Christmas Condemned By Christ (1/3) Puritan Teaching On Roman Catholic Holy Days

Proves that the Bible condemns all man-invented holy days (Christ-mass, Easter, etc.). Citations from the early church, Luther, Calvin, the Church of Scotland, a Dutch Synod & Civil Government (1625), the British Colonies in the U.S. and the Westminster Assembly all speak with one voice against this Pagan/Romish corruption. Common objections against the classic Reformed position are also answered. Christmas: Classic Reformation (Puritan and Reformed) Teaching (Free Books, Videos and MP3s) http://ow.ly/dexDy PURITAN HARD DRIVE SUPER SALE http://bit.ly/ci3g2z C.H. Spurgeon, in the Treasury of David, on Psalm 81:4, wrote, "When it can be proved that the observance of Christmas, Whitsuntide, and other Popish festivals was ever instituted by a divine statute, we also will attend to them, but not till then. It is as much our duty to reject the traditions of men, as to observe the ordinances of the Lord. We ask concerning every rite and rubric, 'Is this a law of the God of Jacob?'"
Christmass Condemned By Christ 2/3 Puritan & Reformation Teaching On Roman Catholic (Antichrist)/Pagan Holy Days (Easter Too)

Demonstrates why it dishonors God to celebrate Christ-mass. Shows that Scripture never commands keeping this "holy" day and that there is no evidence that Christ & the Apostles ever observed this day -- in fact, this syncretism of paganism and "Babylonian" Christianity was not first celebrated until 354 A.D. (when Dec. 25 was chosen, in accord with the Pagan feast of Saturnalia, as the day of "celebration"). More information on this topic, including a link to the FREE BOOK Christmas: A Biblical Critique, is at the link below (search for Christmas). C.H. We ask concerning every rite and rubric, 'Is this a law of the God of Jacob?'" ORIGIN OF THE WORD The word for Christmas in late Old English is Cristes Maesse, the Mass of Christ, first found in 1038, and Cristes-messe, in 1131. In Dutch it is Kerst-misse, in Latin Dies Natalis, whence comes the French Noël, and Italian Il natale; in German Weihnachtsfest, from the preceeding sacred vigil. The term Yule is of disputed origin. It is unconnected with any word meaning "wheel". The name in Anglo-Saxon was geol, feast: geola, the name of a month (cf. Icelandic iol a feast in December).

For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob. When it can be proved that the observance of Christmas, Whitsuntide, and other Popish festivals was ever instituted by a divine statute, we also will attend to them, but not till then.
A Puritan Reformed Discussion of Holy Days (Lord's Day/Christian Sabbath, Christmas, Easter, etc.)

Covers various Scriptures, including the fourth commandment, and how it is related to man-made holy days like Christmass, Easter, etc. Argues that these man-made days are unwarranted and have the effect of diminishing the zeal with which the Lord's Day is kept holy, even, in some cases, leading to a disregard for the sanctity of the Sabbath altogether. Answers questions related to charges of legalism and fanaticism in regard to the Covenanter/Puritan/Presbyterian teaching regarding holy days, as well as in relation to keeping the commandments of God in general. Also gives biblical strategies for dealing with believers & unbelievers that do not understand this issue. CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON ON READING 'As the apostle says to Timothy, so also he says to everyone, 'Give yourself to reading.' He who will not use the thoughts of other men's brains proves that he has no brains of his own. You need to read. Renounce as much as you will all light literature, but study as much as possible sound theological works, especially the Puritanic writers, and expositions of the Bible. The best way for you to spend your leisure is to be either reading or praying.' For a huge online selection of free & discounted Reformation resources (Calvinism & Calvinistic works, Puritanism, Reformed Baptist, Presbyterian, Covenanter, Christian history, etc.), books, MP3s, CDs, DVDs, debates, articles, etc., please visit SWRB's home page at the 'Outside Web Link' below.
