Ruth 4:11-22 tells the story of a child in the line of Judah who was born as a redeemer setting the stage for the arrival of the ultimate redeemer, the Messiah. God works through sacrificial love and seemingly impossible circumstances to bring about redemption through a baby who is born in Bethlehem.

Ruth 3:1-4:10 tells the story of a kinsman-redeemer who redeems his beloved from a desperate situation at great cost to himself. Likewise, we, too, are helpless outsiders until Jesus, our divine Redeemer, pays the price to give us a new life in the here and now and eternal life in the age to come.

The Purpose of His Coming

It is a struggle sometimes during the season of Christmas to remind people that Christmas is not about a man in a red suit. It is about God reaching out to men through Jesus. It is even more difficult to draw attention to WHY God became man in the first place. I’ve been reminding you about the reason for the season by stating the following: if Christmas doesn’t lead you to Calvary, you’ve MISSED the point! For tonight, please allow me to underscore this reality by reading a fascinating portion of Scripture. If we look at what the Bible tells us we see that Jesus came to rescue us. However, what He came to rescue us from may surprise you.

The True Spirit of Christmas

Before we deal directly with the text, let’s not forget that the account doesn’t begin here in 1:46. Our story this morning isn’t really about Bethlehem. It ends there, but it starts about nine months earlier, when Mary realizes that she has been chosen by God to give birth to the Messiah. We pick up the story in Luke 1 when she goes to visit Elizabeth, who was herself, pregnant with John the Baptist. When Elizabeth saw Mary, she greeted her with those famous words, (read 1:42). When Mary heard those confirming words, she broke out into song. The words of her song are recorded in Luke 1:46-55. Please note that in this hymn, Mary is not the one being worshiped, Mary is the worshiper. It is a hymn of worship from Mary to God.

The Purpose of Christmas

Believe it or not, this verse talks about the PURPOSE of Christmas. In general, most people when they think of this time of year think only of the beauty of it (lovely trees with bright lights and decorations, colorful ornaments, beautiful candles, wreaths, snow scenes, warm fire places, beautifully wrapped presents, beautiful Christmas cards, everything is bright and light and cheery and happy). But there's also another side. There's a DARK side…an ugly side. Lurking behind every beautiful scene on every Christmas card and every lovely sentiment of Christmas there’s a vile, wretched reality that is crucial to a proper understanding of Christmas. And that reality is that sinners needed a Savior.

The Power of Christmas

Christmas is not merely the birth of a baby. Christmas is the celebration of God’s entry into our world. Our culture shifts the focus of Christmas to the infancy of Jesus, whereas the true focus of Christmas is actually on the deity of Jesus. In this study, we will focus our attention on The Power of Christmas as seen in the name & titles found in our text. Please note that the Christmas Child is called Jesus (v. 21); in verse 23, He is called Immanuel; in 2:2, He is called King; and in 2:4, He is called Christ. All of those titles for that one little child: Jesus, Immanuel, King, and Christ. These titles will tell us how the child of Christmas has the power to restore the fainting heart.
