The Lord has given us a weekly day to be renewed in Him. We are to remember what the day is for and devote the day entirely to that purpose.

Lord's Day Keeping Requires Works of Necessity and Mercy

Introduction: Jesus’ Sabbath routine, Luke 4:16. How does it translate to our Sabbath routines? 1. “Deeds of necessity.” Taking care of basic needs is necessary, in order to be with Jesus, vv1-8 a. It is a hard view of God to think that all He cares for is our sacrifice. Even the Pharisees’ view of this law was corrupted by their hardness (cf. Deu 23:25) b. Works necessary for us to worship Jesus. Jesus is greater than David. Being with Him ought to be a place of privilege, not deprivation. God doesn’t command us to be miserable, but He does command us to be merciful. c. Works necessary for others to worship Jesus. Jesus is greater than the Temple. Whatever is necessary to facilitate His worship is Sabbath keeping, not breaking. 2. “Deeds of mercy.” Noticing and attending to the suffering of others is necessary, in order to be with Jesus, vv9-14 a. He desires mercy! Like Jonah… they just knew that He would be merciful! b. We don’t “break” the Sabbath by deeds of mercy; we keep it by deeds of mercy! We enable ourselves to worship Him by maintaining our hearts in sympathy with His. c. Hardness toward others corresponds with hardness toward Him, v14. You cannot delight in Him and despise His image. 3. So, what do we do? a. We prepare ourselves for worship b. We go to worship. Don’t just be there. Be THERE. c. We attend to Jesus, in delight and submission, by caring about what He cares about: God’s glory, Our souls, Others Conclusion: Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath! Psalm 73:16-28 and Isaiah 58:13-14 and Gen 2:2-3 and Heb 4:1-10 are all about Him!

Keep Holy the Lord's Day

Introduction: How we got here… (a) Heb 4 and the “rest” of God. (b) Isa 58:1-12 and the generously law-giving God who makes a generous people. Exodus 20:8-11 and tying the two together. 1. A surprising if-then, v13a a. Not a display of ourselves, but being disciplined by the habit b. While our hearts catch up, we must trust His Word… “call the Sabbath a delight” c. “Holy” means set apart unto God. God’s and not ours. d. But set apart to God for our good; “the Sabbath was made for man” 2. In a manner that rubs us the wrong way, v13b a. It is offensive to us to hear “not your own… nor your own… nor your own” b. Not your own ways. As soon as we start justifying what we want, we’re already breaking the commandment c. Nor your own pleasure. The most important things to set aside for worship on this day are the very things that compete hardest with the Lord to be our refreshment and delight. Focusing upon natural physical or mental benefits of change of pace is to lose the Sabbath principle entirely. d. Nor your own words. Worship and conversations that produce 1Cor 14:22-25 situations. 3. To give us what cannot be had any other way, v14 a. Hearts that delight properly b. Heights—realize and savor that we are royalty in Him c. Heritage: the Lord Himself. We mentioned Psalm 16 last week; now consider how this works in… Conclusion: Psalm 73:16-28 and what we were made for

The Generous Lord of the Sabbath

Introduction: The Lord’s rest is better than the Promised Land, better even than Eden. And He has given us a Day that makes this very point. 1. Fervent Religion a. Can look very good, v2 b. But may still need a strong wake-up call, v1 c. If it has a wicked view of God, v3-6 d. And produces a reflection in the heart and life, v3b, 7, v9b 2. Fruitful Repentance a. A right view of God, v6 b. Produces a reflection in the heart and life, v7, v10 c. And spiritual life and strength, v8 d. In a close relationship with the Lord, v9a, 11 e. That makes a multigenerational difference, v12 Conclusion: But while our hearts catch up, we must trust His Word, v13a

Christ Uses Lord's Days to Bring Us into His Rest

Introduction: What was God doing in the wilderness? Saving them! What is God doing here this morning? Saving us! Bringing us into His rest! 1. The way to enter: faith. a. Every age of the church has heard the gospel. It’s always been all about entering God’s rest, God’s joy, God’s blessedness through Christ. b. Recipe #1: hearing the gospel by itself. Result: failing to enter rest. c. Recipe #2: hearing the gospel with faith. Result: entering His rest. 2. What rest? God’s Next-world Life of Blessedness a. What Adam looked forward to but didn’t achieve. v4-5 teach us that Ps 95:11 explains Gen 2:2. But we get more than Adam lost. We come from far lower (sin and misery) than he began to far higher than he would have achieved (union with Christ). b. What Moses’ generation lost by their rebellion (not the land). v6 teaches us that God’s promise is not empty, so there are at least “some” who must enter. c. Not Joshua’s rest. v8 makes it plain that this rest is literally out of this world. Joshua gave them earthly property, power, prosperity. d. and What was still in the future at the time of David 3. Enjoyed in prospect via weekly Sabbaths (v9) until we leave this life (v10). This is the “Today” of Psalm 95—a special day, for a special event, in which the Holy Spirit does a special work Conclusion: By faith, let us cling to Christ who has secured for us that eternal blessedness with God. By faith, let us cling to Christ as He addresses us in His Word, holding before us the promise of that eternal happiness with God. By faith, let us cling to Christ as He powerfully works upon us by His Word, preparing us for that eternal happiness with God!
