John concludes his Gospel with an unabashed purpose statement: he wrote these eyewitness accounts of Jesus' life so that others would believe in him and receive his gift of eternal and abundant life.

Peter had failed and everyone knew it. He had denied Jesus three times during his darkest hour. Even if he wanted to follow and serve Jesus, how could he? He was disqualified, right? Wrong! Jesus tracked him down, forgave him, and reminded him of his calling and commission.

The disciples knew the ethical teachings of Jesus, they'd seen his exemplary life, and they even knew (from Mary) that he'd been raised from the dead. But none of these things changed them . . . until Jesus came. His presence brought the peace, the pardon, the purpose, and the power they were missing.

It's Sunday morning after Good Friday. None of the disciples are at the tomb, watching for Jesus to rise from the dead as he promised. But Mary goes to anoint his dead body with burial spices. The tomb is empty! Jesus is gone, but his graveclothes remain! What does Jesus do to prove to the original skeptics that he is indeed alive – and that everything has changed?

Even in the "passive" events of Jesus' death and burial, God is working. His Old Testament promises and types are being fulfilled. A fountain of spiritual cleansing is being opened up. And Jesus is going into death and the grave ahead of us to fundamentally transform the nature of those things.

It Is Finished

After a long leadup, Jesus is finally crucified outside the city of Jerusalem. His only crime, as indicated on the inscription above his head, is that he is "the King of the Jews." This death is not a haphazard sequence of tragic events; rather, it is the fulfillment of the Law and prophets, orchestrated by the Master Storyteller himself. And when Jesus cried, "It is finished!" he meant it: salvation's plan was completed and there's nothing left but to believe.

Pilate is caught on the horns of a dilemma. Though he's pronounced Jesus innocent three times, the Jewish religious leaders relentlessly demand that he be crucified. Pilate can condemn an innocent man or lose his own job – and perhaps his life. In this intriguing story, the religious leaders are the real blasphemers, the governor is powerless, and the guilty is set free because the innocent chooses to die in his place.

The religious leaders have brought Jesus to the Roman governor, Pilate, demanding his swift execution by crucifixion. In the ensuing power struggle, both the political and religious authorities reveal their hypocrisy and their lust for power. In stark contrast, Jesus reveals his real power, paradoxically, in sacrificial love. Which kingdom's agenda will you follow?

After Jesus is arrested in the garden, he's whisked away to an illegal trial in the middle of the night at the home of the high priest. While Jesus courageously affirms his public Gospel message and defends his disciples, Peter caves under the pressure of the moment and denies him three times.

The Last Supper has been finished. Jesus crosses the Kidron Valley with eleven of his disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane. It is the point of no return. Jesus knows full well Judas is leading the religious and political officials to this exact place to have him arrested. He'll be dead within hours. What do we learn about the identity and love of Jesus through this story?

7 Marks of The Church

In John 17, Jesus prayed that his followers be characterized by seven character traits: faith, joy, holiness, truth, mission, unity, and ultimately love. He prayed that the Church would be filled with these traits simply by living in union with him. This message explores the centrality of love to the effective functioning of the other character qualities.

Just before Jesus went to a cross to lay down his life for our sins, he prayed. What we observe in this prayer is a passion for the glory of God, a commitment to saving and sanctifying his own, and a love for countercultural unity. To the end, Jesus prayed and worked for the Father to be known by the world, so that more people would be saved by faith in him.

Jesus told his disciples he was going away for a little while, and they would experience sorrow. But his resurrection would conquer sin and sorrow, so that believers could experience both immediate and eternal joy – joy that transcends circumstances. To experience this joy now, we must simply trust him and live as if what Jesus said is true.

The disciples struggled to accept that it was to their advantage that Jesus would go away and send his Spirit. So Jesus taught them more about the ministry of the coming Spirit – first, toward the world, and then, toward those who believed in him. Interestingly, the Spirit would point both audiences to Jesus as the standard and the central focus.

Shortly before Jesus is taken away to be beaten and crucified, he warns his disciples that the world would hate them just as it had hated him. If you follow the ways of Jesus instead of the ways of the world, your life will convict the world of sin, and the world will oppose you. But Jesus urges a faithful witness empowered by the presence of the Spirit.

In contrast to old covenant Israel, which failed in its calling to be God's fruitful vineyard, Jesus is the true Vine. By abiding in him, and allowing his word to abide in us, believers flourish spiritually. His life nourishes our lives and we bear the fruit of his character. The Father works actively in our lives to prune away anything that would hinder our fruitfulness.

Knowing that he's going away and his disciples are facing significant confusion, doubt, and anxiety, Jesus urges them to pursue lives of obedience and to look for the Helper. The Helper is nothing less than the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, who will come live in believers to teach, comfort, and empower.

On the eve of his death, Jesus reassures his disciples that they already know the Father because they know him – and he claims ontological unity and equality with the Father (and the Spirit) as part of the Trinity. Because he's going away, and will send the Spirit, the Church can continue to live and pray with power. The Gospel of the Kingdom will expand, not shrink. And prayers that align with his purposes in the world will be gladly answered.

Peter wants to follow Jesus wherever he goes. And he's confident he has what it takes to lay down his life for Jesus. (Spoiler alert: he doesn't.) Thomas speaks for all the disciples, admitting he doesn't know where Jesus is going or how to get there. Religion tries to answer this question and bridge this gap by telling you the way to God is through your performance. Jesus claims he is the way – and the only way back to the Father.

Why does Jesus say the hour for him to be glorified has come if he's headed to a gruesome death on a cross? Why does he say the disciples can't come with him? What does he mean when he says the command to love one another is "new"? How can we love each other as Jesus has first loved us?

At the Last Supper with his disciples, Jesus prophesied that one of them who ate his bread would be a traitor. Judas is subsequently identified, though most of the disciple seemed unaware of his intention to betray Jesus. This message goes back chronologically in the story of Judas to uncover the roots of his treacherous heart and to serve as a cautionary tale for others.

During the Last Supper with his disciples, Jesus rose from the table, poured a basin of water, and began to wash their feet. This prompts an awkward exchange with Peter, where he first denies the Lord the opportunity to wash his feet, then asks him to wash all of him. Jesus concludes by commanding the disciples to do for one another what he had done to them. This sermon unpacks the meaning of both the foot washing itself and Jesus' command that his followers should continue to do as he had done.

Most of the people continue on the same path and are actually hardened in their unbelief, while others wrestle with just how closely they want to be associated with Jesus.

And every true disciple must follow him on the path of self-denial and service.

When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on what's now known as "Palm Sunday," he was greeted by crowds that were filled with nationalistic fervor. They ignored Jesus' true mission to lay down his life and they tried to make him king on their own terms. But Jesus wouldn't stoop to their demands. He wouldn't save the Jews from the Gentiles; he would give his life to save both Jews and Gentiles.

As the Passover approaches, many people gather in Jerusalem, and the religious leaders plan to arrest Jesus. Jesus goes to Bethany, where He is honored with a dinner at the home of Lazarus. During the meal, Mary anoints Jesus' feet with expensive perfume, a gesture of love and preparation for His burial. Judas criticizes her for wasting the perfume, but Jesus commends her.

When Jesus arrives in Bethany after the death of Lazarus, Martha and Mary meet him separately to express shock and grief. Jesus declares, "I AM the resurrection and the life," and invites them to believe. Jesus storms to the tomb in anger at death, but also sheds tears of grief. He simply speaks, raising Lazarus from the dead, provoking a mixed reaction of belief and murderous contempt.

Lazarus, a friend of Jesus, falls ill, and when Jesus hears of it, he declares that the sickness will not end in death but will glorify God. Despite knowing Lazarus has died, Jesus stays two more days before deciding to go to Bethany. He explains to His disciples that Lazarus' death is for their benefit, so they may believe. The disciples are concerned about the dangers of returning to Judea, but Thomas, in a resigned yet courageous tone, suggests they go with Jesus, even if it means facing death.

The Jewish crowds of Jerusalem have rejected Jesus' divine identity once and for all. They refuse to believe in spite of many miraculous works that prove his power and authority. Jesus is the giver of eternal life, but they don't want a messiah who doesn't play by their rules. Jesus departs Jerusalem for the Jordan, and many who followed John the Baptist believe in him there.

Jesus heals a man born blind, demonstrating that his condition was not due to sin but so that God's works could be revealed. After Jesus makes mud and instructs the man to wash in the Pool of Siloam, the man gains his sight. This miracle prompts skepticism from the Pharisees, who interrogate the man and his parents. Jesus later finds him, reveals his identity, and discusses spiritual blindness, emphasizing faith and the contrast between true sight and spiritual ignorance.

The Jews of Jesus' day claimed Abraham and God as their ethnic and spiritual fathers. But Jesus cautioned them that their lives looked more like another father: the devil – and they were enslaved to his sinful patterns of living. Only by accepting that Jesus was the true Light of the world and abiding in his truth could they find true freedom.

At the Feast of Tabernacles each year, the Jews would light four massive menorahs, each fed by four basins of oil, to illuminate the temple. It was a reminder of the pillar of fire that led their ancestors out of slavery. So imagine the uproar when Jesus stood up at this feast and said, "I AM the Light of the world," and went on to claim equality with the God of their fathers. Discover the real reason why the religious leaders of Israel couldn't understand Jesus' identity.

The familiar story of "The Woman Caught in Adultery," at first glance, seems to show us a Jesus who defends a sinner in opposition to the Law of Moses. Many love this story because Jesus confronts the hypocrisy of religious leaders. Others love this story because Jesus tells the adulterous woman to stop sinning. But what is this story really intended to communicate about the Gospel?

After seven days of the water pouring ceremony at the Feast of Booths, Jesus cried out on the eighth day, promising an eternal stream of water to anyone who thirsted and believed in him. This signified that he was not only the source of salvation, but also the source of satisfaction and the Spirit.

When Jesus went up to Jerusalem for the Feast of Booths, there was significant disagreement over his identity. Many just wanted a Messiah they could use for their own ends. Many were curious, but not convinced. Many more overtly hated and rejected him. But there are three keys in this story to receiving Jesus on his own terms, inviting us to answer, "What will you do with Jesus?"

In what's widely regarded as one of the most shocking, offensive things Jesus said, he told the crowds to eat his flesh and drink his blood. Surely he didn't mean to violate the Mosaic Law and consume his literal flesh and blood, but what did he mean? How was he connecting himself to the imagery of the Passover lamb? And how can you identify with and "feed on" Jesus today, so that he lives his life in and through yours?

The day after Jesus fed the 5,000 (men, plus women and children), the crowds tracked him down and wanted him to continue to meet their physical demands. Jesus took the opportunity to share "the Bread of Life discourse" instead. Drawing a parallel to the manna that fed their ancestors in the wilderness, Jesus said he was the true and living bread that came down from heaven to satisfy the deepest longings of the human soul.

After feeding the 5,000 (men, plus women and children), Jesus sent his disciples ahead of him across the Sea of Galilee while he remained behind to pray. They encountered a violent storm; so Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. This miracle reveals more about the identity and authority of Jesus and how he shows up in the midst of our "storms" of life.

Thousands followed Jesus to the far side of the Sea of Galilee to hear him teach and to seek his healing. As the day drew to a close, Jesus urged his disciples to feed the masses. How? One boy had five barley loaves and two fish. Jesus took them, miraculously multiplied them, and satisfied the hunger of all who were there. Seeing that he was the Prophet like Moses, the people tried to make him their Messiah-King by force, but Jesus withdrew. His true mission would not be hijacked by others' wishes and demands.

The key to understanding this text is that the Jews have functionally put Jesus on trial, and he's defending his identity and integrity by calling a series of witnesses. In the end, Jesus warns them that they are not the final judge – he is! So they must either repent and believe, and know him as the Savior who gives eternal life, or they will face eternal judgment.

At one of the Jewish feasts, Jesus goes by the Pool of Bethesda and heals a man who'd been an invalid for 38 years. In an instant, he reverses not only physical impotence and deformity but also social ostracism, ceremonial uncleanness, and hopelessness. And he deliberately heals on the Sabbath day to show the Jews that he'd come to fulfill the true meaning of Sabbath rest.

An official serving in the court of Herod Antipas comes to Jesus with a great need: his son is sick and on the verge of death. But instead of coming to heal the boy, Jesus tells the father to trust him and sends him on his way. That very hour, many miles away, the boy is healed. When the father returns home the next day, his faith in the word of Jesus is confirmed and strengthened.

Meanwhile, Jesus tells his disciples that he's sustained and satisfied by doing the will of the Father and engaging in his mission. He invites the disciples to come into his field and share in the harvest of souls for eternal life. The Samaritans return to the well and many more believe in Jesus as the Savior of the world.

Jesus "had to go through Samaria" because he was a man on a mission to seek and save the lost. The "woman at the well" had many barriers that prevented her from truly knowing and enjoying God, let alone being a part of the reconciled worshiping community. So Jesus sought her out and offered her the living water that both saves and satisfies. He shared with her the nature of true worship that transcends culture and place, and yields oneself wholeheartedly to the power of the Spirit and the truth of Jesus Christ.

He recognizes the surpassing greatness of Jesus and he finds his contentment and joy in making much of him.

Everyone's heard of John 3:16, but few know the context. Jesus is talking to Nicodemus, a religious leader of the Jews, about the necessity of being "born again." As those who are already condemned by our sin, it isn't enough simply to tag along with Jesus because of his signs and wonders; we must receive God's gracious gift of regeneration. We must look to Jesus in faith and live.

Temple Throwdown

At Passover, Jesus enters the Temple complex and immediately flies into a rage, whipping the moneychangers and merchants, dumping their boxes of money, and overturning their tables. How does this angry outburst fit with your conception of Jesus? Why did he do what he did? And what does this story teach us about both the nature of the Temple and the purpose of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection?

We've Found Him

John uses the call of the first disciples to show us a prototype or paradigm for discipleship in general. It's assumed that people begin to follow Jesus because they recognize him for who he uniquely is, and they know they need what he alone has to offer. But then the disciple continues the process of becoming like Jesus and bringing others to follow him as well.

In this section, John introduces us to another John: the baptizer. First and foremost, the baptizer was a witness who came to tell others about the person and work of Jesus. A paradoxical mix of personal humility, an eccentric personality, and a prophetic/confrontational style, John just wanted people to experience the forgiveness and Spirit that would come through Jesus' salvation.

God in the Flesh

John 1 alludes to the story of the Exodus numerous times to make the point that God came and "pitched his tent" in the midst of his people through the incarnation of Jesus. Jesus revealed the glory of God that Moses couldn't see – but he did so paradoxically, through the cross. We're invited to respond in faith to the way Jesus reveals the fullness of grace and truth, and thereby receive adoption into God's family.

The Living Word

Instead of beginning his Gospel with the genealogy or birth narrative of Jesus, John goes all the way back to Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning." But where we expect him to say "God," he instead inserts "the Word" – Jesus. Jesus is the eternal Creator, John says. Jesus is light and life. And Jesus is the full self-revelation of God because Jesus came and lived among us.
