The Family | An Enduring Marriage

## Marriage Tested Through Trials The marriage of Abraham and Sarah stands as Scripture's most comprehensive portrayal of a godly family weathering both triumph and failure together. Through their lives, we witness their journey spanning over sixty years, revealing how **God's covenant faithfulness sustains families even when human weakness threatens to destroy them**. From the moment God called Abraham to "*Get thee out of thy country*" (**Genesis 12:1**), Sarah willingly "*took Sarai his wife*" and "*went forth to go into the land of Canaan*" (**Genesis 12:5**). This initial act of obedience demonstrates their **united submission to God's will**, establishing the foundation for their lifelong partnership.

The Family | Raising Godly Sons

Within the pages of **Proverbs** lies one of Scripture's most comprehensive manuals for fathers who desire to train their sons in godliness. **Twenty-three times across the book**, Solomon addresses his instruction directly to "*my son,*" creating a blueprint for family instruction that transcends generations. These passages form a complete curriculum for godly manhood, structured around the fundamental principle that "*the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge*" (**Proverbs 1:7**). The Church today stands at a crucial juncture, where the breakdown of biblical family structures has produced generations of men who lack godly fathers and sons who despise instruction. The book of **Proverbs** provide families with the framework needed to restore godly sons to their homes.

The Family | A Godly Woman's Desire

The Transitional Period of Israel's History First Samuel chapter 1 unfolds during a pivotal moment in Israel's spiritual history. The narrative opens at the close of the period of the judges, approximately 1120 BC, as the nation stood on the threshold of the monarchical era. This was a time when "the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision" (1 Samuel 3:1), indicating a period of spiritual decline and limited divine revelation. The book of 1 Samuel, attributed to the prophet Samuel himself for the early chapters, serves as an inspired historical record of God's dealings through ordinary individuals who trusted in His providence. The Setting: Shiloh as Israel's Worship Center The events of chapter 1 center around Shiloh, located approximately twenty miles north of Jerusalem in the hill country of Ephraim. This sacred site served as Israel's primary center of worship during the period of the judges, where the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant resided. Here the Israelites gathered for LORD of hosts. At Shiloh, Eli served as high priest, though his corrupt sons Hophni and Phinehas had brought disgrace upon the priesthood through their wickedness. This spiritual decline at the very center of Israel's worship reflects the broader apostasy that characterized the period of the judges. The Principal Characters The narrative introduces us to Elkanah, a godly Levite from Ramathaimzophim (also called Ramah) in the hill country of Ephraim. Though described as an "Ephrathite," possibly indicating his residence rather than tribal origin, Elkanah faithfully maintained his religious obligations by traveling annually to Shiloh for worship and sacrifice

Rather than overwhelming complexity, the passage presents a clear model of biblical femininity centered on the fear of the Lord.

The Family | Biblical Hope For The Struggling Family

Today I want to address something that touches many families in our church and community—the reality of depression and discouragement that can settle like a heavy cloud over our homes. Perhaps you've walked through seasons where life-giving activities no longer bring joy, where the darkness seems to linger despite your prayers, or where a family member struggles with burdens that seem too heavy to bear. We live in a day when mental health is increasingly discussed, and rightly so. Yet as believers, we must be careful not to abandon the sufficiency of Scripture in addressing these deep needs of the soul. While we acknowledge that medication may sometimes be necessary, of course we assume you tried God's way first, and never forget that God's Word provides the ultimate hope and healing for the troubled heart. Our text today comes from **Lamentations 3:21-26**, where we find the prophet **Jeremiah** at his lowest point, yet discovering the pathway from despair to hope. This passage shows us that even in our darkest family struggles, God's mercies are new every morning, and His faithfulness endures forever.

The Family | Gods Remedy For The Discouraged

Just twenty-four hours—that is all that separates the blazing triumph of Mount Carmel from the broken prophet beneath the juniper tree. In the space of one sun's rising and setting, the man who called down fire from heaven now prays for fire to consume his own soul. This staggering reversal teaches us that **spiritual victory does not inoculate against spiritual defeat**, and that the strongest servants of the Most High are still flesh and blood, subject to the frailties that flesh inherits. The immediate context places us squarely within the Law and the Prophets. Israel under Ahab's wicked reign had **forsaken the covenant** (**v. 10**), **thrown down God's altars** (**v. 10**), and **killed His prophets** (**v. 14**). The Mosaic economy was in full force, with its external sacrifices, national identity, and earthly promises. Yet even under this wicked arrangement, God's grace toward His discouraged servant shines forth, prefiguring the greater grace that would come through Christ. This narrative provides **a timeless blueprint for households battling the crushing weight of discouragement**. Every family will face seasons when hope seems buried beneath circumstances, when the faithful feel forgotten, and when yesterday's victories feel like distant memories. In Elijah's journey from despair to restoration, we discover God's methodology for lifting fallen spirits and renewing weary hearts.

The Family | The Crisis of Fatherhood

This nation stands at a crossroads. While we boast of being founded by godly men who feared the Lord, we now face an unprecedented crisis that threatens the very fabric of our society and churches. The statistics are staggering: **18.3 million children in America live without their biological father in the home**. This represents nearly **one in four children** growing up in father-absent households. The United States has achieved the dubious distinction of having **the highest rate of single-parent households of any nation in the world**. What was once 11% of children living in father-absent homes in 1960 has now **tripled to 25%**. This is not a social trend—it is a spiritual and societal catastrophe that demands our immediate attention.

The Family | Strong Biblical Men vs Weak Modern Men

God's design for masculinity stands in stark contrast to the weak, feminized culture of our generation. Where the Scriptures call for sober-minded strength under godly authority, modern culture produces men who are passive, undisciplined, and spiritually infantile. Paul's instructions to young men in **Titus 2:6-8** provide the blueprint for godly manhood that our families and churches desperately need. We witness today a systematic assault on biblical masculinity through cultural forces that either emasculate men entirely or promote a toxic counterfeit that mistakes brutality for strength. Both extremes miss God's pattern for men who are simultaneously strong and submissive—dangerous to evil yet devoted to good.

The Family | Building a Biblical Family Mindset

The Apostle Paul's words in **1 Corinthians chapter 4** reveal profound truths about God's design for both the natural family and the spiritual family—the church. When Paul says, "_For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ [[Jesus]] I have begotten you through the gospel_" (**1 Corinthians 4:15**), he establishes a principle that transcends religious instruction and enters into the realm of spiritual reproduction and family formation. This passage contains within it the very DNA of what constitutes a biblical family mindset—whether we speak of the family at home or the family of God. Today, we need to recover this mindset in an age where families are disintegrating and the church has lost sight of its familial nature. The family, as a metaphor, permeates the New Testament, with believers called "_brethren_" and "_sisters,_" the church described as "_the household of God_" (**1 Timothy 3:15**), and saints urged to "_do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith_" (**Galatians 6:10**).

The Family | Building Godly Families

The family is God's first and most fundamental institution, established in **Genesis** before the church, before governments, and before any human organization. "_Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it_" (**Psalm 127:1**). This foundational truth reminds us that successful, God-honoring families cannot be constructed through human wisdom alone—they require God's guidance, biblical principles, and the Lord's active involvement in every aspect of family life. The Psalmist's declaration in **Psalm 127:1** serves as our cornerstone: without God's blessing and direction, all man's effort to build anything becomes futile labor. Yet when families align themselves with God's blueprints revealed in Scripture, they become testimonies of His grace and instruments of His glory for generations.

The Family | Remove Not the Ancient Landmark

"_Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set_" finds its primary meaning in the preservation of property boundaries established under Israel's land distribution. This command, delivered through Solomon's wisdom, originates in the Law's protection of family inheritance rights and carries profound implications that extend beyond the immediate legal context to encompass spiritual and moral principles applicable to God's people throughout history. While the **literal context** of this verse addresses the physical boundary markers that separated tribal and family land allotments in ancient Israel, the **broader spiritual application** has been recognized throughout church history. The passage serves as both a historical legal directive and a timeless principle concerning the preservation of established godly boundaries in doctrine, family life, and spiritual heritage.

The Family | Biblical Marriage

The passage of **Ephesians 5:22-33** emerges from the foundational context of verse 21, where Paul commands all believers to be "_submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God_". This mutual submission among Spirit-filled believers establishes the bedrock principle that governs all Christian relationships, including the sacred institution of marriage. The entire household code that follows is predicated upon believers who are filled with the Holy Spirit, walking in joy, thankfulness, and lowliness before the Lord.
