.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 53 - The Trinity: Jesus the Son - The Incarnation (Part 2) - Gen. 3:15; Gal. 4:4. In this study we are defending the Doctrine and necessity of the Virgin birth, including debunking myths and heresies surrounding Mary and the person and natures of the Incarnate Christ. We also examine human titles and characteristics of Christ showing how He was truly God and truly man at the same time.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 52 - The Trinity: Jesus the Son - The Incarnation (part 1) - Phil. 2:6; Col. 1:15. Jesus is the God-Man – truly and fully God as well as truly and fully human. In His incarnation He manifested outwardly His internal divine essence. We examine some of the Divine characteristics and titles of Christ as well as covering the concept of Kenosis which describes how Jesus voluntarily yielded the independent exercise of His divine attributes to the will of the Father.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 51 - The Trinity: Jesus the Son - The Pre-Incarnate Christ - Rev. 19:10; John 1:1. As the Second Person of the Godhead, the Savior's person and work constitute the central testimony of all Scripture. Scripture speaks of both the full deity and full humanity of Christ, but in examining Him we want to see what the Scriptures tell us about the Son of God from eternity past to eternity future and so must begin with His existence in eternity past. We will also see what kind of preexistence Christ had prior to His incarnation.

Trinity: Problem of Evil

Systematic Theology - Lesson 50 - The Trinity: God the Father - Theodicy (The Problem of Evil) - Romans 3:5-6; Acts 2:23; 4:27-28. One of the most persistent arguments against the existence of God (or God as the Bible defines Him) is based on the existence of physical and moral evil in the world. Does God cause the evil actions that people commit? If God is real, perfectly good, and omnipotent, then how can evil exist? The Christian response to the problem of evil is called "Theodicy", which mean "justification for God." It is a vindication of God's justice against the charge that the presence of evil in creation shows Him to be unjust, weak, or non-existent. Theodicy declares that God is all powerful and all good even though this might not seem to be the case due to the existence of evil in creation.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 49 - The Trinity: God the Father - Preservation, Concurrence, and Governance - Acts 17:28; 2 Peter 3:7. The first major aspect of God's providence is His preservation of the universe. The second major aspect of God's providence is His concurrence in all events. The third major aspect of God's providence in and over the universe is His divine governance of all things. This governance involves God's continual active rule over all things so that, through them, He will accomplish His ultimate purpose of glorifying Himself.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 48 - The Trinity: God the Father - Decree and Providence - Eph. 1:11; Isa. 46:10. God's decree is His eternal plan, whereby, according to His decretive will and for His glory, He foreordained everything that comes to pass (MacArthur, pg. 211). God is continually involved with all created things in such a way that He 1) keeps them existing and maintaining the properties with which He created them; 2) cooperates with created things in every action, directing their distinctive properties to cause them to act as they do; and 3) directs them to fulfill His purposes (Grudem, pg. 315).

Systematic Theology - Lesson 47 - The Trinity: God the Father - Works of Creation - Genesis 1:1; Psa. 33:6. In creation: God the Father spoke the creative words to bring the universe into being, but it was God the Son, the eternal Word of God, who carried out these creative decrees. The Holy Spirit was active as well in a different way, in "moving" or "hovering" over the face of the waters apparently sustaining and manifesting God's immediate presence in His creation.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 46 - The Trinity: Being and Persons. When we speak of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together we are not speaking of any greater Being than when we speak of the Father alone, or the Son alone, or the Spirit alone. The Father is all of God's Being. The Son is all of God's Being. The Spirit is all of God's Being. Personal distinctions are not just three different ways to look at God. Each Person relates to the others as an "I" (first person) and "you" (second person) and a "he" (third person). In Divine terms, God's Being is so much greater than ours that within His one undivided Being there can be an unfolding into interpersonal relationships between three distinct Persons, a one-in-three and three-in-one.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 45 - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - Col. 2:8; Acts 5:3-4. In this lesson we seek to establish the divinity of each of the Three Persons within the Trinity, demonstrating that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Spirit is God - all deserving of worship and reverence as God. We see that all Three possess Divine Perfections, have Divine Prerogatives (rights), and Perform Divine Acts. "And in this Trinity none is afore, or after another; none is greater, or less than another. But the whole three Persons are coeternal, and coequal. So that in all things, as aforesaid: the Unity in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity, is to be worshipped" (Athanasian Creed).

Systematic Theology - Lesson 42 - The Doctrine of God - God's Attributes: Blessedness, Beauty, and Glory. God's blessedness speaks of Him being perfectly delighted with Himself. Since God is absolutely perfect, sovereign, and unhindered in all His purposes and works to glorify His name, he is supremely happy, the happiest Being conceivable (MacArthur, pg. 188). God's beauty is that attribute of God whereby He is the sum of all desirable qualities (Grudem, pg. 219). God's glory refers to the consummate beauty of the totality of His perfections. It is His supreme significance and splendor (MacArthur, pg. 188). God's perfections constitute His essence, or character, which far transcends all created things in greatness. God's essence is one indivisible whole, so that each and all of His perfections actively characterize His entire Being.

Systematic Theology - Lesson 40 - God's Attributes: Will - Pt 4 - Romans 7:15-25; Matt. 16:24-25. Our will seems to be ground zero in the battle between the Spirit and the flesh. What do we really want? What should we really want? How do we reorder our desires so that they are aligned with God's will and Word? Crucify fleshly desires, desire the Lord and His Word, learn to serve others instead of self, press on, and finish what you start.

God's Attributes: Will - Pt 3

Systematic Theology - Lesson 39 - God's Attributes: Will - Pt 3 - Rom. 3:10-12; Phil. 2:12-13. Human beings are constituted as material and immaterial beings - body, soul, spirit, heart, conscience. Within our fallen human nature we find (as with any Being) that our will is free but at the same time bound. The will is limited by the nature, and natural ability. However, in discussing the "freeness" of our will we learn quickly from Scripture that there are things that fallen human beings cannot do. One of those things is an inability to believe without first having a supernatural (by grace) adjustment made to our will and desires.
