A Parting Prayer

Paul left a bit of his heart everywhere he ministered. As he journeyed on his third missionary journey to Jerusalem, he gathered the Ephesian elders for a final exhortation and prayer together. Paul never expected to see the Ephesians in the flesh again (Acts 20:25). He wanted the church to continue to be overseen, shepherded, and stewarded to Christ (20:28). The church leaders would have to guard the flock (20:29-31). Paul ended his exhortations by commending the church to God in prayer (Acts 20:32). He prayed for the church; they prayed for him (20:36).

Paul saw- in person or in the spirit- a vision of the third heavens. This was glorious! He could not repeat what he heard. To prevent pride, God graciously gave Paul a messenger from Satan- a thorn in the flesh. This affliction humbled Paul and made him reliant on God's grace. We can bring every burden to God in prayer, as Paul did repeatedly. God can deliver us from the affliction or give us grace to endure the affliction. Let us pray that the Lord's will be done- whether to deliver us or keep us depending upon Himself in our troubles.

Afflicted to Comfort

The Apostle Paul endured affliction and received comfort from God through the Son (2 Corinthians 1:1-14). His afflictions and comfort equipped him to help others. Paul's sufferings were both physical and emotional. The Corinthian church had brought Paul much pain; God comforted Paul by restoring many in the church to Himself and to Paul. The church's revival brought comfort to Paul and Titus; Paul encouraged the church to comfort one another as well.

Thank God for carnal Christians. Don't thank God they are carnal- thank God that He's saved them and will change them! The Lord promised Paul that He had many people in Corinth (Acts 18:9-10). The church in Corinth was made up of saints being sanctified as they were set apart for God. Unfortunately, the church remained immature and carnal (1 Corinthians 3:1-3). Paul began First Corinthians by thanking God for these carnal Christians. He thanks God for giving them grace by saving them. He thanks God for equipping them with the Holy Spirit's gifts. He thanks God that He will present the church to Himself complete when Christ returns. Let us thank God for carnal saints that God is still working on! Let us pray that He will mature us and conform us to the image of Christ as we serve Him. Let us praise God that He will complete the good work He's begun in us!

A Recipe for Effective Intercession

Paul's ministry in Corinth is described in Acts 18:1-18. This background demonstrates that effective intercession for others is the result of shared companionship in the gospel over time. Paul's relationship with the people of Corinth gave him a great concern for their spiritual correction and enabled him to pray effectively for them.

Paul saw gospel power in the Thessalonians. They were growing in faith and in love for one another (2 Thess 1:3). This encouraged him to ask the Thessalonians to pray for him! He wanted to see further fruit- more gospel advance! He asked the church to pray for rescue from enemies of the gospel. Paul's prayer request for himself led to him praying once more for the Thessalonians! They had been warned about the coming of the Antichrist, the deception to come, and the need to be steadfast (2 Thessalonians 2:1-15). He prayed that they would grow in the love of God and the steadfastness of Christ (3:5).

Paul cared about the church of Philippi (Acts 16:35-40). He prayed for them whenever he remembered them (Philippians 1:3). Even though Paul was in prison in Rome far away from Philippi, he still cared for these Christians. He loved them. He rejoiced in God's work in them. So, he prayed for them. We too should continue to pray even for those who are not physically close by us. Our prayers come before God's throne; He hears us, however distant our brothers and sisters in Christ may be from us.

The Lord gave Paul the "Macedonian Vision," so Paul went with his team through the region and came to Philippi. In Philippi, he shared the gospel with the seeker Lydia in the place of prayer. After he and Silas were arrested for silencing the possessed slave girl who made a spectacle of the trips to the place of prayer, Paul and Silas spent their night praying and praising God in song. God knows those who are seeking Him. Let us pray that we will be obedient to His leading to speak to lost seekers about the Lord Jesus Christ! God knows when His people respond to suffering by thanking Him, praising Him, and trusting Him. Let us then cast our burdens upon God with every confidence that He will sustain us!

The Good Fight

When a fight broke out in Antioch, Paul and Barnabas resorted to the Church of Jerusalem to ensure the gospel was clearly presented. We must not add any requirements to the gospel: we are saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Peter, Paul and Barnabas, and James argued from experience and the Scriptures that salvation is by grace through faith in Christ, not by works. The Jerusalem Council agreed. They decreed that Gentiles were to show Christian concern for Jewish brothers, but that Gentiles did not need to become Jewish converts to be saved. A second fight in Acts 15 had to do with how to restore a fallen brother, John Mark.

The first missionary journey was characterized by evangelistic preaching, compassionate helping (healing), and earnest praying. The gospel is powerful, though often opposed. Let us pray for our church leaders and for one another. We all need prayer!

Helping Hands, Winning Hearts, Consecrating Prayers

The church wins souls, baptizes, proclaims the Word of God, fellowships together, remembers Christ's death at the Lord's Table, and loves one another (Acts 2:38-44). The church of Antioch lent helping hands to Judea (Jerusalem) when famine came (Acts 11:27-30). It was a church with five talented preachers (Acts 13:1-2). As the Word of God went forth and multiplied in Jerusalem and other churches (Acts 12:24), the Holy Spirit commanded the church of Antioch to send Barnabas and Saul out as evangelists (missionaries). This church's hands helped other believers; they determined to win the hearts of the lost abroad too (Acts 13:4-16)! They consecrated Barnabas and Saul to missionary service by their prayers (13:3). We too should pray for those we send out, for those we have sent out, and for one another!

As Peter languished in prison, the church prayed. Herod planned to kill Peter. God had other plans. The church prayed fervently. The church was amazed at God's answer to their prayers. We need to pray expecting God's answer to exceed our expectations. We need to pray for those persecuted for their faith.

Both Cornelius and Peter were men of prayer. When they both prayed, God answered! An angel was sent; a vision received. Peter went; souls were saved. Not only was God glorified, but Peter was further sanctified as God transformed his perspective radically! By these men's prayers and the obedience of Peter, the Holy Spirit worked and souls were saved and the church stayed unified. What will God do because we pray tonight?

The early church had a problem: service to some members was poorly (or not!) administered. The apostles' solution was to appoint seven men full of the Holy Spirit to serve. The apostles desired to prioritize prayer and preaching. When the church chose seven men, they committed these new assistants in the ministry to the Lord in prayer. Both our ministers and ministries need prayer in the church!!!

The series on Acts: Prayers of the Early Church continues as we look at Acts 5:17-6:4. The early church made proclamation of God's Word a priority. Apostles faced imprisonment, flogging, and competing priorities. God providentially provided for the Word of God to go forth through Gamaliel's counsel. The church made sure to take care of fellow Christians while ensuring pastoral work of preaching and prayer continued.

Troubles that make you pray are God's blessings in disguise. Anything that forces you into the arms of your Heavenly Father is a good. The apostles had been warned not to speak in the name of Jesus. They got the church praying and were given power and boldness as the Holy Spirit filled them.

Ten times in the book of Acts, the word "power" is used. We will see the Holy Spirit gives power to proclaim the gospel news of Jesus' power over death. God's power healed the lame man (Acts 3-4), making Annas and others jealous. Simon's power came from demons, but the power of God was greater! The Scriptures, rightly handled by Apollos, gave power to refute arguments.

Peter preached the Word of God to those lost in sin. The Holy Spirit of God convicted and saved the lost. The church worshiped together. The Word of God, the Lord's Table, Fellowship with the saints, and Prayer brought God's power into the church. God continued to save lost souls as saved souls worshiped, met with one another and with Him in prayer. Let us look to the Spirit of God to unleash His power as we look to the Word of God for the promises of God and meet with God in prayer!

Pentecost follows 50 days after Passover. The disciples gathered in the upper room to pray. Their prayers for the baptism of the Holy Spirit were magnificently answered at Pentecost. This answered prayer fulfilled Scriptural promises. In our day, let us pray for the Holy Spirit to once again use His Word to glory God's Son through the conversion of souls and the revival of our own souls.

As we continue our series "Acts: Prayers of the Early Church," we see Peter prompted by situation and Scripture to suggest the selection of a replacement for Judas Iscariot. This selection prompted the church to pray for God's choice (His will to be done) and for their own direction and discernment. We too need to seek to pray according to God's revealed will in His Word with biblical discernment as we seek direction in our own lives and for our ministries.

The disciples had years of experience with the Lord Jesus Christ. They'd seen His miracles, heard His teaching, and met the risen Savior. They saw the Ascension. Jesus had given them a job to do-- but first they must wait. When we wait for God to direct or empower His work, do we commit it all to the Lord in prayer?

Troubles bring us to the end of ourselves. If we're depending on our wit or our resources, we find they are not enough. Twice Elisha was surrounded by armies. His servant and his king despaired; Elisha trusted and waited for God. Let us do likewise in our extremities!

In this Psalm David prays that the Lord will both teach him God's ways and guide him in smooth paths. He expresses his trust in the Lord even as he encourages his own soul to continue waiting on the Lord.

As we continue meditating on Psalm 27 during prayer meeting, we focus on Psalm 27:7-10. In these verses David not only wants to behold the Lord in His beauty (v. 4), but he also desires to be heard by God (7). David prays to be heard. As David speaks to God in prayer, he knows God desires to be desired. God wants us to seek His face. David wants to seek God's face! He is determined to seek God (8-9). God is hearing from him. David ends this section of Psalm 27 confident that God has heard him. Others- even parents- might forsake him, but the Lord never will (10). He has been heard.
