Epilogue: Imminence and Invitation GR 891

There's no other book of scripture more strongly and directly attested and recommended for study than the book of Revelation. I mention that because many people say it's a difficult book, so I don't spend much time with it. Better realize the weight that God gives to this book, because it's crucial to understanding much of the rest of prophetic scripture. Now John is going to give us the conclusion, or epilogue, to the book. There will be three subjects that will repeat as we move through this conclusion. The first is that there is this is the genuine word of God. Secondly, there is an emphasis on the soon return of Jesus Christ. Thirdly, there is a clear contrast drawn between the believer and the unbeliever. And within that context there is a very gracious invitation extended. There is still time for you to come and partake of the water of life at no charge. But the time is very short.

Man was created with the privilege of walking in perfect harmony and fellowship with the God who had made him. But in Genesis chapter 3, Adam and Eve sinned. And when they sinned, the curse of God's judgment cam upon them, and upon all that God had created. But the death of Jesus Christ has made it possible for you and I to be forgiven our sins. We still face the reality of death, we still have pain and hardship and trial and difficulty in your life. But God has promised that ultimately all pain , suffering, sorrow and death will be annihilated from the creation and we will return to a perfect world, in a perfect environment with men and women living in a perfect relationship of harmony with their God.

The New Jerusalem will be the residence of God the Father and God the Son. It will also be the residence of all the glorified saints from the Old Testament time Israel down through the New Testament period and the church age. If you have trusted Christ as your Saviour what we are going to consider today is a description of the place that Christ has prepared for you to live in the presence of His Father for all eternity.

Two Roads, Two Destinies Only GR 888

Verse 13 of Matthew 7, Enter by the narrow gate for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it. What Jesus sets down here is very simple and very clear. He divides all humanity into two groups. The groups are divided on the basis of having entered one gate or the other, they are traveling on one road or the other, and they are moving toward one destiny or the other. All the options are condensed into two. Two gates, two roads, two destinies. Now if you come over to Revelation, chapter 21 at the end of chapter 20, verses 11-15, we had pictured very clearly the final destiny of those who came through the broad gate, traveled life on the broad road, and have ended up in destruction, eternal suffering in hell.

The Great White Throne Judgment

One of the values of moving through the Scripture in a systematic, way is you cover everything that God has said, even the things you'd rather not have to talk about and judgment is not one of the more pleasant subjects, but it is certainly one of the most necessary. Though we might wish that there were not such a thing as coming judgment, the reality of the matter is God has spoken very clearly, directly, and repeatedly to the matter of judgment, and solemnly warned us to be ready for judgment to come.

Look in chapter 5 of Revelation, verse 9. Throne room scene in heaven. You are worthy to take the book and to break its seals for you were slain and did purchase for God, with your blood, men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and you have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God. And they will reign upon the earth. In the millenium, the nation's of the world will maintain their national identities, and we will rule over nations. We will receive authority from Christ to make Decisions. There will be sin, there will be rebellion against Christ in the millennium and when that occurs within the realm for which we are responsible, we will exercise judgment in many of those cases.

Three Viewpoints on Millennialism GR 885

Pre-Millenialism teaches that Jesus Christ will come to earth and establish a kingdom on the earth for a thousand years. A-Millenalism spiritualizes the thousand years. At the end of all things Christ will return and eternity begins. No physical, earthly kingdom. This was the view of the reformers, John Calvin, Martin Luther and so on. It's the view of the Roman Catholic Church which is where the reformers got it and it is the dominant view of, groups like the Lutherans. Post-millennialism teaches that over time the world will get better and better and ultimately we will bring in the millennium Then at the end of the thousand years, Christ Himself will return. I do not believe the Bible teaches the world is going to get better and better. Or that we ought to impose Mosaic morality on our world. The only view that handles scripture in a normal or literal way is pre-millenialism.

God's New Covenant With Israel

We're talking about some of the events that take place in this period of time, just before the millennium or earthly kingdom actually begins. The scripture indicates that there is a period of time 75 days, to be precise, between the return of Christ to earth at Armageddon and the establishing of the millennial kingdom. I want to talk about the subject of the resurrection of Old Testament saints and tribulation saints and the marriage of Jehovah to Israel again, and it will be a remarriage, as we'll see. It was a marriage that had taken place that was broken by Israel's unfaithfulness and a bill of divorcement but Israel will be joined to Jehovah again in marriage.

Judgment of the Living In the Last Days

At Armageddon all the armies of the world in Palestine suffer destruction, but there are many people around the world who were not at Armageddon and so who have not experienced death. They have survived the seven-year period leading up to the return of Christ. They were not part of the armies at Armageddon. So we have now set up the throne of Christ on earth to exercise judgment over the living on the earth. It is Jews and gentiles who are physically alive on the earth when Christ returns at His second coming. They have survived the tribulation, they have survived Armageddon and now they will be called before Christ to be judged. The unbelievers will be killed. The believers will go into the kingdom that He is going to establish.

Abrahamic Covenant in the Last Days

The 7-year tribulation is primarily Jewish in character. We call it the 70th week of Daniel. That comes out of Daniel, chapter 9, verses 24 and following where Daniel is told 70 weeks or 70 sevens are determined upon your people and your holy city, Jerusalem. Seven sevens, 490 years are what are necessary to bring Israel to the point of the establishing of the kingdom on earth that God had promised. The first 483 years concluded shortly before the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Then there is a gap or a space, now almost 2000 years. Then there will be the rapture of the church. Then there will be a seven year, 70th week of Daniel, that will complete that program in preparing Israel for the kingdom. It's important as we move through Revelation that we keep in mind what God is doing with Israel. He's disciplining them for their sin and He's bringing them to their knees so that they will believe in the Messiah.

All that's been recorded in Revelation regarding judgement on the earth and the return of Jesus Christ to earth in judgment is directed to us as the church of Jesus Christ to encourage us and challenge us in our walk with God in these days. Our study of future prophetic matters is not just to satisfy some curiosity that we might have, but rather it is to stir our souls as we realize that history is moving toward a dramatic climax and confrontation with Jesus Christ, and the full display of the fierce wrath of God the Almighty will be poured out on men and women who have not responded to the invitation to come and partake of the water of life without cost. Our role in this day in which we live as the church of Jesus Christ is to be passionate about living for Christ, to be passionate in carrying the message of life to men and women in light of the fact they are rushing toward judgment, and there is no hope except the salvation that God has provided in His grace.

Go back in your mind to the first coming of Christ, a relatively unheralded, unnoticed event. His birth took place in a little town called Bethlehem, about five miles from the capitol city of Jerusalem. Now, the second coming of Christ to earth is in stark, clear, marked contrast to His first coming. His first coming was quiet, unnoticed, obscure. His second coming will be of such magnitude and splendor that everyone in the world will know the Almighty Son of God has broken forth from heaven and come to earth. After the tribulation, after the 70th week of Daniel and particularly the last 3 1/2 years,

The first part of Revelation 19 is devoted to the rejoicing and celebration of Heaven over the sovereign work of God in judging sin and preparing the way for the establishing of His kingdom on earth. The last half is devoted to the events surrounding the return of Jesus Christ to earth at Armageddon and the final destruction of His enemies. There are two parallel lines that flow through Scripture. The first is the strong and clear emphasis on the justice of God and His righteousness which will result in the destruction of the wicked. There is a second emphasis that is just as clear running through the Scripture and that is God in mercy and grace has redeemed a people for Himself. The curse will be lifted from the creation, the desert will blossom as a rose and the redeemed will enjoy the glorious presence of God, even on earth. That's where we are when we come to verses 7, 8 and 9 of Revelation 19.

There is no greater responsibility or privilege placed upon us as human beings than to worship the living God. The Scripture indicates that worship is a response to God, to who God is and to what God does, and as our hearts bow before Him in worship, we are really giving a response to who God is as God, His very nature and being, and thus the One worthy of worship. As we come into Revelation, chapter 19 we are transported again into a heavenly scene where worship is occurring in the very presence of God in heaven. It will be our privilege when we are joined in God's presence to heaven, in heaven to devote ourselves to the worship of the God who alone is worthy of worship. That is why what we are doing here as a church, believers in Jesus Christ as a preparation and a foretaste of what awaits us in heaven.

In our study of biblical prophecy, we're not just satisfying curiosity, just learning points of interest about things that may take place on this earth, but we're really dealing with material that is essential for us in living our lives day by day. I realize that there is always a danger as we move through an extended study of prophecy, such as a study of the book of Revelation is, that we can sometimes wonder is this really pertinent and pertinent and applicable to my life today? You know, I'm struggling at times with seeming overwhelming pressures and difficulties. Does it really make any difference to me what's going to happen to Israel in the 70th week of Daniel? If the church is going to be raptured before the 70th week of Daniel, can't we just let those events in God's hands, and deal with things that might help us be more effective in serving Christ today, in dealing with sin today?

It is exciting to be constantly reminded that Jesus Christ is coming again. When He comes for the church in the air at what we call the rapture, we will be caught up to meet Him and then taking i--, taken into the presence of His Father in heaven itself. As we saw in Revelation 4 and 5 we will be joined around the throne with the angels declaring His praises. And its of utmost importance that you and I as believers in Jesus Christ not lose the focus of what the Scripture says is the blessed hope of the believer, that our lives be arranged around that focal point, Jesus Christ is coming again, coming again for the church. We are in Revelation, chapter 18 approximately seven years after the rapture of the church. The rapture of the church occurring, being followed by what is called the 70th week of Daniel , seven years of tribulation and turmoil on the earth during which satan makes one final attempt to impose his rule over the world.

We are moving toward the time of greatest satanic influence and power in the world. But no matter what the difficulties, we as believers have a settled confidence. Our God is in control. Sinful man can do nothing to frustrate the plans of God. Isn't it amazing? To the very end, the enemies of God will fight to the death. Some of you have evidenced the same stubbornness in rejecting the salvation that God has provided in Jesus Christ. In planting your feet in arrogance and pride against the sovereignty of God and the clarity of His declaration that you are a sinner, His enemy and His foe. But in love He has provided redemption and you must turn from your sin and bow the knee before Him, placing your faith in Jesus Christ as the one who died on the cross to pay the penalty for your sin, and when you do that you are forgiven and cleansed and born into God's family.

All the empires that have come and gone have been satanically controlled and motivated. They have been attempts by Satan to oppose the plan of God. The scriptures have laid down clearly what empire would follow another empire and what the climax of all earthly empires will be. Two things ought to come out of that for believers. Number one, an awe of our God and His sovereign control over all. And number two, it ought to put an end to the foolishness that sometimes infects the church that there are godly earthly empires. Or particularly that the United States is an exception.

We pick up that title of the queen of heaven and associate it with doctrines relating to the virgin Mary. You see here that the worship of the queen of heaven antedates Christ by at least 500 years because Jeremiah the prophet is condemning it in Israel. We will have an apostate worship system in the 70th week of Daniel in which the Catholic church is going to play a key role. The protestant church is also going to play a key role. But the indication would seem to be that the Roman Catholic church will be leading the way. The protestant church is every bit as pagan in it's practices but does not have the solidified power that the Roman church has.

Satan's plan, as he attempts to implement it on the earth during the seventieth week of Daniel will also have a city, Babylon, that will be a harlot, not a true bride. This harlot is seen as being in a position of power, authority, and influence over the peoples and nations of the world. That influence will be for evil, not good. The kings of the earth, the mighty rulers; and the people of the earth, who have not come to believe in the salvation God has provided in His Son, are all joined together in relationships with this woman.

Because of the redemption that Jesus Christ has provided for us as members of His body, the church of Jesus Christ, we will be called from the earth to meet Him in the air. And so taken to be with the Lord. That's discussed in I Corinthians, chapter 15, and I Thessalonians, chapter 4. So it's a reminder of the greatness and completeness of our salvation. That we shall be removed from the earth and all of these terrible judgments are not for us, but for a world that has rejected Him.

The Bible clearly presents that there is ongoing warfare, waged in the spiritual realm, between Satan and his followers and God and those who are His servants. The issue is: Who will be God? Who will be worshipped? In Revelation 16 you have Satan, his false christ, and his false holy spirit, gathering all of his resources from the world together for one final climactic battle with God. You say, how foolish. Why doesn't he just read Revelation, chapters 16 and 19, then fall on his knees and repent. The same reason multiplied millions of people on earth don't do that today. They're hardened in their sin and deceived by their sin to think, I'll pull it off. It won't come out like this at all. We don't realize how hardened in sin we really are but for the grace of God.

Revelation 16 contains the prophetic record of the most awful, judgment that the wrath of God will ever bring upon a sin cursed world. What should a holy and righteous God do with people who have spurned His grace and mercy, who stand with unbowed shoulders, arrogantly blaspheming Him as He pours out His wrath on their sin? Just forget it and go on? There would be no moral order in the universe if God functioned in such a way.

People wave their bibles and quote Micah that we ought to be beating our weapons into instruments of farming. But you can't pull a verse out of Scripture put it on a building, and then try to rally everybody. The peace movement and pacifism is based on a distortion of Scripture if it uses Scripture at all. Why not quote Joel 3:10? Take your instruments of farming and mold them into instruments of war. We're headed towards Armageddon, and there will be no peace until the Messiah conquers his enemies and rules over this earth.

One of the most vexing questions that we have to confront as the people of God is that of why do the wicked prosper and the righteous struggle and have trials and difficulty. It seems as though those who are indifferent to God, those who are rebellious to God, have a life of relative ease and prosperity in contrast often to those who are trying to live Godly lives. That's not a new problem or a new question. The righteous have often struggled with the prosperity of the wicked. And if we're honest we sometimes find ourselves asking "Is it really worth it? I've tried to be faithful to the Lord and it seems to only make my life more difficult."

The Consequences of Not Believing GR 864

The Bible is clear that there is an eternity after this life. Eternity will be spent in one of two places either in the Glory of God's presence which is heaven or separated from that Glory in the suffering and torment of hell. Many people, perhaps most people, are unwilling to consider that a God of love would ever be able to consign people to suffer day and night forever and ever in a place called hell. Our difficulty in this comes from two directions. Number one, we fail to have a true comprehension of God as a God of all holiness. And on the other side we fail to comprehend how depraved and vile and sinful we as human beings really are. We have lowered our concept of the holiness of God and raised our concept of man's sinfulness so that the gap between us is not that great. And while God of course is more holy than we are, we don't conceive of His holiness being so pure and bright and burning that it would consume any defilement.

The Commands of the Eternal Gospel GR 863

When you present the gospel to someone, you better begin with God. Let me tell you, there is a God. He is almighty and He is sovereign. He has brought all things into existence and some day He will call you into His presence to judge you and sentence you to an eternal Hell unless your sin is dealt with. We have completely corrupted the gospel of Jesus Christ today. We have seeker services, even though there are none who seek after God. How can you make fallen man comfortable in the presence of a God who is to be feared? When you call fallen man to fear God, it's not saying, don't be afraid of God, When the angel from Heaven comes with the gospel in Revelation 14, he starts out, fear God. Jesus, what's He say? Don't fear man, they can just kill the body. I'll tell you who to fear, fear God. He has power to cast you into an eternal hell. You must tremble in His presence.

Revelation 14:1 "And I looked and behold the Lamb was standing on Mount Zion with the 144,000". This gives us a glimpse to the end of this seven year period. And it is a reminder that God is sovereign. His purposes will be accomplished. His people will be victorious and the Messiah will reign. The wicked will be judged. Remember, the book of Revelation is about the redemption, the final, ultimate redemption of God's creation. The destiny of all humanity apart from Jesus Christ is an eternal hell to be tormented day and night into the ages of the ages. No matter what you think of that, that is truth because God said it and the only salvation is the salvation that you receive when you repent of your sins and cast yourself upon God's mercy believing that His Son, Jesus Christ, paid the penalty for your sin.

The Prophetic Enemies of Israel

Approximately 2,500 years ago. Ezekiel the prophet wrote about events and nations that we can specifically identify. Today we see them being arranged in a kind of federation. This fits them for being participants in a peace process, but their heart won't change. And under the leadership of Gog in the last days they will launch an attack against Israel, and suffer destruction at the hands of God, which will pave the way for the Antichrist to establish world dominion and carry on Satan's program.

The armies of the north and the south, the Islamic nations join together, and launch an attack on Israel. As a result of that attack, the leader of the western world, the antichrist, will come into the land of Palestine. He will go down into Egypt and Libya, the Sudan, subjugate them, he'll come back up into Palestine, establish his center there, set up himself in the temple and the last 3-1/2 years of the tribulation will take place and he ultimately will be destroyed by the direct intervention of the coming of the Messiah.

Revelation chapter 13 is a key, chapter in our study of Biblical prophecy. It focuses it's attention on events that will take place in the middle of the tribulation and then unfold during the last 3 ½ years, leading up to the return of Jesus Christ to earth to establish his kingdom. What is being set forth is the ongoing warfare between the forces of Satan and the people of God. The last 3-½ years of the tribulation present the culmination of the conflict between Satan and God. It's a warfare that has gone on down through history and that you and I are part of today. It's important that we understand the issue that is at the heart of what is taking place. The issue in this warfare is worship. Satan is attempting to usurp the place of God. So he is attempting to draw men and women to worship him.

Some of the material contained in this chapter is not found anywhere else in prophetic scripture. The two individuals that are brought to our attention in Revelation chapter 13 are only brought together in Revelation chapter 13. They are the two key men who will lead the world during the last three and a half years of the seventieth week of Daniel. That period of time will be brought to a climax by the personal bodily return from Heaven of Jesus Christ himself to establish his kingdom on the earth.

In Revelation, chapter 13, we see all the diverse and different empires and kingdoms of the world come to their climax in the universal reign of one sovereign man, a man who will unite political and religious power in himself. A man that will rule over according to the end of verse 7 of Revelation 13, every tribe and people and tongue and nation. He will have a worldwide dominion like no other person or empire has ever experienced. With that will be joined a universal worship of this man. In verse 4 of chapter 13 we are told that they worshipped the dragon, who is Satan, and they worshipped the beast. In verse 8 we are told, all who dwell on the earth will worship him. So you have people from every tribe, nation, nationality, joining together in submitting to his authority politically and joining together in offering him their worship as they recognize him as their god. This is the man we call the antichrist.

We're working our way through this great prophetic book, the last book in our bibles and it describes the culmination and climax of God's plans for this world that He has created. Now Satan, in his opposition to God, in his attempt to be like the Most High, works to counterfeit what God is doing and will do. And one of the ways that he is going to attempt to counterfeit the purposes and plans of God is to raise up a man who will be a counterfeit Christ. He will indeed rule over all the world for the three and a half years leading up to the second coming of Christ to earth to establish His kingdom. This man will be a false messiah. He will present himself to the world as a powerful, even supernatural person. A person who could be God in the flesh. Counterfeiting Jesus Christ, the man who indeed was God in flesh.

God's Program for the Nation Israel

The nation Israel occupies a unique place in the program of God. It is absolutely essential that we are clear on our understanding of Israel and its place in God's plan if we are to have any hope of understanding biblical prophecy. The bulk of biblical prophecy is about Jesus Christ and His plan and program for the nation Israel. That plan and program goes back to the Abrahamic covenant in Genesis chapter 12. When we talk about the Abrahamic covenant, we are talking about the promise of the land of Palestine to the Jews forever. History down to our present time, including the events of the seven year tribulation is part of God fulfilling that promise. The Abrahamic covenant, can't be annulled just because Abraham's descendants are disobedient. God was the one who made the covenant. God was the one who said, I alone will see that it is carried out.

"Because the accuser of our brethren has been cast down." The description of Satan here as the accuser of our brethren ought to interest every single believer intensely. Here is a passage that tells us very clearly what Satan is doing regarding believers today. He can be described as the accuser of our brethren. Satan is slandering and attacking the people of God, in the very presence of God in heaven. There is a war coming yet in the future between Michael and his angels and Satan and his angels. As a result of that warfare, Satan will no longer be permitted access to heaven. The casting out of Satan is tremendously significant to the people of heaven. His casting out of heaven intensifies the warfare taking place on earth.

God did not create sin. He created a perfect being, perfect in beauty, full of wisdom, who exercised his will to attempt to usurp the place that God had reserved for Himself. It is so clear, what's happening in the world today. We see a relentless emphasis on what, self. Exalting self. Self importance. Self esteem. Realize you're somebody. Well of course. Who is the god of this world? The whole world lies in the evil one, I John 5 tells us. What is the basic character and sin of the ruler of this world? I will be like God. I am wonderful. I am splendid. I am beautiful. I am full of wisdom. I will be God.

Biblical prophecy is about Jesus Christ. About His coming again. About the kingdom that He will establish. So we study prophecy because we love Him and want to know Him better. The study of Biblical prophecy also prepares us to live lives that are pleasing to Him right here and now. Because the things that will take place in the future prepare us to live right now. I understand where God is taking us. I understand something of what Satan is doing, something of what God is doing, and that helps to put my life in perspective right here and now. Many believers have allowed themselves to be deluded into thinking that it is God's plan that we live relaxed, comfortable lives, as we await the coming of Christ to take us to be with Himself. But the picture that the Scripture paints is of the people of God in ongoing relentless conflict and battle. And when that battle is lacking or absent, something is seriously wrong in the life that is being lived by God's people.

The book of Revelation is a book about the coming earthly kingdom of Jesus Christ, the Messiah of Israel. . The Messianic kingdom has not begun yet. No part of it is underway yet. When it begins, it will be a dramatic worldwide event, that all will know about. I stress this, because there's much misunderstanding on the kingdom. Many people today believe that the kingdom is spiritual and exists in hearts, and that fulfills the prophecies and promises. Some people believe the Messianic kingdom has begun, but we won't really come into full bloom until Christ is personally here. I find no support for that in Scripture either. The Bible is clear, that at a future point in time, Jesus Christ will personally appear from heaven, and come to earth, destroy His enemies, and establish a kingdom over the earth.

Six Summary Points of this sermon 1.God's servants are divinely protected until their work is finished. 2.God's servants are hated by the unbeliever. God chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 3.Unbelievers are tormented by the ministry of God's servants. You become the vehicle of convicting them and that conviction becomes sheer torment. 4.Unbelievers rejoice when the servants of God are removed. 5.God's servants will be victorious. Portrayed very graphically here in the resurrection of the two witnesses. 6.By God's grace the elect will be saved.

There are 2 basic views on the identity of these 2 witnesses among those who hold to a literal interpretation of Scripture. While there may be some discussion about the identity of these 2 men, the purpose and impact and result of their ministry is clearly set forth.

God raises two men up. He gives them supernatural authority, and power. Without that, they would be killed. They carry on a public ministry in the time when there is an all-out attempt to execute all Jews and all believers. Their message is of judgment and doom. They speak about the judgments that God is and will be pouring out, and the return of Christ at Armageddon. Their ministry is also to call the nation Israel to repentance. They will survive 'til the end of this 3 1/2 year period and then they will be martyred.

The temple of the tribulation, the alter associated with it and the people who worship in it are measured by God. And the measuring seems to indicate God is evaluating what is His. He's making a distinction between what belongs to Him and what is profane. There is a clear distinction being drawn between Jew and Gentile, and the Jews are measured out as part of God's possession. This is the time of completing God's program for the nation Israel.

The Sweet and Bitter Book GR 845

The word of God is sweet and it's bitter. We have a message of joy and salvation to proclaim. But it's proclaimed in the midst of a message that is bitter. I must begin this message with declaring to men that they are lost and without hope, they are living under the judgment of God, destined to bear the full brunt of the wrath of God. I'm amazed how much of the bitterness is emphasized. I would like to remove some of the bitterness. But we've been entrusted with a message that is both sweet and bitter and we better proclaim it as we've been given it. Whether people listen or not. The test that we will be measured by, is….. Were we faithful with the message, sweet and bitter.

I have everything God wants me to know. But God hasn't revealed everything he has in his mind. So Deuteronomy 29:29 tells us, the revealed things belong to us, the secret things belong to God. I am responsible to learn and understand what He has revealed, not what he has not revealed. And isn't that a blessing? You know, I despair of ever learning and mastering everything in this one book. Would it have been an added blessing if this was one volume of 100? I have my hands full! I can't master this one! If this was only volume 3 of 100 volumes, what good would it do me? And remember John said, if he had written everything that Christ had said and done while He was on earth, the world couldn't contain the books. So God has graciously limited His revelation. So that you and I might devote our lives to mastering as much of this one book as we can under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

As we come to the 6th trumpet, a mighty mighty force of demonic beings is released to attack the world and the people of the world. But this force of demons, rather than inflicting pain, will bring death, and greater numbers of people are going to die than the world has ever seen before. What we have during this 7 year period is an outbreak, if you will, of demonic power and a display of the forces of Satan. God is responding to the cry of his people for vengeance, for justice, for deliverance. And these judgements are a response. God is going to vindicate his people. He's bringing judgement on sin, and this will continue to build until it climaxes with the return of Christ at Armageddon, and judgement on the peoples of the earth.

We're going to be dealing now with demonic beings who are not free to roam the earth today, who are not involved in the deception of people today. But because of the fierceness of their activity, they are bound by God and will not be released to impact men and women until the fifth trumpet sounds. The first of these woe judgments, the fifth trumpet, will result in the loosing of a great force of demons from the abyss, and they will be given authority and power to inflict the human race with overwhelming pain. Pain that is so severe and so great that people will long and earnestly seek for death, but God will not allow them to die. These demons will not be permitted to kill anyone. Part of the suffering of this judgment is pain without death.

Judgments Parallel the Plagues GR841

We are focusing our attention on the future display of God's wrath that will take place on this earth, that 7 year tribulation, to be preceded by the removal of all true believers from the earth. During this time, God will not only be pouring out His wrath upon sinful men, he will also be preparing the nation Israel to repent of their sin and turn to Jesus as their Messiah. As we move through the 7-year period that we call the tribulation, that will climax with the return of Christ to earth in Revelation 19, the judgements that God pours out become progressively more severe. Portions of the earth experience the display of His wrath, but He doesn't destroy all the earth at once. And with each judgement that is poured out, men and women are confronted with the reality of the wrath of God against sin, and thus given opportunity to repent of their sin. Cast themselves upon the mercy of God and believe in His son, Jesus Christ, who died for them.

Prayers are Kept for Judgment GR 840

The prayers of the saints are brought before God at the appointed time. The person and work of Christ enabled these to come. But he uses heavenly beings to convey them before the throne. This doesn't mean that you pray to saints or to angels. It means that the one who is our representative at the right hand of the Father, who ever lives to make intercession for us, according to Hebrews 7:25, ordains the time. Remember, He opened the seventh seal. And in His time, under His provision, the prayers of the saints are brought before the Father. In Revelation chapter 8, the solemn God of judgement is displaying His judgment on the earth. Are we describing nuclear warfare. I tend to think no. Because the point of the judgements of the seven year tribulation is that everyone will understand, this is a direct action of God.

In the seventh chapter of Revelation, we are given a glimpse into the salvation that will occur, in this seventieth week of Daniel; and particularly as we anticipate the last three and a half years. It is revealed that there will be a number of Jews saved, and preserved by God to physically survive the tribulation. They will not necessarily be the only Jews saved who survive the tribulation, but as we move through Revelation we'll see that these 12,000 from each tribe, are specifically marked out for special preservation by God. Now as we contemplate the last part of Revelation chapter 7, our attention is drawn specifically to matters relating to life after death. The single most important issue for a person to face in life, is where will you spend eternity. The bible is clear, there is life after death. Everyone, will be alive following their physical death, in a place of suffering, or in a place of blessing and joy.

If people in the Arab world, Israel, Africa, Asia, or the United States are going to be saved, it's going to be through the gracious provision of God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Salvation is God's work, completely and fully. That's why it's effective. Why do I struggle with that? Well I was baptized. I take the sacraments. I belong to this church. I do good. Put it all on the rubbish heap. Salvation is the work of God. There is no place for self of any kind. Self image, self esteem, self worth. All the praise and glory for salvation belongs to God alone. How you see me doesn't matter. How I see you doesn't matter. How God sees us makes an eternal difference. And He says we are all filthy and defiled by sin. We love the song, I Did It My Way, but keep in mind there is a way that seems right but the end is death. Nothing else will make a difference for time and eternity in a sinners life except except the gospel for Christ.

In order to understand biblical events that are going to be transpiring in the future in this world you must understand the central role that the nation Israel plays in the plan of God. Israel is the nation that God has chosen for Himself. In effect, all of God's plans for this world, including His coming earthly kingdom, revolve around the nation Israel. So if you're confused on the nation Israel and the part that Israel plays in God's future plans, you will have misunderstandings in a variety of areas of Biblical prophecy. Anytime the Bible talks about Israel it is talking about the physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In reality the events that we are studying in Revelation are the realization of the promises given in the Abrahamic Covenant. Now what will be taking place in the book of Revelation are events that will refine and purify the nation Israel so that God can bring about the full completion of the promises he gave to the nation.

Revelation puts the course and events of the worlds history in proper perspective. We are reminded that we as believers in Jesus Christ are living out of step with the world. Recognizing that is the biblical position that God has placed us in, should help keep us from getting too discouraged. The child of God and the one who is not the child of God have two different orientations and two different perspectives on the events of the world. The hopes of the world center around the expectation that things are going to improve and going to get better. There is the conviction and belief that with the proper decisions, the right political maneuverings, we can bring peace, unity, oneness to our society and even to our world in these days. the reality of the matter is God has already told us what the future is. And it's very, very bleak. The fact of the matter is, the Bible says we are moving toward a time of complete chaos in the world. We are moving toward a time of war and conflict.

The Cry of Martyrs GR 835

Many commentators believe that the majority of those who do become believers in the tribulation will be martyred for their faith. So we're going to talk about those who have come to salvation after the rapture of the church. The Holy Spirit will still be at work. Through His ministry, as it was carried out in the Old Testament, all those who were ever saved, were saved as a result of the sovereign drawing ministry of the Holy Spirit by the grace of God. We read in verse 9 of chapter 6, "And when He broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained." We ought to also note that this seal is not judgment upon believers because all the judgments of the tribulation are directed toward the unbeliever, those who are identified as those who dwell upon the earth. Those who belong to this world, who are united in their opposition against God.

Four Horsemen Begin the Tribulation GR 834

The four living creatures surround the throne of God, one on each side. They're cherubim. Their function is to guard the throne of God, to lead the host of heaven in the worship of God, and to see that the plan of God for His creation is implemented on the earth. So the first four judgements of the tribulation, come at the call of one of these living creatures. The call to come forth, is a call not to John, not to Christ, but it's a call to the rider on the horse. It's a call for the judgement now to come out upon the earth. The judgements that come in this tribulation, proceed from the throne of God. They're contained in the scroll that was handed from the Father on the throne. Keep in mind, that God is in control. It's His purpose and His plan, that is being carried out. It will be of utmost importance for those who become His children in the tribulation to sustain themselves with that comforting hope. They need not be afraid, God's on the throne.

We live in a world that characterized by misery and suffering. All you have to do is turn on the news and see that there is turmoil, there is wretched heartache afflicting many, many people in many places. Many of you experience the burden of having loved ones going through very difficult times and trials. We're constantly reminded that there is suffering, there is sorrow, there is difficulty associated with this life. And it's easy in that context to loose sight of the fact that God's intention for His creation is glory. And that purpose will be realized. And everything is put into perspective for us if we draw back and see life from God's perspective. Pain, difficulty, suffering, heartache, but all in the context that God destines His creation for glory and the throne room scene of Revelations chapters 4 and 5 brings that into perspective.

One of the most sobering thoughts for us today is the consideration that we may be living on the brink of the climax of human history as we know it. And the purposes of God in bringing an end to earthly kingdoms and earthly empires, and establishing the rule of His Son over all the earth may be at hand. That is a sobering thought that ought to condition us in our thinking. It ought to shape all of our plans and goals that we may be on the verge of the unfolding of the conclusion of God's plan for His creation. All things will be brought to a conclusion and Jesus Christ will rule and reign over all the earth.

Man's misery, his frustration, the futility of his life is all an evidence of the work of sin. And the misery of this life is simply an anticipation of the wretched condition that sinful man will experience in an eternal hell. Now it is through the work of Christ that the purposes and plans of God in redeeming His creation will be accomplished. And it is not possible in any way to understand the course of human events, it is not possible to understand what is taking place in our world without an understanding of the purpose of Jesus Christ. As we continue Revelation 5 our attention will be turned from the One who is sitting on throne, God the Father, to the One who has provided redemption by His death, the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. So the focal point or the focal person of chapter 5 of Revelation is Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

I believe it is biblically true that you and I are privileged to worship the living God because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ every day in any place. But I also believe that the Scripture would indicate that the focal point of our worship, is when we come to worship Him corporately as the people of God and to join in praise of our God. The center of our week and lives, should be when we come together as the people of God in the presence of God to corporately as God's redeemed creation offer to Him the worship that is due Him alone.

The Beings in the Throne Room GR 829

Many people are uncomfortable talking about God's wrath and coming judgment. They do not like to think of God being angry, of God having vengeance, of God pouring out wrath and destroying people. Their concept of God, fits more of a grandfatherly type that is very understanding, warm, and indulgent. But that's not the picture the Scripture paints of God, He is a God of absolute holiness, of perfection and justice, and a God who will mete out judgment. The picture of God sitting on the throne in heaven is a reminder that earthly rulers come and go. Almighty God sits on the throne - that does not change. That's a great comfort to us as His children. Things are never out of control. God never leaves the throne. Who will be the next president of this country? The man of God's appointment. Who will be the next president of France? The man of God's appointment. Who will end up ruling the remnants of the Soviet Union? The man of God's appointment.

There are many portions of the word of God that are particularly striking, and in many ways, overwhelming. The Bible itself, when you consider, it is the revelation of the living God to man. There are certain passages that stand out in a unique way, and Revelation, Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 is one of those passages. There's a sense of awe as we are going to be privileged to contemplate something of the very presence of God in glory. To see something of the worship that takes place in glory, in heaven itself, which is to be, if you will, a model and pattern for us in our worship. Now man is innately aware of his need for God. We are inertly religious because we were created by God for a relationship with Himself. So all people, everywhere, have some form of worship, some concepts of God. The problem is, because of sin, man has rejected the true and living God and proceeded to construct and create a God that he is comfortable with, which is really an extension of himself.

I just want to say a few words about the condition of our bodies following the rapture of the church before we look into the matter of coming judgment. And the judgment that we must anticipate even as the people of God. Jesus Christ was crucified, was buried, and was raised from the dead. His resurrection from the dead is the proof and evidence that everyone ultimately is destined for resurrection. Now this is true for unbelievers as well as believers. Even the unbeliever will receive a resurrection body. Not a body suited for glory, but a body suited for suffering and punishment. So at the resurrection and rapture of the church, we will have bodies that are changed to be conformed to the body that Jesus had following His resurrection and ascension.

I want to talk about the subject of prophecy and particularly having to do with the rapture of the church and God's promises to us as His children. This is the anticipation, the hope, the expectation of the church of Jesus Christ. That we will some day be caught up from this earth, meet Jesus Christ in the air, be taken to glory with Him, introduced to His Father personally, presented in His presence as holy and blameless and without spot. Then we will return with Christ at a later date to this earth when He comes and establishes His kingdom over which He will personally rule and reign. We talk about the millennium; we're talking about the literal, physical earthly kingdom of Jesus Christ, 1,000 years in duration. Now you can be a pre-millennialist, a post-millennialist, or an a-millennialist. We are pre-millennialists.

I want to review with you today what God says about the nation Israel, it's place in God's program; what God says about the church and the place of the church in His program. Everything in the Bible revolves around God's dealings with two groups of people: the nation Israel and the church. The only exception is the first 11 chapters of Genesis. It's necessary for us to understand this because we as believers bemoan the fact that the world is divided and you have different nations, different languages, different races and we say we all ought to be able to get together. It is not God's plan and purpose that we all get together. It is not His plan and intention that there be one world unified until Jesus Christ comes to rule that world. And that is why you have the on-going conflict between the nations, between the races, between the peoples of the world.

I am reading from an Article titled: Many Boomers Still Find Church Irrelevant. This is from a survey done in the Presbyterian Church but the researchers believe that the results there would be true of other liberal, Protestant denominations as well. Many in the baby boomer generation are ndifferent to churches that do not stand out from the surrounding culture. It's reflective of a kind of relativism. This is what I believe, but everybody has their own beliefs and that's fine as long as you don't impose them upon anyone else. But the church faces a more daunting task in the long run and that is to develop a theology that is compelling enough to persuade people to belong but open enough to meet the non-dogmatic demands of modern culture. One person says

They don't know their true condition. When you come to believe in Christ you receive from Him spiritual sight to know and understand spiritual truth and spiritual reality. The gold, the faith and the riches and wealth of God, the garment of salvation, His righteousness, the ability to see and understand and know spiritual truth and spiritual reality can be purchased only from Christ and there is no cost. But you know the barrier. People today are like the people at Laodicea. We have need of nothing.

Our study of the seven churches of Revelation of chapter 2 and chapter 3 brings us to the church at Laodicea. Laodicea has become infamous because it is the church that is without commendation. It reflects in a complete and full way a commitment to fitting in to the world system. It's the called the lukewarm church by Christ. We find at Laodicea there are no doctrinal issues addressed by Christ. No major heresies have to be rebuked. There are no moral indecencies being practiced as there are in some of the other churches. It would have been an

In Revelation chapter 3 we have the messages that Jesus Christ sent to the seven churches in Asia Minor. These were sent toward the end of the first century, about 95 A.D. when John would have recorded these letters as part of the revelation that he received from Jesus Christ. These churches represent not only seven literal historical churches of the time but they portray all of the church that will exist down through history including the churches that are present today in the world. The church at Sardis reflects much of what is accepted as the evangelical church today in the western world. It is a church that has a reputation for spiritual life but it is a church that in God's evaluation is said to be spiritually dead. The church by nature is a group of God's people who have been called out from the world so they do not fit any longer. Attempts to make the church to fit into the world, destroy the church as God intended it to be.

In the New Testament the church is presented as the bride of Christ. And as the bride of Christ, the church is to maintain its purity and single-minded devotion to Christ in anticipation of the time when we shall be joined together in marriage to Him. Understanding that as what God pictures us as His people to be, and noting that His purpose is that we be a people devoted to Him in purity, we can understand that the program and plan of Satan will be to violate the bride, to corrupt her, to mar her purity and devotion to Christ and thus detract from the clarity and beauty of her testimony.

We read the Old Testament and wonder how could Israel allow itself to come under the spell of Jezebel? But here we come to the church at Thyatira and wonder how did the church of Jesus Christ allow itself to come under the spell of another Jezebel? One who taught, claiming it was from God. We're talking about true believers here, and turning them away from faithfulness to God. Leading them into immorality and into idolatry. Same thing that Jezebel had done. The end result was they were involved in immorality and the worship of idols. That's why we as believers have to be totally, absolutely intolerant of teaching and doctrine and people who teach contrary to the word of God. We think, oh I wouldn't be deceived. I wouldn't be deluded. Well the church at Thyatira was a pretty good church from what was said in verse 19. But it was tolerating the woman Jezebel.

Sometimes we as believers become discouraged and even fearful because of the condition of the world around us. And one thing we're reminded of as we work through the messages to the churches, and that is that the church has always lived in pressure conditions. We sometimes think that wow, with the spread of secular humanism and new age thinking, our society is deteriorating in ways that it never has before. But as I study the letters to the churches, I'm reminded that things weren't so good in the good old days. . That Satan, the world and sin have not changed. Sometimes the strategies are adjusted, but basically the church has been called to be a light in the midst of darkness. That's why these churches are represented as lampstands. We are giving forth the light of the knowledge of Jesus Christ in a world that lives in the darkness of sin, in the depravity that characterizes a sinful people.

One of the most difficult things for believers, to accept is the place of suffering and trial in our lives. There is a part of me, even as a believer, that would like to believe that since I have trusted Jesus Christ as my Savior, if I'm walking faithfully before Him, He will protect me and keep me from trial and difficulty. And often the first question that comes to mind when there is affliction brought into my life is, Lord why has this happened, Lord have I not been faithful to you, why would you permit this to come into my life? We really want to hear and would really like to believe that when we trust Jesus Christ as our Savior, all of our problems are resolved and dissolved, that God does want me happy and healthy, to enjoy life to the fullest, that He does not want me to have pain and suffering and misery. In fact, the Scripture tells me that suffering, trial, persecution is all part of God's plan to mold and shape and prepare me for the glory of His presence.

I want to look at the historical setting of the church in the city at Ephesus, because sometimes we lose sight of what the actual situation was in which our Bible was written. And with that kind of thinking, come to think of our day as totally unique and distinct. We've got problems that others didn't face, the moral deterioration and degradation of our society is greater than has been experienced in other times. I was impressed with the situation that the church at Ephesus had to deal with. It was a major religious center for the world of that day. Let me read you what one writer says in summary: Into Ephesus there poured a stream of criminals of every kind, fugitives from the law. The character of the people of Ephesus was notoriously bad. The people had the reputation all over Asia of being fickle, superstitious and immoral. We don't have anything to compare with what the church at Ephesus had to face.

Now the process God uses for refining us as His children is trial and suffering and difficulty. We are not yet perfect in our walk, but He is at work in refining and molding and shaping us. He brings judgment to our lives that sin might be dealt with. And if we as believers have to go through trial and difficulty and suffering, think what awaits the unbeliever, the godless sinner, who has not experienced redemption.

You start with Jesus Christ, you start with who He is, you start with the magnificence of His person. Now we see Him operate to bring all history to a climax, to bring all creation to its knees before Him in preparation for His taking control, absolutely, of every detail of every aspect of His creation. Now note this,"'I, the Lord, am the first, and with the last, I am He,'" or I am. See the two, names put together here, the two concepts. I am the first and with the last, I am. I am the eternal God.

Our Worship: Real or Romantic GR 811

One of the things that has impressed my heart about the book of the Revelation, was the constant emphasis on the greatness of God and His exultation in worship. Now our concept of God is a controlling factor in the way that we live, the way we conduct our lives, and particularly in the way that we do worship God. The world has a concept of God that is not related to reality. They have created an idea of what God is like from their own minds. They think of God as some warm, cuddly, grandfatherly kind of person. A little bit of the snugly, teddy bear kind of idea, where He just loves me, and He's warm and so on. But a heresy is a portion of truth that is taken and blown out of proportion. And we have created a heresy by developing a concept of God that is devoid of the balance that the Scripture gives. He is a god of love, He is a god of graciousness, but He is a god of judgment, He is a guard, god of harshness, He's a god of holiness.

Many people have failed to consider how important it is that we have some recognition of the goal towards which we are moving. Without some understanding of the climax, the end, the purpose toward which we are moving; life is empty and meaningless. If you don't know where you're going, the trip doesn't have any meaning. . If there is no real goal toward which we're moving with our lives, no ultimate climax and end that has purpose and meaning, then there is no answer to the question, why? There's no basis for morality or any concept of personal sacrifice. Why should I be good? Why should I forego the pleasures of the moment? Why should I not do all that I can to please myself? We have destroyed our young people by trying to build up their lives apart from any concept of a living God who will call them into account someday for every deed that they do. This is the basis that the Scripture itself gives for controlling conduct and behavior.

Our God: Who is, Was, and is to Come GR 809

We're in the early part of this study. The book of Revelation is saturated with references and illusions to the Old Testament. Some commentators estimate that there are 400 or more references to Old Testament passages in the book of Revelation. That's one of the reasons that we have such difficulty understanding it. We are not as saturated with the Old Testament as we, should be. Our study today will require us to be looking at a number of passages. And at times it may seem like it gets overwhelming, but be encouraged. There is quite a bit of repetition as we move through the book, and so you'll find that your understanding is building. Because some things that come for the first time, you'll find are repeated again and again. So they'll become fixed in our minds as we move through the book. You'll find as we move through the book, it begins to fit together in your mind, and its understandable and not so difficult.

We need to understand the importance of the book of Revelation and its impact upon our lives. In effect, we have the revelation from God, the Bible, bracketed with the book of Genesis marking the beginning of all things and the book of Revelation marking the end of all things. And if you did not have both the book of Genesis and the book of Revelation, it would be very difficult to make sense out of all that fits in between. We see in the unfolding of man's sin and its terrible consequences through the Scripture, God has a sovereign program of redeeming grace which focuses in the nation Israel and in the church which He has called into being. Now its important to remember, that God's plan of redemption includes the restoration of the creation to the glory that God prepared for it when He initially brought it into existence in Genesis, Chapters 1 and 2. This includes the restoration of mankind to the position of authority over all creation.
