Responsibilities of Church Leaders and Members

These verses at the end of the letter to the Hebrews address some of the major responsibilities, first of all, of church leaders: they are to teach the Word, live exemplary lives with a clear conscience, and keep watch over the souls of their flock. Church members, likewise, are to imitate their leaders' Christian confession and way of life, obey them, pray for them, and take seriously their words of exhortation. All these directives are not easy but they are to be strived for.

Living as Citizens in the Unshakeable Kingdom

Because Christians are citizens in an unshakeable kingdom, we should not only be authentic worshippers of God, but we should demonstrate our love for the people in the church by showing hospitality, visiting those in prison, and holding marriage in honor. In addition, we should live lives of contentment because of God's never failing presence with us and because he is our Helper in every situation.

In this passage the weakness and incompleteness of the Old Covenant is contrasted with the full and complete salvation provided in the New Covenant - one of the chief being access into the very presence of God in the assembly of his people in the heavenly Jerusalem. Those of us who have been so graced should be grateful and faithful to attendance upon worship at our own local assemblies on earth.

Motivations for Holy Living

The love of God for the people to whom this letter is addressed is manifested in the orchestration of trials of persecution which had come their way. But instead of being discouraged, they should be encouraged, realizing that God loves them enough to discipline them. With this in mind they should continue their Christian pilgrimage and their lives should be marked by several virtues spelled out in this passage. What God has done and is doing should strengthen their resolve to be holy people.

The persecution and hardship that the Hebrew Christians had been experiencing and that was influencing them to waiver in their commitment to Christ, was really an indication of God's love for them as his sons (and daughters). It's goal is to train them in the development of righteousness as they submit to God's loving and sovereign hand in their present trials, as well as encourage them to forge ahead in their dedication and service to Jesus.

Hostility of Sinners Against Jesus

Sinners such as his own family, his hometown people, the religious leadership, and the crowds, - all these sinners were hostile to Jesus. So we, too, must persevere against sin and sinners who oppose the gospel. We should also pray for those who are enduring persecution in the name of Christ.

The Endurance of Faith

The faith that pleases God rests on the promises of God and endures in loyalty to Christ, even when the circumstances are unfavorable and harsh. This faith looks forward to Christ's return and is sustained by this hope - no matter how intense the trial. The "roll call of faith" displays examples of this kind of forward looking faith that these OT saints had. If they could endure, so can we.

The Kind of Priest We Need

Our greatest need is for a priest because we need someone to mediate between us and the holy God whom we have offended by our sins. The provision of the priesthood under the Old Covenant was a great blessing in that it made the people aware of their sins, but the blood of animals could not remove their sin. Jesus, however, by the sacrifice of his own blood, saves his people "to the uttermost" by providing absolute purification from sin along with many accompanying benefits. (This message was delivered to the Naga Fellowship of Dallas/Fort Worth at their bi-monthly meeting.)

Faith That Pleases God

Faith is an assurance, conviction, an "objective guarantee" of the fulfillment of God's promises in the Gospel. It perseveres in adversity. It is a faith that trusts God, pleases him, and is seen exercised in the life of Abel and Enoch. It is the gift of God through sovereign grace bestowed on undeserving sinners.

Particularly in view of those whose spiritual backsliding was manifested in their dropping off church attendance, the writer issues a stern warning about spiritual shipwreck. But he also reminds them of the sufferings they had joyfully endured for the sake of Christ and his people, and urges them to endure in the Christian life so they may obtain the promises.

Because of all that Jesus Christ has done in offering his body as an oblation (sacrifice) to God, we have access to God's presence and true forgiveness of our sins. Therefore, in response we have obligations to: (1) draw near to God in worship, (2) hold fast to the confession of our faith regarding Christ's person and work, and (3) gather with God's people in their worship meetings so we can love and encourage them.

It was impossible for the blood of the slain sacrificial animals to remove human sin under the Law - these were a shadow of the reality that was required by God to remove sin: the offering up of the human body of Jesus Christ. This one offering eradicated for all time the sins of God's people. No other sacrificial offering is needed.

The sacrifices of animals under the Old Covenant accorded with God's directive that "without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins." Yet this blood was only provisional until the blood of the Son of God was shed on Calvary's cross which truly and completely put away sins forever because of the infinite value of the One who was offered up: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Purification of the Conscience by Christ's Work

The writer describes the items that were in the two compartments of the tabernacle and the ministry of the high priest on the Day of Atonement. He shows that this ministry limited access to the presence of God and did not perfect the worshippers' conscience. But Christ passed through and entered the sanctuary in heaven itself, applying his blood, which had absolute power to finally purify our consciences, that is, the total inner spiritual reality of man's being.

Jesus, High Priest of the New Covenant

All of sinful mankind are in desperate need of a priest as their mediator before the holy God. Jesus as the High Priest of the New Covenant far exceeds the Aaronic priesthood because of his sinless, endless life, and his appointment to his office by the oath of God. Additionally, he ministers in the heavenly, not earthly sanctuary. The new covenant he established accomplished what the Old Covenant could not: the internalization of God's law, intimate personal relationship with God, and the forgiveness of sins.

The problem that the Jewish Christians who were the recipients of this sermon had was not lack of knowledge, but lack of listening to and obeying the voice of God. They had given in to their fears instead of being faithful to Christ. The writer calls them to move on to maturity.

Jesus was made fully human like us in every aspect of our humanity, except sin. He experienced hunger, thirst, tiredness, and temptation. Therefore he is qualified to be our great high priest and the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins.

Jesus, Greater Than Angels

As Christ is superior to all the previous prophets, so he is greater than the angels. Under the Old Covenant angels served as mediators between God and his people. But now one greater than angels has appeared, the Lord Jesus Christ, whom, in fact, angels worship, and is a Mediator of far greater worth than the angels.

The Supreme Prophet

The Old Testament prophets spoke of a time in the future, the "last days," in which the promises of God regarding the redemption of his people would be fulfilled. Specifically Moses predicted the prophet to come. In the fullness of time, the prophet arrived in the person of Jesus. We must hear him, worship him, and proclaim him for he is God come to us in human flesh. Any other human prophet is far inferior to him.

Hebrews Overview - The Superiority of Christ

This overview of the Book of Hebrews stresses the superiority of Christ over angels, over Moses, over the Aaronic priesthood, and over the Old Covenant. This latter covenant was weak and ineffective for removing human sin. Only Christ, our great High Priest, could purify us from our sins and bring us to his everlasting kingdom.
