Mixed Marriages Make a Mess

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: It is often said that girls, from the age of 13 or so, start to plan their marriage. They plan the ceremony, the guests, the cake, the food, the flowers, the doves they will release, the location, the dress, and the dance. Almost always, the last thing they think about and the least time invested in getting, is the bridegroom. But getting the right bridegroom is the one thing on which they should invest most of their time! You see, rain (or Covid) can come a ruin the outdoor wedding. You might be sick on your wedding day. You might have one drunk relative who ruins everything. The food might spoil and people might get sick. Furthermore, that wedding you planned for 10 years is over in a very short time. The guests, cake, food, flowers, doves, ceremony, dress, and dance will be gone and it will be only you and your husband. He will be there for his lifetime. If you marry poorly, it is a life of misery for you. But worse, it is a robbing your children of a good home. And worst of all, you are robbing God of his glory and honor. So hear about this today as this was the problem Nehemiah had to face in Judah. Our headings are: 1. Nehemiah recognized that marriages were messed-up in Judah 2. Nehemiah reminded Judah of the dangers of mixed-marriages 3. Nehemiah removed obstacles to good marriages in Judah Our goals are: That you will pursue faithful families (and support them if you don't have one), so children can be raised with the goal of continuing Christ's kingdom, so praises will go up to him.

Cleaning the Sabbath

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: Within a short time of Nehemiah going back to serving the Persian king in Shushan, the Jews forgot the vows they made to support worship – which you saw last week - and they stopped attending worship on the Sabbath holy. How quickly they fell! They had loved the Sabbath so much, they starting naming their children after the Sabbath – Shabbethai (Ezra 10). Nehemiah had to deal with this. Our headings are: 1. Nehemiah recognized Judah's failure to keep the Sabbath 2. Nehemiah reminded Judah of the danger of Sabbath breaking 3. Nehemiah removed hindrances to Judah's Sabbath keeping Our goals are: That you will prize, protect, and promote the Sabbath so the Lord will receive his due praise and you will receive its promised benefits.

The Right Attitude toward God and Worship

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: This sermon is not about giving but about the attitude toward God and worship. So keep the big picture in mind as we pick up our examination of Nehemiah. Our headings are: 1. God's people confronted for forsaking God and Worship. 2. God's people confessed their sin of forsaking God and Worship. 3. God's minister called for God to bless his work for God and Worship. Our goals are: That you will have the right heart attitude to the one who sent his Son to die for your sins, so you can work for his kingdom, so his kingdom can grow, so he can be worshipped.

Cleaning out the Church for the Kingdom’s Sake

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: What do you do if you have a person living in your house who is always drunk…or uses drugs…or refuses to work…or steals…or takes God's name in vain…or hates your wife? You would be at your wits end very quickly, wouldn't you? Wouldn't you want to clean your house…for the sake of your family? Of course! You would show that person the door! The welfare of your family is your priority. There was also corruption in God's house in Judah! It started with corrupt families. The corrupt priest had made God's house into a pigsty by bringing in a corrupt family to live there. And it was time to clean house! Hear about this today. Our headings are: 1. Corruption of God's House 2. Cleansing of God's House Our goals are: That you will pray and work to clean-up churches where the leadership is corrupted, knowing that corrupt leadership leads to corrupt worship, and that corrupt worship hinders God's kingdom from expanding.

Cleaning out the Family for the Kingdom

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: It is not uncommon to have to listen to a lecture from your mother about how filthy your room is before you clean it up. Isn't that right? It isn't a bad lecture to get, especially if it gets the desired results and your room doesn't look like pigs hang out there. Of course your room didn't start out looking like a pigsty, but life happened and you got busy and didn't do the laundry, and you didn't vacuum, and you forgot about the Kleenex and candy wrappers you left on the night table. Then the ants came. Life happened to Judah also. Judah started off well after the temple was rebuilt and the walls of Jerusalem were restored and they made vows to God. But the Jews became lovers of money (again) more than lovers of God. So they got distracted and things got messy. The family became messy and God's house was ignored. So their personal spiritual houses had to be cleaned. This is today's subject. Our headings are: 1. The Sermon 2. The Sin 3. The Separation Our goals are: That you will frequently look to clean out your personal and family sins so the kingdom of Christ can progress and bring glory to the Savior.

Division of Labor in Christ’s Kingdom

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: Many people see logistics as one of the most difficult, most boring occupations in the world. I am one of those! But statistics and order are essential for success. Example: If you ever watch cargo planes being loaded you will see it is essential the load is stable and locked in position so it doesn't shift during take-offs and landings. It also has to be balanced from side to side and front to back and not too heavy. One little mistake, as has happened a number of times, those planes come falling out of the sky. Once a huge jumbo jet fell out of the sky because the strappers did not strap the load enough. Another time the fuelers confused litres for gallons, though there were only minor injuries. Another time the pilots did not calculate correctly the weight of the plane and didn't give it enough thrust so it didn't take off. Disaster. The same thing is true in the church, except that order in the church is even more essential. After all, failure in the church leads to eternal consequences- even eternity in hell. So see today how Nehemiah made sure the church was well-organized to continue its kingdom building work, even as they waited for Messiah to come. Our headings are: 1. Account of the Leaders 2. Activities of the Leaders 3. Allowance for the Leaders Our goals are: That you will recognize the benefit of the church being well-organized so the kingdom of Christ can come and God can be properly worshipped.

Volunteering for the Kingdom

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: Suppose you have to pack up your things, sell you beautiful house, give up your land, your garden with fresh produce, lose seeing your friends, leave your church behind, and then move to somewhere there is not even good internet connection, no fresh produce, and no security. Would you volunteer to go if asked? Suppose you have to do it to help distant relatives you don't know and don't speak the same language as they, and suppose the new neighbours hate you and everything you stand for! Would you volunteer to go? Suppose you have to do this for someone you saved your life…would you go? Maybe not! Some Jews in the countryside who survived the Babylonian attacks, were asked to volunteer to go (with their families) to dangerous Jerusalem and settle there. Let's see how they responded. Our headings are: 1. God chose the volunteers 2. Men honoured the volunteers 3. God honoured the volunteers Our goals are: That you will be willing to make sacrifices for the one who sacrificed his life on Calvary for you.

Godly Christians Support Worship

Beloved in the Lord: God's people showed their dedication by vowing to not marry non-believers, to keep the Sabbath, and to help the poor. With these things in place, the people then could do the work God called them to do…worship him and build his kingdom. Now the Jews started getting into the details, giving 4 specific things they would do to support worship and build the kingdom. Our headings are: 1. The temple gift 2. The temple wood 3. The temple offerings 4. The temple tithes Our goals are: That you will see the need for and play your part in the proper worship of your Savior and building his kingdom.

Wholehearted Commitment to the Lord

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: The task God has given to his church is impossible to achieve by human strength. You need superhuman strength to fulfill your duties. You need superhuman strength to be a good husband, wife, friend, Christian, employee, or teacher. So you have to go to the one who will give you this superhuman strength. But to get the things you need to do the things you ought, you have to wholly commit yourself to the Lord. And that was exactly what the Jews had to come to terms with and do! They had sinned grievously and for 300 years they were in turmoil, but now they had come back to Jerusalem – God brought them back – and now they had to rebuild the temple, restore worship, ready themselves for the coming of the Savior, and raise-up his kingdom. This wholehearted commitment was their starting point. Hear about this today. Our headings are: 1. The People of the Oath 2. The Principles of the Oath 3. The Particulars of the Oath Our goals are: That you and others will commit yourself to fulfilling your task to help build the kingdom so your Savior will be glorified.

God is Faithful

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: This is a chapter of praise! The Jews praised God because he rescued them from the pit of rebellion and the pit of idolatry and established them as his bride and took care of them as they travelled from Egypt to Canaan. God then established them in Canaan, giving them protected cities, free houses, animals they did not raise, vineyards and orchards they did not plant, and wells they did not dig. Yet they jumped into the pit of provocation and the pit of pride in Canaan! Among other things, they intermarried with non-believers and acted as if their accomplishments were of their own making. This provoked God's anger and he sent them at various times into captivity. And yet, every time they ended in captivity and called on God, he forgave them and re-established them as his own…so great was his love. We conclude this chapter seeing the Israelites praise God for his faithfulness in spite of their sins of pit-jumping. Our headings are: 1. God was faithful in the Past 2. God, be faithful in the Present 3. God, we will be faithful in the Future Our goals are: That you will be quick to ask for forgiveness if you fall into a pit, and you will then praise God for his faithfulness to forgive – a forgiveness that comes to you through Christ your Savior.

Beloved in the Lord: This chapter of Nehemiah focused on praising God for his goodness to the Jews! He rescued them from the pit of rebellion and the pit of idolatry into which they fell and after rescuing them from their pits he established them to their rightful place as his bride and took care of them for the whole 40 years as they travelled from Egypt to Canaan. God continued to establish them in Canaan. But unfortunately, they fell into 2 more pits from which God had to rescue them. Hear about this today. Our headings are: 1. God's People Established in Canaan Permanently 2. God's People Pulled out of the Pit of Provocations 3. God's People Pulled out of the Pit of Pride Our goals are: That as the redeemed of Christ, you will be thankful when God pulls you out of your pits into which you fall.

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: The Jews were renewed in their faith and they showed it. The most important way in which they showed their faith was in worship. And the most important thing about worship is praise of God! And the most important way of praising if God is for who is and what he has done. And one of the most important things he does for his children is to rescue them when they fall into pits! He rescued them from hell for sure…and that is ground for praise, but he also rescues them when they fall into temporary pits. Hear about this today. Our headings are: 1. Pulled out of the pit of rebellion 2. Pulled out of the pit of idolatry 3. Pulled out of the pit and established Our goals are: That you will be thankful when God pulls you out of pits you dig for yourself and fall into.

A Pattern of Praise

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: Before the Jews got all their laws straightened-out, before they could appoint judges, before they could establish good military order, they stopped and worshipped. And even when they started to pray, they did not focus on all the things they personally needed. They did not ask for soldiers, for wealth, for the death of their enemies, or for total freedom from the Medo-Persians. Instead, they focused on praising God for his greatness and his goodness. This is what you will hear about today. Our headings are: 1. Praise God for his Greatness Displayed to the World 2. Praise God for his Goodness Displayed to the World Our goals are: That you will see God's greatness and goodness, celebrate his greatness and his goodness, and speak of his greatness and goodness so others can see them and celebrate them!

Prayer Is The Other Part Of Revival

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: If you want revival, you have to read the Word of God and know what needs to be done. This has been proven every time there has been Christian revival. That's what the Jews did: They read the Word and they started to obey. But what about their past sins? How would they deal with them? Their sins couldn't just disappear! They could not deal with them as false religions: Give money to the poor…beat themselves on the back…or as it common today…bury the memory of their sins. No! None of these things was acceptable to a just God. Rather, they needed to confess their sins… And after confession, with their relationship restored with God, they had to then begin to praise him. This is the other part of revival. This is what you will hear about. Our headings are: 1. Preparation for their Prayer 2. Confession of their Prayer 3. Adoration of their Prayer Our goals: That you will be encouraged to pray acknowledging your sins, asking for help, and adoring your wonderful Savior.
