1 Corinthians 39 Giving Plans

This series places Paul's epistles in the context of Luke's Acts so that we are able to put the whole story together of the growth of the church and the problems that plagued the church. In Galatia the problem was disfiguring the gospel. In 1 Thessalonians the problem was practical living in light of the rapture. In 2 Thessalonians the problem was false teachers proclaiming the day of the Lord had already come. In 1 Corinthians the problem was worldliness in the church. These issues plague us today. Some proclaim a false gospel of Lordship Salvation, Roman Catholic Sacramentalism, Reformed Soteriology, Addition Models like Cambellism (Church of Christ), Loss of Salvation. Some proclaim false eschatologies of Replacement Theology, Post-Trib, Mid-Trib, Pre-Wrath Rapture, Amillennialism, Postmillennialism and even Preterism. And some bring false spirituality into the church such as Spiritual Formation, Mysticism, Modern Gnosticism, Legalism, Hebrew Roots Christianity, and many others. These errors are addressed by the epistles we've studied so far and found to be wanting, wrong, poor theology, distortions of God's Holy Word. As we go into 2 Corinthians we will look at the ministry of the new covenant that changes lives, and thereby condemns ideas of ministry that use marketing gimmicks, worldly techniques, health and wealth gospel, prosperity gospel and all the others to change lives. None work! Only one book has the truth and there are those who love this book and the truth more than the rest. Are you one? Or are you caught up in the world and every wind of doctrine that comes down the pike? Love God, love His Word, love His people, and love His appearing.

1 Corinthians 38 The Translation Into a Resurrection Body

Tonight we will be studying another interesting passage of Scripture. This one regards "the last trump" as the moment the rapture will take place. There is a lot of dispute about the timing of the last trump, so we will discuss it in some detail. What a great promise that we will all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye into resurrection bodies!

Paul continues his defense of the resurrection body to the Corinthians who no longer believed in the bodily resurrection. This was essential to their spiritual well-being since we depend on Christ's resurrection for the power to enable us to live the Christian life. See the attached and see you tonight. Pray for pastors in this country to teach the word according to literal interpretation. Pray for the people in our assembly who are in need. Pray for the future of our congregation. Keep looking for the blessed hope!

1 Corinthians 36 Logical and Theological Evidence for Resurrection

I've attached the notes for 1 Corinthians 15:12-28 as well as some introductory notes on the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. I love all three of the sections we're looking at tonight. First, the gospel, which is the gospel for unbelievers and believers, there's no change as some try to claim. We need to believe it to be saved from the penalty of sin and the power of sin. Second, the logical evidence for resurrection, where Paul uses modus tollens to prove resurrection. He also shows the fallacy of making an abstract universal. Third, the theological evidence for resurrection, where Paul also uses logic, but in a theologically compelling way to show the linkage between death in Adam and life in Christ and then dovetails this with a telescopic end times description that launches us all the way forward in time to the new heaven and new earth.

1 Corinthians 35 The Gospel that Saves

Many people fail to see that the gospel saves us not only in the sense of getting us to heaven, but also saves us from the power of sin in the daily Christian life. What is the essential content of the gospel? Is it the death, burial, and resurrection? Why not include the appearances? Is it the death only? Is it the death and resurrection only? What exactly saves us? And what do each of these four things do? 1 Cor 15:1-8 is at the center of these discussions. I hope we can have a thorough discussion of the gospel tonight, and especially the significance of the death and the resurrection relative to the burial and appearances. People need to slow down and think about texts. I find it amazing how little Christians "think" about what is being said in the Bible. They just read it and say "That's what I believe," or they retort when I say "I believe something else" with a verse that they claim says otherwise. Verses have to be thought about, and that's what you do AFTER you've worked through the original languages. Everyone is not an expert (an expert would be someone who knows the original languages and has developed the skill of using the grammatical-historical-contextual hermeneutic principles in exegesis) and it is impossible to get some of the meanings of the original languages through a translation, even a serious translation because every translation is an interpretation. When an English reader interprets the Bible he is interpreting an interpretation. This is the greatest obstacle to communicating the authors intent. I have my methods of overcoming this and am more interested in you knowing why you believe what you believe than telling you what to believe.

1 Corinthians 34 Spiritual Gifts Part 3

We'll finish up "the spirituals" tonight. It's not just about gifts. The Spirit dispenses spiritual gifts. The Son gives ministries. The Father brings about the effects. As part of the body, each of us has been given a spiritual gift or gifts to use in ministries that will have various effects. Some gifts were for the foundation of the church and have ceased. Others were sign gifts to authenticate those with revelatory gifts. Others were mission critical for the infancy of the church. And some of them are growth gifts that continue as the body of Christ grows to the full stature of Jesus Christ. There are ten continuous growth gifts and you have one or more. They are vital and part of the focus of what Christ is doing at the right hand of the Father. He said "I will build my church" and He is building it in the heart of Satan's kingdom. It is a temple that serves as an indwelling of the Spirit (1 Cor. 3:16). If you're not using your gift in some ministry, you are not contributing to God's work; you're contributing to Satan's kingdom. The mystery of lawlessness is growing rapidly which paves the way for the man of lawlessness to rise to power (2 Thess 2:3,7-8). We must stand firm and not stumble into the temptations of our pagan culture. The stage is being set for the end times wrath. Thank God we are not destined for wrath but for deliverance via rapture (1 Thess 5:9). How should you be in light of God's coming judgment? Sober minded, attending to what is good, loving one another, submitting to your pastor, loving your wife, respecting your husband, training your children. We are children of light, not darkness. Store up your treasure where it counts.

I think we made it up to the gift of miracles last week so we'll start there. I've changed the categories I used to hold from foundational, sign, and development gifts to completed foundational, completed sign, completed mission-critical and growth gifts. It just works better with the biblical data. These are all very interesting, and of course, you know how important it is to be using your gift(s) for the proper function of the body of Christ. They are a major issue (but love is greater still!). One of the things that stuck out to me is that sometimes we get annoyed by other believers because we don't have their spiritual gift. For example, some believers have the gift of mercy. This means they have pity for the suffering others are facing and actually enter into their suffering and put up with them in it. Others look at the same suffering situation and say "That person brought it on themselves." We don't always understand one another, and both may be right in this case. Another thing that stuck out is that the spiritual gifts all reflect something in God Himself. For example, the gift of helps reflects that God is our helper. But look, He's using those with the gift to help us. So, He often works indirectly rather than directly. Lots to glean and think about as we study the spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 32 Spiritual Gifts Part 1

What I'd like to do is be able to take us all back to the 1st century and embed us in a local church service in a house church, say at Corinth. That's my goal in studying these spiritual gifts this time through. I've got a document I've attached and we probably will not make it through all of it, but I hope that it is fun and I hope that we cover a lot of interesting territory. I hope it's especially a benefit to all of us to be exposed to His wonderful word. It changes lives. I hear stories almost every day of people's lives being changed by Him. Your life, my life, all of our lives have forever been changed by the providential work of God through His word and through our circumstances. I hope you join us tonight. Don't forget prayer! Prayer is the theme this year. I'm taking everything to Him in prayer and trusting Him for the results. This is a conscious act of dependence each time we take something to Him in prayer rather than try to figure it out ourselves. Even the 'small' things in life. If you are tired of trying to do things yourself, why not in humility cast your cares on Him because He cares for you. Stop wearing yourself out and throw your worries upon the One who never wears out.

For the first time some of you will understand the purpose of tongues, why they were given and why they ceased in the 1st century. This is such an area of confusion, but it doesn't have to be. Tongues are not a sign of blessing or maturity. They are a sign of judgment. This is very clear from the way Paul uses Isa 28:11-12 in this passage. Further, we will see that tongues were not uncontrollable ecstatic utterances. The speaker was in full control and could keep his mouth shut. All this and more...

Tonight we will talk about "The Perfect." This is a hotly debated passage. I want to make it understandable to the best of my ability. I've attached some updated notes with some discussion points at the end. Have some spiritual gifts ceased? Or do all spiritual gifts continue? The different views have repercussions. The main point is to understand the issues and adopt the strongest view.

1 Corinthians 28 The Greatest of These is Love

Tonight we will study the "love" chapter. In doing so we will also look at "the perfect." When are the spiritual gifts of prophecy and knowledge done away with? When do tongues cease? Important chapter. Highly theological. Great on love as the proper context for use of spiritual gifts in the assembly. Get this right and use of your gift won't be annoying to others. Get it wrong and you'll be nothing but a clanging cymbal banging chaotically in the background. They were crazy about tongues speaking. We'll get more into his correction on tongues in chapter 14. But this issue has to be settled first. It's really a chapter that's answering why love is greater than the revelatory spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 26 "The Spirituals"

Tonight we are going to enter into Paul's instruction concerning "the spirituals." This is an odd phrase he uses which is usually translated "spiritual gifts." I'm not sure that is correct, but certainly Paul does focus on spiritual gifts in the next three chapters. So, we'll look at this phrase "the spirituals" and really start to try to hammer down the background of these interesting chapters that are so hotly debated in the cessationist vs non-cessationist understanding of spiritual gifts.

Tonight we'll go through the controversial head-coverings passage. Men and women have instructions here. It's a really dicey text due to a series of difficulties in the original language. What does the word translated "head" refer too: authority? source? representative? How should the word translated "man" be translated: man? husband? What is the nature of the head-covering: material cloth? veil? hair? What is the mention of long hair not befitting a man mean: long hair is wrong (how long is wrong)? or effeminate, coiffured hair? Does the Bible weigh in on gender? How many genders are there? What is the main point of the passage?

1 Corinthians 23 The Inconsistency of Dining in Idol Temples and Taking the Lord’s Su

Tonight we'll finish the lengthy section on knowledge, freedom, and eating food sacrificed to idols. There is freedom, but sometimes we are supposed to sacrifice our freedom for the gospel and for spiritual growth of others. There are some good words about the Lord's Supper here as well as a good conclusion. I think this section on freedom and limiting our expression of freedom because of other truths that temper them continues into the next section on head coverings, which I and most students of 1 Corinthians consider the most difficult passage in the letter.

1 Corinthians 22 The Example of Israel in the Wilderness

Tonight Paul takes us back to the OT example of Israel in the wilderness. This generation had every provision for victory, but they failed and wandered around for 40 years until everyone over 20 died, except Joshua and Caleb. God was not pleased with them. He wasn't pleased with the Corinthians either! When believers have every advantage of His enabling grace and they decide they are going to walk on the precipice of evil with the arrogance that they won't fall over the cliff into idolatry they are walking right into God's discipline. He won't be mocked.

1 Corinthians 21 How to Win Rewards

Tonight we'll discuss 'how to win rewards.' It's very interesting to look at the different crowns and how these crowns relate to ruling function in the coming kingdom. Paul wanted every believer to train hard to win crowns. You're not competing against anyone else, but you are competing against the world, your flesh, and the devil. This is a spiritual battle that is being waged in the heavenlies. Are you entering the fight? Are you putting your armor on? There is a great temptation to be selfish all the time. That's why you have to train like an athlete to exercise self-discipline and sacrifice some of your rights for the sake of others. This is how to run the race so as to win eternal reward.

1 Corinthians 20 Sacrificing Your Rights for the Gospel

This week we'll continue Paul's discussion of sacrificing our freedoms/rights/privileges for the sake of others. In this chapter Paul uses himself as an illustration and shows that even though he's an apostle with special rights, he set aside some of those rights for the sake of the gospel. One of the things we have to train ourselves to do is not to abuse our rights. As Christians we all have rights, but that doesn't mean we should exercise them. It is wisdom to know when to exercise them and when to forfeit them. It takes training to forfeit one's rights for the sake of others, but this is part of operating like Christ operated. He too had all the rights of divinity and He gave up those rights to die for us. Think about that for a moment. Let that sink in. The agent of all creation and heir of the universe gave up His rights for us! How much more should we give up our rights for others? This is a take, take, get out of my way world, and yet the Christian life is exactly the opposite. It's a give, give, serve others world, and there is great reward to follow. Reward that lasts forever, while the rest who remain in unbelief will be in weeping and gnashing of teeth, cast in outer darkness in the lake of fire forever. Tis but a short time till our blessed hope returns for us.

1 Corinthians 18 Paul's Argument from Behavior to Theology

Tonight we're backing away from the details so we can see how Paul thought (under inspiration) and made his argument. When he saw a sinful behavior he always traced it to a theological issue. This connection is very important to catch. Our sinful behaviors can always be traced back to theological errors, misconceptions, failures to truly understand, and perhaps other related concepts. This is why it is SO important to be in the word. It is the word that is the power of God that brings about His purposes in our lives. If it is not in us then we will sin. That is the way it is. His word goes forth to accomplish His purposes, but it has to be in our lives or nothing will change, nothing will happen, except sin, sin, sin...See the Corinthians...

Tonight we'll look at Paul's preference for singleness, and why. There are three phrases that have to be interpreted. The present distress, the time is short, and one other. It's interesting to get Paul's outlook on life due to various distresses and the any-moment-rapture. It literally should change the way we live and the decisions we make. Nevertheless, it's not wrong to marry, and most people do marry for a variety of proper reasons. Paul just preferred singleness for it's ministry advantages. See you tonight! Prayer after!

It's interesting how Paul addressed the marital situations at Corinth. Some of them were trending toward asceticism in light of the blatant sexual immorality in their midst. As a result they wanted to abstain from sex, get divorced, and leave their unbelieving spouses in order to be more holy. Paul says all that isn't going to make you more holy. Just obey the commandments of God. It is that simple. You don't have to do anything else like deprive the body or light candles or do yoga to be more spiritual. All of those are simply self-help programs designed to try to impress God. God is not impressed. He's impressed if you listen to His voice and obey His authority. We'll talk about these ideas tonight. Also, the Chafer conference has been going on since Monday. All the presentations have been good, but a few have been exceptional (IMHO). I'll summarize some of the presentations if we have time. Israel means Israel (not C-H-U-R-C-H). There are two regatherings prophesied for Israel (1 in unbelief; 1 in belief) Who owns the land? The impact of the holocaust on Jewish missions Ethics in reporting on the Arab-Israeli Conflict Heroes of the Holocaust: Vignettes of Messianic Jewish Martyrs The Interconnection and Interdependence of Christian and Jewish Zionism What is the cause of the Middle East Conflict (very good. I suggest listening to Randy Price on this one...https://www.deanbibleministries.org/presentations/message/08-the-truth-behind-the-headlines-2-what-is-the-cause-of-the-middle-east-conflict )

Good afternoon! I hope you are doing well and thriving in the Lord. Sometimes we go up and down in the Christian life. We always want to be on top, but often we are in the dumps. Don't give up, this is pretty normal. Keep going back to your position in Christ. Keep going back to prayer to the Father through Christ and in the power of the Spirit. Don't give up. The Christian life is not a 100m sprint, it's a long and arduous journey of some defeats but lots of victories. Keep trusting His promises. He loves you and you belong to Him. You are His inheritance! He is forming a legacy and you are a part of it. You are very important to Him. He will never leave you or forsake you! He is constantly there to provide and sustain you. Always turn to Him. In all things give thanks. This is God's will for you in Christ Jesus! 1 Corinthians 6 is another very interesting section. The Corinthians had some serious issues, but most new believers do. It's not automatic that we stop living like we did before we believed, but we do have the Spirit's transformative power toward us when we rely on Him to change the way we live. Transformation and changed lives is the normal pattern for a Christian.

1 Corinthians 11 Imitating Paul and Warning Against Arrogance

Tonight's lesson will finish the first report from those out of Chloe's house. It's really a challenging section to work through. The report was that the Corinthians had divided into factions. Paul traced bad behavior back to the Corinthian's outlook on life that manifested itself in an arrogant attitude. His corrective was theological. They needed a proper outlook on the word of the cross and the work of the Spirit. The fix for all of our bad behavior can be traced back to poor theology, even if it's a misplaced emphasis. We learn a lot from Paul here. Rooting out the problem in our theology can take years. Stay the course. Be patient. He is at work as we stay in His word and request understanding.

1 Corinthians 10 How to Think About God's Servants and the World's Evaluation of Them

Paul continues to address the first report from those of Chloe's house; the factions present at Corinth that demonstrated they were still carnal. Paul is not just wanting them to "get back in fellowship." That is over-individualizing the passage. He wants them to adopt his viewpoint on the cross and the Spirit. They can not become truly spiritual with any other viewpoint. Their arrogance was a hindrance. They did not realize the preeminence of Christ and Him crucified and the magnanimity of the gift of the Spirit who can produce true spirituality when we listen to His word no matter the servant.

1 Corinthians 09 Each Man's Contribution to the Local Church

This is an interesting passage in context. The passage is usually taught to be about how we live our lives and resulting reward. That is a good application of the passage, but it is not the interpretation of the passage. The interpretation is narrower and deals with the source of wisdom each believer uses to contribute to the local church and how it relates to his reward. The passage contains perhaps the strongest warning against introducing human methods, philosophies, teachings, etc... into the local church which is a dwelling of the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 08 Three Types of Men

Tonight we'll work through the three types of men. Some think there are four types of men, and I used to teach that, but closer inspection leads me to conclude that there are only three types of men in this passage. This is a more realistic position; natural men, spiritual men, and carnal men. The important thing to grasp is that we should all be spiritual and learning advanced teaching and practices. The Corinthians were in trouble for being carnal after five years, and the audience of Hebrews were in trouble for falling back into carnality. So it's possible to fall back if you don't apply the things you have learned. There is a lot more about behavior (what we do with the truth) than I imagined in this section. It's not so much about learning as it is about applying what we've already learned. When we fail to do that we can't go forward in our learning. We can even get to the point we may not be able to make further progress. Hebrews 6 is talking about this. It's a very applicable.

1 Corinthians 06 The Contrast of the Cross and Human Wisdom 1:18-31

The first problem at Corinth was party divisions, but they were rooted in a much deeper problem; their failure to appreciate the word of the cross and consequent exaltation of human wisdom displayed by clever speech. Someone can be a great orator but the content has absolutely no value before God. In fact, God will destroy it. It is nothing. God uses a very distasteful message to bring people to Himself. It is this message that has His power. For some reason this message appealed to you and me, and now it should be of greatest importance. There are not many of us who were called who were members of Mensa, not many who were Senators or Congressman, not many who are millionaires, but this is in step with God's doings so that He gets all the glory and all our boasting is in Him. This same message of the power of the gospel is not just so we get saved from the penalty of sin and go to heaven, but also to continue to be saved from the power of sin and overcome difficulties by enjoying rest.

We're going to get into the main body of 1 Corinthians tonight. It's very interesting how theological this book is, especially when we are prone to think of 1 Corinthians as a book addressing carnal behavior. But, as usual with the apostle Paul, he sees a link between bad behavior and bad theology, so he will always be bringing theology into the picture. In the first 17 verses Christ is mentioned 13 times, so it becomes evident that the answer for their bad behavior is to go back to Christ. The cross is also very prominent, and the issue becomes salvation, not of the lost, but salvation of the saved (1:18) and how important it is for believers to go back to the power of the cross for daily living.

Tonight we will finish up the Introduction and Background of the book by looking at some of the key verses, the key word, and the key idea. Hopefully these famous verses will be familiar to you, and if not, they will motivate you to want to learn 1 Corinthians. Then we will go into the Introduction in 1:1-9. Like most of Paul's introductions and salutations, he gives in seed form some of the ideas that he will develop in the letter. In other words, the uniquenesses here are a foreshadowing of what is in the book. There are three of these in the introduction to the Corinthians, so watch for them. They set you up for where Paul is going in the letter.

Last week we went into Acts 19 where Paul was at Ephesus. This is where he wrote 1 Corinthians from. At the time he was having great success in Ephesus and all Asia heard the word of the Lord. Paul's teaching was so influential it was impacting the entire economy of Ephesus! At the same time, the church in Corinth was not doing so well. They lived in a very diverse culture that was deeply alluring. Idolatry, food, music, entertainment, sports, libertarianism, prostitution, fornication, asceticism, you name it, they had it, and the Corinthians were struggling to get out of it. Tonight we'll get into this background of Corinth and why Paul struggled with this church more than any other. I'll show you some neat things that will be like keys to unlock Corinthians.
