Early English Non-Conformity

Nonconformity has played an important part in English religious life since the Reformation. The purpose of this course is to trace this development before it experienced the impact of the Great Awakening. This period has sometimes been described as the period of Old Dissent, characterized by a high view of the Church, its ministry and corporate life. Nonconformity came into existence as a movement committed to the purity of the church with freedom from political control. Its freedom is lived out under the headship of Jesus Christ. Loyalty to Jesus Christ entailed a loyalty to His cause and the maintenance of Biblical orthodoxy in the face of challenges.

Theology of John Owen (1st lecture)

“I owe more, I think, to John Owen than to any other theologian, ancient or modern” J. I. Packer. John Owen (1616-1683) was perhaps the weightiest of the Puritan theologians, often mentioned in the same breath as John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards as one of three greatest reformed theologians of all time. Remarkable though it is that he lived through the period of the Westminster Assembly without ever having been asked to take part in it, Owen nevertheless towers over this period, rising to the post of Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. His thoughts are massive, even intimidating; but a closer reflection reveals a man absorbed by the demands of piety and Christ-likeness, a truly humble man who could say “I hold myself bound in conscience and in honour, not even to imagine that I have attained a proper knowledge of any one article of truth, much less to publish it, unless through the Holy Spirit I have had such a taste of it, in its spiritual sense, that I may be able, from the heart, to say with the psalmist, ‘I have believed, and therefore have I spoken'.” The course will focus on those aspects of his theology which relate immediately to concerns of spiritual piety, including Owen's view of the Christian life and the demands of mortification. Initially lectures on Owenian theology will be given in order to introduce the student to the finer points of Owenian/Puritan theology and distinctives. You can purchase all of this course's lectures at the above link.

Poimenics (1st lecture)

This course aims to equip the student to understand and practice the coherence of poimenics (the art of shepherding the flock of God) and homiletics (the art of preaching to the flock of God). Poimenics is the discipline of study that treats of the pastoral contact between minister (and other office bearers) and church members. Practically speaking, this discipline usually confines itself to the personal contact between minister and members (visitation, counseling, coaching, etc.). However, Scripture shows how the framework of ministerial work is one of poimenics, or shepherding (e.g. 1 Pet 5:1-5). Since, the chief work of a shepherd is preaching, it may be asked to what extent preaching can and should intersect with poimenics. This course argues the coherence of preaching and shepherding, the primacy of preaching in shepherding, and the concretization of preaching in shepherding. These lectures can be purchased at the above link.

This course defines and explains both the discriminatory and applicatory dimensions of Reformed experiential preaching. Examines how major Reformers, English Puritans, Dutch Second Reformation divines, and two great preachers from each of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries emphasized the experiential dimension of vital Christianity in their sermons, then addresses the question: How can Reformed ministers best preach experientially today? This course is available in audio (mp3) and video format. You can purchase this course at the above link.

The course deals with the doctrine of the Covenant, maintaining that all God's dealings with men may be subsumed under the concept of covenant. This is the focus of the whole of the Bible, and evidence will be given for the Pre-Fall covenant with Adam – the Covenant of Works, and the Post-Fall revelation of the covenant transacted from eternity with the Son, constituted the last Adam – the Covenant of Grace. It is the revelation of this latter covenant (redeeming and gracious) which fills the pages of Holy Scripture and, in the Old Testament, it is made known, not only by promises, ordinances and prophecies, but also by the various historical and typical covenants which God was pleased to make with various men.
This course is a study of various methods appropriate to the church's ministry to youth. Rev. Mark Kelderman is an Instructor in Pastoral Theology, teaching a course on Youth Ministry at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. Every since the Lord saved him, he has had a intense desire to reach out to the youth of our generation. After involvement as a young person in his own church's youth group, he went on to college to become a teacher. For nine years he taught young people in high school science and math, but more importantly he sought to be an influence in their lives. After helping plant a church in Hull, Iowa, he attended PRTS. Upon graduation he accepted a call to serve as the pastor of the Heritage Reformed Church in Burgessville, Ontario. Over the past ten years he has established there a significant youth program which included the formation of various groups as well a retreat. He also writes a regular column for teens in the Banner of Sovereign Grace Truth. You can purchase all the lectures of this course at the above link.
