Thankful for God's Keeping You

Here in this Psalm, in verse 4, the Lord God is described as the Keeper of Israel. We know that these verses, which speak of His keeping, relate to us Gentiles just as much as the Jews, because Jesus Christ has broken down the barrier between Jew and Gentile and has made us into one spiritual people. Since this is the case, we can apply these verses to ourselves, because we know that through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are a part of God's spiritual Israel. The Lord's keeping of His people is described for us here, in three wonderful ways. 1st – The Lord God is always there to keep your foot from slipping. (verse 3) 2nd – The Lord God is continually protecting you through the Mediation of His Son. (verses 4-7) And 3rd – The Lord God is continually guarding your going out and your coming in. (verse 8) As I relate these to you, I would have you to remember that the Lord Jesus died in order that these things could become a reality in your everyday experience.

Thankful for the Lowest Place

The truth that Jesus is teaching in this passage is that a true disciple of His; one who knows Him and who would serve Him, is the person who is humble. This is something which Christ would have each of us to learn. I want to tie this truth in with the theme of Thanksgiving Day, in this way. I believe that if you are thankful, if you are being taught by the grace of God, you will become a humble person. But I believe that in your becoming humble, you will not turn in on yourself and become an island to yourself. Rather, you will look outside of yourself to see how you might serve our Lord. So let us ask ourselves some questions in relation to this parable, to determine whether we are making progress in becoming the humble, and holy, and loving people that Jesus would have us to be. 1st – Are you thankful to have received the invitation to this wedding feast that Jesus is talking about? (verses 7-9) 2nd – Are you willing to show forth your thankfulness in taking the lowest position at the table? (verses 10 & 11) And 3rd – Will you continue to have a thankful spirit, looking to do the Lord's bidding, as you wait to go up higher at the table to which you have been called? (verses 12-14)

Thank Christ Who Enabled You

I want to speak to you this afternoon about the great truth that it is the Lord Jesus Christ who gives his saints enabling grace to be faithful in their work of the ministry that He has called them to. In the case of both pastors and people this is true. In looking at Paul's words here, we will see what Christ Jesus did for him to enable him to be a faithful minister. And through these words we will also see what Christ will do for each of us to enable us to be faithful to serve Him on the basis of His mighty grace working in our hearts and our lives. Christ gave enabling grace to the Apostle Paul in the following 3 ways:

The Beauty of Thanksgiving

According to these verses which I just read to you, there is a 3-fold beauty to Christian Thanksgiving which I will open up for you at this time. 1st of all – To obey the command to give God thanks is a beautiful thing. 2nd – Giving Thanks by talking of all His Wondrous Works is a beautiful thing. And 3rd – To Give Thanks by glorying in His holy name is a beautiful thing. Let us think together now of this 3-fold beauty, and of how we might please our God by giving Him thanks.

Giving Thanks is Giving Glory

This afternoon, I would like to bring to your attention the fact that giving thanks to God is giving glory to Him. This is what Jesus says here in verse 18. "Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?" And the text itself, in describing what happened here, says in verse 15 – And one of the Samaritans, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at Jesus' feet, giving Him thanks. So, to give glory to God is to give Him thanks, and to praise Him. It is telling Him how great He is; telling Him how good He is. It is telling Him that He alone does wondrous and excellent things. Giving Him glory, expressing yourself to Him in this way, telling Him how much you appreciate Him for who He is and for what He has done for you, this glorifies Him.

Seeking the Continuing City

It says here that since we have no continuing city; that since we seek the city that is to come, therefore we ought to offer the sacrifice of praise, regularly, during the time of our earthly sojourn here upon the earth. The 1st thing that the apostle would have us to remember to do is that while we are seeking the city which is to come, we ought to continually praise God for what is coming. And 2nd is, that in offering the sacrifice of praise we are to continually give thanks to His holy name, remembering how great and glorious a God He is. It is fitting for us to think about these things in light of the Thanksgiving season that we are in, and fitting that we remember to praise Him and thank Him at all times.

Oh That Men would Give Thanks

God knows that we as men need to be encouraged to be thankful, so that many of His richest blessings will come to us when we are thankful people. This is why the last verse of this Psalm says – "Whoever is wise will observe these things, and they will understand the lovingkindness of the Lord." In other words, there are definite reasons why you should give thanks to God. 1st of all – You should give thanks if you are one of the Lord's redeemed. (verses 1-3a) 2nd – You should give thanks because He delivers you from your distresses. (verses 4-6) 3rd – You should give thanks because He leads you forth by the right way. (verse 7) And 4th – You should give thanks that He satisfies your longing soul, and fills your hungry soul with goodness. (verses 8 and 9) So let's think together about these truths so that we might learn to engage in the holy discipline of giving thanks for all that the Lord does for us.

Giving Thanks Always for all Things

It is with a thankful heart that we remember the Puritan Pilgrims who first came over from Delph Haven in Holland in the year 1620. They had fled persecution from their native England not too long before and now they were launching out to search for a place where they could worship God with freedom of conscience. I think that it is peculiarly fitting that we pause this morning and remember that what we have come to know as Thanksgiving began with Christian people experiencing trials and testings to their faith. And yet they were a thankful people. This is the kind of people that you and I who are Christians hope to be, in our trials and difficulties on our journey through this life to heaven. We are like Pilgrim in Pilgrim's Progress; we have set out on a journey from this life to the next, and we would be a thankful people, not only on this upcoming day of Thanksgiving, but as our text says, "giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." So what I would like to do this morning is to first of all to share with you the beauty of Christian thanksgiving. Then secondly I would like to tell you of the duration of Christian thanksgiving. And then finally I would like to set before you the all-inclusive nature of Christian thanksgiving.

Giving Thanks to God (Part 2)

You need to know, that your faith and having everything necessary to sustain your heart, does not rest upon what other people around you are doing. It does not rest upon whether they are treating you right or treating you wrong. You have a strength of grace, residing in your heart, that does not come from what other people do, or what other people say. Yours is the strength and encouragement of Christ’s presence with you. Your faith and the good things that Christ can do for you are enough to keep you spiritually alive. His grace is enough to keep you moving forward in obedience, if you are thankful to God. But even though this is true, this does not mean that you do not need to keep taking precautions to deal with the discouragements that might come to you when others around you are disappointing your hopes. Your thankfulness must be on-going. And this is what we want to look at this afternoon. So let us continue on, now, to look at the other two ways that God will know if we are truly thankful people.

Giving Thanks to God (Part 1)

The question that I will ask this morning is this: How can we show God that we are truly thankful for all that He has given us? How can we be thankful as the text says? Beginning at verse 12, I think that we can find 4 ways that God will know that we are truly thankful for all that He has given us. We will look at two of them this morning and two this afternoon. Let me give you the overview now. 1st – You will clothe yourself with the graces of the Spirit. 2nd – You will let the peace of God rule in your heart. 3rd – You will let the Word of God dwell richly in your heart. And 4th – When you learn to give thanks in everything. Let’s contemplate these first two points for a few moments together. And then this afternoon we will look at the other two.

This morning I am going to ask you 4 questions in relation to this incident, and the parable that Jesus gives here, so that you might determine whether you are making progress in becoming the humble, and holy, and loving person that God would have you to be? 1st – Are you thankful that the Lord Jesus has the power to heal you of all of your diseases? (verses 1-6) 2nd – Are you thankful to have received the invitation to this wedding feast that Jesus is talking about?
Giving Thanks for God's Goodness

These verses are about mariners. They are about sea-faring men. And I am going to compare their experience with yours for a few minutes here this morning. I think that you will be able to be a more thankful person if you will consider 3 things with me from these verses. 1st of all – You should consider that God is sovereign over all the storms of your life, and for this you should give Him thanks. (verses 23-26a) 2nd – You should consider that God can calm the storm, and give you quiet, and for this you should give Him thanks. (verses 26b-29) And 3rd- You should consider that God is the One who guides you to your desired haven, and for this you should give Him thanks. (verse 30-32)

Thankful to take the Lowest Place

The truth that Jesus is teaching in this passage is that a true disciple of His; one who knows Him and who would do Him service, is the person who is humble. This is something which Christ would have each of us to learn. I want to tie this truth in with the theme of Thanksgiving Day in this way. I believe that the person who is thankful, will; being taught by the grace of God; become humble. But in becoming humble, he will not turn in on himself and become an island to himself. He will look out from himself to see how he might serve Christ. This begins when a person comes to see how their attitudes in relation to themselves and others need to change to become more like the person who Jesus describes in this parable, so that God will be glorified in their life. So let us ask ourselves 3 questions in relation to this parable to determine whether we are making progress in becoming the humble, and holy, and loving people that Jesus would have us to be? 1st – Are you thankful to have received the invitation to this wedding feast that Jesus is talking about? (Verses 7-9) 2ndly – Are you willing to show forth your thankfulness in taking the lowest position at the table? (Verses 10 and 11) And 3rdly- Will you continue to have a thankful spirit, looking to do the Lord's bidding, as you wait to go up higher at the table to which you have been called? (Verses 12-14)
