Practical Guidance for Private & Family Worship

Last week, we looked at: The Biblical Importance of Family Worship. I spoke to you about how the very light of nature shows us God's eternal power and divine nature and that He is to be worshipped daily by us (WCF 21:1, 6). The person who requested this topic also asked me to do a sermon about how to do family worship—for some practical guidance. So our topic today is: Practical Guidance for Family Worship

The Importance of Family Worship

Today's topic is: The Biblical Importance of Family Worship. Both personal and family worship are sorely neglected in our day. I will include both. Today I want to show you that daily personal and family worship is expected of all people. It is a basic duty for every human being.

Minced Oaths

The suggested topic we are looking at today is Minced Oaths. Not everyone is familiar with that term. It refers to using God's name in vain, but in a modified way—Gosh darn instead of God damn—that sort of thing. In dealing with this subject, I am going to give you a general overview of the third commandment before I address the specific subject of minced oaths.

Children and the First Table of the Law

Today we continue our Suggested Topics Sermon series with suggestion #40. The topic is Children and the First Table of the Law. The question is, how do we cultivate obedience to the First Four Commandments? Do we discipline for infractions? How do we teach our children interact with other believers who have divergent practices so that we are firm, but charitable?

Provoking Children to Wrath

Our focus today is on fathers—Ephesians 6:4. Much can be learned about other relationships too. Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath. All of you know what this means because it is so common. You provoke someone to wrath when you do something that irritates them. You have all struggled with this at times. We can see the sad results of children who have been provoked by their father. How many sullen teenagers there are who have very little regard for their fathers! How many adults there are who have very painful memories of their fathers!

Wise Ways to Disciple Our Children as They Grow

Wise parents will adjust the way they disciple their children as their children grow up, giving them greater and greater freedom as they mature. The person who suggested this topic asked me to deal with all different aspects of discipleship: protecting, nurturing, instructing, and preparing.

How to Know When a Non-communicant is Ready for Communion

How do we know when children are ready to come to the Lord's Table? This question is raised because we are not expressly told about children and the Lord's Supper. There are things like that in the Scripture. We must deduce from what we are given in scripture.

Covenant Succession

Two errors often arise in relation to this doctrine of covenant succession. When the church becomes nominal, it is presumed that we are all good Christians even when we neither profess to believe the true gospel or walk in obedience. When revival breaks out, covenant succession has been rejected and children have been treated as unbelievers instead of nurtured in the faith. Our great concern must be to see what the Bible says about this and follow that.

How to Build a Christian Family

Today we come to sermon number 35 in our Suggested Topics Sermon series. This is the first sermon in the category of Christian Living in the Home. The suggestion we will be taking up today was very general in nature—it was a request for a sermon on Marriage, Parenting, and Children. I am taking this in very much of an overview fashion: How to Build a Christian Family.
