Calvinism DVD Collection (3 for 1 Sale) http://www.swrb.com/Puritan/calvinism-bookshelf-CDs.htm +++ The Westminster Confession Of Faith states, CHAPTER XXI. Of Religious Worship and the Sabbath-day. I. The light of nature showeth that there is a God, who hath lordship and sovereignty over all; is good, and doeth good unto all; and is therefore to be feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served with all the hearth, and with all the soul, and with all the might. But the acceptable way of worshipping the true God is instituted by himself, and so limited by his own revealed will, that he may not be worshipped according to the imaginations and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representation or any other way not prescribed in the holy Scripture. II. Religious worship is to be given to God, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; and to him alone: not to angels, saints, or any other creature: and since the Fall, not without a Mediator; nor in the mediation of any other but of Christ alone. III. Prayer with thanksgiving, being one special part of religious worship, is by God required of all men; and that it may be accepted, it is to be made in the name of the Son, by the help of his Holy Spirit, according to his will, with understanding, reverence, humility, fervency, faith, love, and perseverance; and, if vocal, in a known tongue.
Instrumental Music in the Public Worship of Church - The Classic Puritan, Covenanter, Cameronian, Presbyterian & Reformed View

Quotes from Calvin, Owen, Edwards, Rutherford, Gillespie, Henderson, Baillie, Calderwood, Dickson, and others citing and expounding on the old Reformed position. Instrumental music in public worship was a regulated circumstance of Old Covenant worship and thus John Calvin writes, "From this it appears that the Papists, as I shall have occasion to show elsewhere, in employing instrumental music cannot be said so much to imitate the practice of God's ancient people as to ape it in a senseless and absurd manner, exhibiting a silly delight in that worship of the Old Testament which was figurative and terminated with the gospel." You may be shocked to see the strong and unanimous testimony, given by these famous and much respected Reformers, against the use of musical instruments in public worship of the one true and living God. More extensive argumentation of the classic Puritan and Reformation position on this topic can also be found in a number of the free MP3s at http://www.sermonaudio.com/go/328 (cut and paste this link into your browser). "You may want to purchase a collection of Reformed books from Still Waters Revival Books in CD-ROM format.
Reformation Worship & Separation by the Puritan John Owen

Question 1. Whether persons who have engaged unto reformation and another way of divine worship, according to the word of God, as they believe, may lawfully go unto and attend on the use of the Common-prayer book in divine worship? Question 2. A second inquiry is, Whether the persons before mentioned and described may lawfully, and in a consistency with, or without a renunciation of their former principles and practice, go to and receive the sacraments of the Lord's supper in the parish churches, under their present constitution and administration? Religious worship not divinely instituted and appointed is false worship, not accepted with God; but the liturgical worship intended is a religious worship not divinely instituted nor appointed: ergo, not accepted of God. That which was in its first contrivance, and hath been in its continuance, an invention or engine to defeat or render useless the promise of Christ unto his church of sending the Holy Spirit in all ages, to enable it unto a due discharge and performance of all divine worship in its assemblies, is unlawful to be complied withal, nor can be admitted in religious worship; but such is the liturgical worship: ergo, etc. ************* For a huge online selection of free & discounted Reformation resources (Calvinism & Calvinistic works, Puritanism, Reformed Baptist, Presbyterian, Covenanter, Christian history, etc.), books, MP3s, CDs, etc., please visit SWRB's home page at the 'Outside Web Link' below.

Instrumental Music in the Public Worship of the Church 1 of 5 (Second Commandment In Covenanter, Puritan & Reformation Worship)

This audio message includes "The Question Stated and I. General Argument From Scripture," from Girardeau's book "Instrumental Music in the Public Worship of the Church." Written in 1888, this book was highly praised by R.L. Dabney. Dabney notes, 'Dr. Girardeau has defended the old usage of our church with a moral courage, loyalty to truth, clearness of reasoning and wealth of learning which should make every true Presbyterian proud of him, whether he adopts his conclusions or not. The framework of his argument is this: it begins with that vital truth which no Presbyterian can discard without a square desertion of our principles. The man who contests this first premise had better set out at once for Rome: God is to be worshipped only in the ways appointed in His Word. Every act of public cultus not positively enjoined by Him is thereby forbidden. Christ and His apostles ordained the musical worship of the New Dispensation without any sort of musical instrument, enjoining only the singing of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Hence such instruments are excluded from Christian worship. Such has been the creed of all churches, and in all ages, except for the Popish communion after it had reached the nadir of its corruption at the end of the thirteenth century, and of its prelatic imitators.' This book, as well as other books about purity in worship, is available on Reformation Bookshelf CD volume 19. This Reformation CD & 29 others are at the 'Outside Web Link" below.

Our books may come to be seen where ourselves shall never be heard. These may preach where the author cannot, and (which is more) when he is not.' This prediction by one of the great Puritans has had many fulfillments. An ungodly Welsh clergyman, shopping at a fair in the eighteenth century, bought an article which happened to be wrapped in a page torn from an old Puritan folio. The reading of that one page led to his sound conversion. As Luther said, 'Satan hates the use of pens,' and never were pens more powerfully wielded in the cause of God than by the Puritan divines of the seventeenth century. Nor have their books outlived their usefulness. Although the original volumes are worn with age, the truths found in them are as fresh as the new formats in which they are now appearing. - Forward, Richard Sibbes, The Bruised Reed. Your 62 CD's of Reformation & Puritan authors are a great boon to studies in the Reformed-Puritan experiential tradition.
Paedocommunion 1 of 2 by Dr. Francis Nigel Lee, Lord's Supper, Communion, Children

In the last couple of decades there has been increasing interest in the Reformation among Bible-believing Christians. This has included a revival of Reformation doctrines and practices like Calvinist soteriology, historicist eschatology, and the regulative principle of worship. These developments are important and extremely positive. Ironically, while more people are drawn to Reformation truths, others who are already in the Reformed camp are being drawn away from the Reformation in certain areas. One such area is the issue of paedocommunionism, or the view that all baptized children (and infants) should partake of the Lord's Supper. Paedocommunion is unscriptural and opposed by all of the historic Reformed and Presbyterian confessions. In fact, one could say that it is a dangerous heresy that is causing division in many churches. In his book Calvin's Convincing Antipaedocommunionism, Dr. Francis Nigel Lee demonstrates how strongly John Calvin opposed paedocommunion. Calvin was familiar with the arguments used to justify that practice, and he refuted them at different points in his work. He strongly believed that no one -- including baptized children -- should ever be allowed to partake of the Lord's Supper without being catechized. Lee provides numerous quotations from various books by Calvin where this point is made. This book is available on all 30 Reformation Bookshelf CDs (in the 'FREE BOOKS' file) at the 'Outside Web Link' below.

Paedocommunion 2 of 2 Lord's Supper by Dr. Francis Nigel Lee

This message contains the question and answer session following part one. As Lee points out, 'speaking specifically of infants and children, Calvin observes that they 'cannot partake worthily without being able duly to discern the sanctity of the Lord's body.' Consequently, seeing that the swallowing of the bread and wine by the unworthy is 'poison' to them at Holy Communion -- 'Why should we stretch out poison to our young children -- instead of vivifying food?!'' (p. 12).
Exclusive Psalmody: A Scriptural Exegesis of Col. 3:16 and Eph. 5:19

One of the best-argued short writings defending the exclusive use of Psalms in the public worship of the Lord's day service. Focuses on some of the most hotly debated texts. Explains what the early church called Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs. A great introduction to this topic. This is just one chapter from the book The Psalms in Worship. Dr. David Freeman (who was John Murray's pastor in Philadelphia) said that the Psalms in Worship was the most comprehensive treatment of this subject to be found anywhere. This volume (of almost 600 pages) consists of material presented at two conventions in 1905, promoting the claims of the Psalms in worship. Two articles covering each of 27 related topics comprise this volume, making a total of 54 separate papers (all thoroughly indexed and including a new appendix added by the publisher). Articles included range from argumentative discussions of a doctrinal and critical kind (defending exclusive Psalmody, the regulative principle of worship, etc.), to broader discussions along historical, literary, and practical lines. This is a one of a kind publication and nothing else like it is available today. To order this book please visit http://www.swrb.com/catalog/m.htm and look under the authors name, John McNaugher.
Exclusive Psalmody 1/7 Inspired Song Vs. Uninspired Song, Price

In the sermon Covenanter minister Greg Price deals with the distinctions between elements and circumstances in worship, the distinction between regulated and unregulated circumstances, and the nature of the type of songs God requires in worship. He specifically answers the question: Does Scripture require inspired songs in public worship? He provides answers from the classic Puritan, Reformed, Presbyterian, Covenanter position by covering a number of Scriptures on these topics, as well as answering common objections. McNaugher's The Psalms in Worship (SWRB) and Bushell’s The Songs of Zion (Crown and Covenant) should also be consulted. "It is the duty of Christians to praise God publickly, by the singing of psalms together in the congregation, and also privately in the family" (The Directory for the Publick (Public) Worship of God; Agreed Upon by the Assembly of Divines at Westminster... as a Part of the Covenanted Uniformity in Religion... with an Act of the General Assembly, and Act of Parliament, Both in Anno 1645 Approving & Establishing the Said Directory). "The duties required in the second commandment are, the receiving, observing, and keeping pure and entire, all such religious worship and ordinances as God hath instituted in his word... also the disapproving, detesting, opposing, all false worship; and, according to each one's place and calling, removing it, and all monuments of idolatry" (Westminster Larger Catechism, partial answer to Question 108, 1648). "If you want to understand Reformed theology the Puritan Hard Drive is unsurpassed, outside the Bible itself." - Pastor Greg Price (Author, Theologian, Covenanter) http://ow.ly/gAu3F.

Instrumental Music in the Public Worship of the Church 3 of 5 (Second Commandment In Covenanter, Puritan & Reformation Worship)

This message is Chapter 3 from this Girardeau's book, titled the "Argument from the New Testament." John Calvin writes, 'We are to remember that the worship of God was never understood to consist in such outward services, which were only necessary to help forward a people as yet weak and rude in knowledge in the spiritual worship of God. A difference is to be observed in this respect between his people under the Old and under the New Testament; for now that Christ has appeared, and the church has reached full age, it were only to bury the light of the gospel should we introduce the shadows of a departed dispensation. From this it appears that the Papists, as I shall have occasion to show elsewhere, in employing instrumental music cannot be said so much to imitate the practice of God's ancient people as to ape it in a senseless and absurd manner, exhibiting a silly delight in that worship of the Old Testament which was figurative and terminated with the gospel.' This book, as well as other books about purity in worship, is available on Reformation Bookshelf CD volume 19. This Reformation CD & 29 others are at the 'Outside Web Link' below. ************************************ This collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth. - Dr. Jonathan D. Moore, Cambridge, UK. (Scholar of 16th & 17th century Calvinistic literature.)

This message is Chapter 4 from Girardeau's book, titled the 'Argument from the Presbyterian Standards.' Arguments from Scripture, history and creedal standards are all considered, while objections are noted and countered. Defending the Apostolic (and later Puritan and Reformed) position, against Popish innovations, Girardeau clearly lays down what God requires in the area of public worship. Given the present rejection of the regulative principle of worship (which is nothing less than the biblical application of the second commandment) in most Protestant quarters, this book is even more valuable today than when it was first written. It contains the best discussion of biblical and godly guidelines regarding worship in general, and the instrumental music question in particular, that has come to us out of the 19th century. This book, as well as other books about purity in worship, is available on Reformation Bookshelf CD volume 19. This Reformation CD & 29 others are at the 'Outside Web Link' below. ************************************ Your 62 CD's of Reformation & Puritan authors are a great boon to studies in the Reformed-Puritan experiential tradition.

Explains why our Puritan and Reformed forefathers called the use of instrumental music in public worship "the badge of Popery" -- which they believed overturned the work of Christ and reintroduced the shadows of the Old Testament (which the light of Christ had abolished) back into public worship. Part 2 of 2 in this series is called Instrumental Music in Public Worship in the New Testament.

This message is Chapter 2, the "Argument from the Old Testament." 'To sing the praises of God upon the harp and psaltery,' says John Calvin, 'unquestionably formed a part of the training of the law and of the service of God under that dispensation of shadows and figures; but they are not now to be used in public thanksgiving.' Calvin continues, 'With respect to the tabret, harp, and psaltery, we have formerly observed, and will find it necessary afterwards to repeat the same remark, that the Levites, under the law, were justified in making use of instrumental music in the worship of God; it having been his will to train his people, while they were yet tender and like children, by such rudiments until the coming of Christ. But now, when the clear light of the gospel has dissipated the shadows of the (ceremonial--RB) law and taught us that God is to be served in a simpler form, it would be to act a foolish and mistaken part to imitate that which the prophet enjoined only upon those of his own time.'
Regulative Principle of Worship in the New Testament (The Second Commandment In Covenanter, Puritan and Reformation Worship)

+++ HOW TO GET 60 NEW SWRB CDs FOR FREE (FOR A LIMITED TIME) +++ http://www.swrb.com/Puritan/calvinism-bookshelf-CDs.htm This sermons defends the Biblical (Reformation, Puritan, Covenanter) regulative principle of worship from the New Testament. Also exposes Arminianism in worship (will-worship). For much more on this topic please see our Reformation Worship Sale at the link below (for more free and discounted Puritan and Reformed books, MP3s and CDs on this important topic). John Calvin wrote, "If it be asked, then, by what things chiefly the Christian religion has a standing amongst us, and maintains its truth, it will be found that the following two not only occupy the principal place, but comprehend under them all the other parts, and consequently the whole substance of Christianity, viz., a knowledge first, of the right way to worship God; and secondly of the source from which salvation is to be sought. When these are kept out of view, though we may glory in the name of Christians, our profession is empty and vain." - Cited in, Carlos, Eire, _War Against the Idols: The Reformation of Worship_, p. 198, citing from Calvin's _On the Necessity of Reforming the Church_ FREE at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/NRC_ch00.htm. "Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen" (1 John 5:21). "But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men" (Matthew 15:9).

The Scriptural Law of Worship Is the Regulative Principle of Worship, RPW, Reformed

This message is taken from the book The Psalms in Worship. This book is also available on Reformation Bookshelf CD volume 19 available at the 'Outside Web Link' below. ************************************ Your 62 CD's of Reformation & Puritan authors are a great boon to studies in the Reformed-Puritan experiential tradition. Receive our hearty thanks for your invaluable work in making so many rare gems accessible to thousands. - Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

What is Close Communion? 1/2 Apostolic/Covenanter Teaching And Practice Concerning the Lord's Supper From Scripture

Explains and defends the Apostolic teaching and practice concerning the Lord's Supper from Scripture. Demonstrates how this was also classic Reformation practice, written into the best Reformed confessions, covenants and Acts of General Assemblies. Moreover, Calvin and many other individual leaders of Reformation are shown to have upheld this position. Price also shows how close communion exhibits Christian love and is one of the great means of grace to bring visible unity to the Church of Jesus Christ.

In Defense of Close Communion, Classic Presbyterian Reformed Teaching, Lord's Supper

A fantastic treatment of the Lord's supper upholding the plain and clear teaching of Scripture. Shows how open violations of God's law are grounds for barring people from the Lord's table. Also demonstrates how close communion is nothing more than the old Presbyterian view, in keeping with the Westminster Confession of Faith and John Calvin when he stated, "We are only contending about the true and lawful constitution of the church, required in the communion not only of the sacraments (which are the signs of profession) but also especially of doctrine" (Institutes 2.12). Helps prove that all forms of open communion (including the heresy of Paedocommunion) are in error and how open communion destroys both the purity and peace of the church. Much more on this topic is available on the Puritan Hard Drive. "In the history of the church’s sanctification I don’t believe there has been a more valuable extra-biblical resource and tool than the Puritan Hard Drive... It holds some of the most priceless Reformed works of God-centered and Christ-glorifying truth that were ever penned." - Dr. Matthew McMahon, A Puritan's Mind. http://bit.ly/ci3g2z.

“The inevitable tendency of occasional hearing and its ultimate issue is open communion, -- the overthrow of all creeds, confessions and testimonies; all Subordinate Standards and final apostasy” (David Steele, A Short Vindication of Our Covenanted Reformation, p. 50, 1879, http://www.swrb.com/catalog/S.htm). These truths about biblical separation, which have been prominent from Old Testament times (and in all great subsequent Reformations) are clearly, simply and Scripturally presented here by Greg Price.

PAUL WASHER: "The Puritan Hard Drive is a tremendous blessing... you can easily do ten hours worth of research in just seconds! ... In the history of extra-biblical study tools there has never been a resource as useful as the Puritan Hard Drive." - Pastor Paul Washer, HeartCry Missionary Society, Author, Conference Speaker, etc. http://ow.ly/fPY4o _____________ "Let me tell you how absolutely fantastic the Puritan Hard Drive really is. This is a treasure trove for a local church pastor. The search ability is beyond my expectation. It's absolutely phenomenal. It's the best for the money you'll ever get anyplace in books. You cannot exhaust them. It's impossible. It's so vast. But I'm telling you, as far as a research tool, it's second to none. Unbelievable stuff. And the search, the search function is just beautiful. The Puritan Hard Drive is a treasure trove for a local church pastor. I am greatly improved by it and I anticipate the pace of worldwide reformation to be improved as well." - Pastor Scott Brown (Hope Baptist Church, Wake Forest, NC), Director of The National Center For Family Integrated Churches, Author, Conference Speaker, etc. http://ow.ly/fPY4o _____________ "The Puritan Hard Drive is an exquisite piece of work. ... Truly, if a Christian wants to invest wisely in his own growth, this is the best investment he can make at this time. More than highly recommended!
