Christ exits the tomb vindicated and approved by the Father. He has successfully completed His mission. He has atoned for His brothers and sisters, He has satisfied the wrath of God, He has defeated the sting of death, and He has been vindicated in new resurrection life. As we follow Christ in death and resurrection, may we see what David saw. The goal of this new life is to get it out and to make it contagious. The gospel of Christ is for rich and for poor. It is for Jew and for Gentile. It is for ancient saints and for those who have not yet been born. God has made a world in which there are repetitive, ordinary things to do. There are two ways to see this repetition – one is to see it as empty and meaningless. In this view there is nothing more than what exists under the sun. There is no meaning beyond what is in front of you. This is the way of nihilism and despair. Solomon flirted with this darkness when his heart was led astray. Thanks be to God, however, that His mercy visited Solomon and brought him to repentance. The Lord opened Solomon's eyes to see that the ordinary, recurring nature of life is not meant to show us emptiness, but to teach us the rhythm of God's constancy and faithfulness. He is stamping eternity on our hearts by teaching us to enjoy everyday blessings, like manna in the desert. If there is nothing beyond what lies under the sun, then life is indeed futile, empty, and meaningless. There would be nothing but vanity under the sun. This view is absurd, of course. This is God's world, so nothing can be meaningless. All things hold together in Christ. If you are in Christ, then look and see that there is joy under the Son. God has given His law and His prophets, not as a means of our justification and salvation, but as a guide in living for His glory. Obedience to the Lord remains the pathway to blessing and joy. The pattern follows redemptive history. Israel was created in the darkness of the first Passover, and on this night, the whole process is being reversed. Israel is undoing herself on this night, in a great anti-Passover. The religious leaders are turning Passover inside-out: in the first Passover/Exodus event, the morning found Israel delivered from a defeated Gentile power; in this Passover/Exodus event, Israel lets herself be reabsorbed into the pagan nations. "We have no king but Caesar". Israel spends this night renouncing the very Lord who delivered them on the night of Passover. When Yahweh shows up, Israel puts Him on trial. It demonstrates that He has power to avenge Himself against the powers that oppose Him. In Daniel the phrase "Son of Man" also has a corporate meaning (cf. Dan. 7:13-14, 18, 22). The Son of Man is identical to, or linked with, the saints of the most high, who also receive authority and dominion. If the fall of Jerusalem is a vindication of Jesus, it is also a vindication of His people. It is proof that Jesus is enthroned; and it is proof that His people are enthroned with Him in the heavenly places. One of the central lessons we learn from the fall of Jerusalem is that it is a sign that Jesus is faithful to His Word, and faithful to His people (Leithart). Forty years later, the Romans came in and destroyed the city and the temple. This terminal destruction of Jerusalem is the manifestation of the Son of Man (v.27). By destroying Jerusalem, Jesus proves that He is the rightful heir to God's vineyard, and that He is eager to avenge His bride. He will leave the corpse of the city for the Roman vultures to finish off (v.28). We must see to it that we are not guilty of these same sins and abominations; we must give our Lord the worship He deserves, in the manner He enjoys. His life very literally the hinge of world history. As His earthly ministry draws to a close on Tuesday of Holy Week, the border between one age and another is becoming very thin. The generation that killed Jesus is going to continue carrying out their bloodlust on His messengers until their chalice is full. When their iniquity is complete, judgment from heaven is visited on that generation. These days of vengeance (Luke 21:22) mark the vindication of Christ's ministry, the destruction of His accusers, and the glorious sunrise of the new covenant after the end of that age. Echoes of the fall persist even now as the new covenant age advances, but no matter the duration or intensity of our suffering, Jesus's instructions are timeless. Do not be led astray. Stand firm. Persevere. If God gave a law which provided hope that life could indeed continue for a dying, childless man, hope that his name would live on, does that not itself demonstrate that God is a God of resurrection, a God of the living and not of the dead? When God binds Himself to Moses, He says that He remains bound to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob even centuries after their deaths. He is a God who is faithful unto death, and faithful yet again after death. Even this great obstacle to our eternal joy can never have the last word. The Sadducees do not understand the faithfulness nor the power of God. Christian, your charge is to remember that the gospel of grace does not destroy nature, but restores and perfects it. In this age we continue to taste death and to lay loved ones in the ground like a seed (1 Cor. 15:36, 37), but we do so in the great hope that they and we will come back out of the grave, just as Jesus did, having finally become fully glorified men and women. The Lord makes David blameless and equips him with strength (v.32) so that his feet do not slip (v.36). God's will is to be done on earth as it is in heaven, which means that we too need to live according to the righteousness which God has gifted us. This is the cultural mandate which starts in the garden, is strengthened in the Great Commission, and which carries on until Christ returns to fully consummate this mission. Like the blind men, we must come to the Son of David for mercy; to seek what only He can offer. Elsewhere He has told us that apart from the rebirth, we can't even see the kingdom of God (John 3:3); yet when He gives sight, we are not only given the kingdom, but many other gifts added to it (Matt. 6:33). The Lord Jesus's teaching is pro-creational in every sense. Children are a blessing. Children are an inheritance. Children are the fruitful crown of the woman's womb, and the continuation of a man's dominion after his strength is gone. When others see a nuisance, Christ sees a blessed hope. Jesus, the unmarried man, is here surrounded by His children, blessing them like Jacob before He departs in death. The blessing of these children is not automatic, however; it is a stewardship. Children are to be instructed to discover the delight in God's law and in His gospel. He has just told us how the Shepherd is so concerned for one straying sheep that He will leave the ninety-nine to go pursue it. God's way of achieving restoration runs contrary to the sentimental and therapeutic sensibilities of our age. But it is Christ, not man, who is building His church, so we must follow the instructions we are given instead of presume to create our own. We have seen a concern for correction but also for gentleness. There are steps of increasing seriousness as open sin is rooted from the camp, but each step is committed to using as little force as possible. The need to increase the pressure lies with the offender and not the offended; impenitence leads to further measures but softness of heart and repentance leads to restoration and reconciliation. The charge for each one of us is to have the gracious courage to live up to Jesus's words. Let us not presume to be sheep who are wiser than the Shepherd. This Fatherly providence is so detailed that it is even concerned with placing this woman at the feet of Jesus in the same place where another woman was placed at the feet of Elijah. She knows that there is no wasted detail in God's design, and that there is no less mercy left over for one just because others have received mercy first. Even the dogs have enough from the children's food. So the charge is this – remember that there is no end to God's storehouse. God made both church and state to function alongside and in harmony with each other, both under His sovereign authority. In order for us to enjoy the blessing of a calm and peaceful social order, we will need the courage of a clear conscience. This will not and cannot happen apart from the gospel of Jesus Christ. The blessing of a free and stable state has only come when the church has taken her prophetic role seriously. He is happy to justify generational insiders and longtime outsiders; but regardless of which group you come from, He will only do it one way. The opposition Jesus faced and his impending rejection as Messiah by the Jewish leadership runs counter to the expectations most Jews had of the Messiah and his ministry. But Matthew wants to make clear to his primarily Jewish audience that this is all according to plan. Isaiah had prophesied centuries earlier, describing what the Servant of the Lord would be like and what he would do. He would not be quarrelsome or forcefully assert himself, instead he would care for the broken and the weak. And even though Jesus was not heard by his own people, his proclamation of justice is a message of hope to the nations. In the new covenant, Christ becomes the new Adam in the new garden and initiates the new creation with His resurrection on the first day of the week. The day has moved but so far from destroying the old principles, a Lord's Day Sabbath fulfills and explains the old principles. We now work out of our rest instead of for it. Psalm 15 provides a list of characteristics that would be found in a person qualified to be in the presence of the Lord. It covers many aspects of life including one's conduct, conversation, commitments, constancy, and conscience; all of which we fall short of on a regular basis and thus are disqualified from communing with God. Yet if you are in Christ, these requirements have been fulfilled in Him. Through His work we can approach God and look forward to dwelling in heaven one day. If you are living in the hope of the gospel, these are traits that should be growing in you by the power of the Spirit and His work of sanctification. He is our remedy for fear in the midst of a tumultuous world, not just in general hardships, but specifically amidst the nations' rebellion against God and his anointed king. But God is not just our safe haven, the Lord is a warrior who fights for his people and makes peace on the earth by defeating his enemies. Nothing already made was up to this high and honourable calling, and so the situation called for a fresh creation from God. God made the man for dominion, and next He makes the woman for the man. Together, their task becomes both possible and rewarding. The woman is the glory of the man, which means she is the glory of the glory. She is the crowning jewel, the finishing touch, the magnum opus of creation. Her beauty, her diligence, and her tenderness ideally suit her for her calling to fill, create, nurture, and beautify. As she does this, she gains the love and the trust of her husband, her children, her church, and her community. The glory she has received from on high fills creation such that it redounds back to God many times over. A godly woman is a force multiplier. Women, what is God calling you to this week? Do you need to put your phone down to be more intentional with your little ones? Do you need to drop something else that is a distraction from your central calling? How can you use your glory to equip your husband to excel at his calling? Can you see the glory in the mundane task of sending little eternal people out into the world? Are there places outside your home that could be blessed by your gifts? You were made for fullness and beauty.
