Revealing of Jonah's heart

In chapter 4 we have revealed for us the motive for Jonah's behavior. He did what he did out of duty and not from his heart. Jonah wanted all the grace and mercy God had for him but wanted destruction for his enemies. He was more concerned about material possessions than thousands of lives. We can't hide from God, so we might as well obey from the get go.

Jonah and the great repentance

Repentance means sorrow for something said or done with a change of mind and action. Here God had told Jonah to go preach to the people of Nineveh but Jonah had refused to do has he was told. His disobedience cost him dearly. After taking a trip inside that fish Jonah was now willing to go and preach but it doesn't appear that he offered them the same grace and mercy God had showed him as that he only preached destruction and said nothing about how to avoid it. It would appear he was not going with a heart of true repentance. As we see by the end of the chapter the people took a chance that they could get God's attention by trying to repent and they were right.

The rescue of Jonah

To rescue means to free or deliver from confinement. Here Jonah recognized that God had saved him from drowning in the sea. He found out that even in his backslidden state God still heard him. He had stopped looking to God but now he was going back like he should have to fulfill his vows. After all this Jonah went through God saw some results. Has God rescued you in an unusual way? Have you thanked Him for it?

The request and refusal of Jonah

Jonah was a real person, and not some made up character, who even Jesus referenced at one point in His ministry. He was given an assignment to go and preach to his enemy but instead he chose to run from his calling and the presence of God. What he found was that we can't get away from God and in fact God sent a hurricane out after him to get his attention. Has God called on you to do something that you don't want to do? Will you go along with God or enroll in Jonah's university?
