Happily Ever After, If . . .

We're familiar with the line, "they lived happily ever after." It marks a good end to a good story. That is not how the book of Leviticus ends because Leviticus is not the end of the story. But it does point us there. Leviticus 26 presents us with a series of blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. Most of the chapter is cursings, an ominous note of expectation that this covenant will not bring about the intimacy of life with the Lord that we have longed for since the garden.

Some of us are into restoration projects, whether it's houses, cars, or a set of old toy trains. We put our heart and soul into these projects to bring them to life. The Lord is about a restoration project, and he is putting his heart and soul into it. It's us. That's the message of Leviticus 25 and the Lord's instructions for Israel concerning their celebration of the year of Jubilee.

If the lights are on, someone might be home. If the lights are on and food is on the table, then someone is definitely home. Leviticus chapter 24 is the heart of the book of Leviticus and the goal toward which the entire book has been leading us. Here we find a picture of the light of God's lamp shining on twelve loaves of bread continually in God's holy place. In this unassuming picture we have an astounding invitation.

Time to Feast

You can learn a lot about a person by looking at their calendar, who they are with, how they spend their time, etc. The same is true for groups and nations. A nation's national calendar, with its special occasions and holidays, tells a story. Special occasions in our own country such as July 4, Thanksgiving, and Memorial Day, remind us where we have been as a nation and who we are as a people. Israel's calendar did the same. In this sermon we consider the various feasts that Israel participated in and what these have to do with our life together as the church.

God's Plan for His Priests

There's a lot about priests in the Bible. But we don't talk much about them. We know that Jesus is our high priest. We understand that he fulfills the expectations of the old covenant priesthood. But what does it mean that the church is a royal priesthood? And what can Leviticus 21–22 teach us about our role as such? Why did God prohibit his priests from mourning the deaths of their extended family members? Why couldn't deformed priests serve in the tabernacle? Listen in as we explore God's plan for his priests.

Under the old covenant the Lord required the punishment of death for various sexual sins amog his people. This was not a sanitary process, but involved stoning and in some cases burning the bodies afterward. What would God have us to learn and to do from a text like this? Lnisten in to this sermon from Leviticus 20 and find out.

Leviticus 19 includes the most quoted verse in the New Testament: "you shall love your neighbor as yourself" (19:18). It also includes a command not to breed cattle with different kinds of cattle, sow two kinds of seed in a field, and wear garments of cloth made of two kinds of material" (19:19). In fact, these two verses sit right alongside one another. What does Leviticus 19 say and what does it have to do with us exactly?

Holy Sexuality

Leviticus 18 is one of those chapters that can be embarrassing to read out loud if you're not alone. In this sermon we're going to read it out loud, all together. This is a chapter filled with prohibitions concerning sex, commands for the good of God's people, and most importantly for our fellowship with him. In many ways this chapter is straightforward. But there is nevertheless some difficult interpretive work to do in order to discern precisely what God requires of us under the new covenant and how we can obey when Israel didn't. Listen in and join us for a word from God on holy sexuality.

There is Life in the Blood

Christians talk about blood all the time. We even sing about it. No one else does that. Why do we do that? We know that Jesus' blood is precious, but why? We are starting into the second half of the book of Leviticus. So far, blood has been strangely both dangerous, separating us from God, and life-giving, bringing us to God. In this sermon we come to Leviticus 17, perhaps the most important chapter in all the Bible for understanding precisely why blood is precious to Christians.

Leviticus 16 represents the high point of the book of Leviticus and of the first five books of the Bible. In fact, it is the very center of the first five books of the Bible and that's on purpose. This is the most holy day and the day of God's greatest expression of mercy.

Leviticus 12–15 are some of the strangest chapters in the Bible. Here we have laws about menstrual cycles, various skin diseases, and bodily discharges. Israelites ruled unclean could not approach the presence of God. Why not? What was the Lord's intention through these ancient and seemingly cruel laws? And what does all of this have to do with the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ? Listen in to find out.

The book of Leviticus teaches us about what it takes to bring God and humanity together. Light destroys darkness and God's holiness destroys sinners. But as we've learned, if we come to God with a holy sacrifice through a holy priest we can live with him. And then there is Leviticus chapter 11. Listen in and ponder what God might be teaching the people of Israel and us about our need for the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.

Strange fire and the death of two priests named Nadab and Abihu. What does this have to do with the death of Christ? On Good Friday we continue our series through the book of Leviticus, now in chapter 10. We've learned about the sacrifices God requires for fellowship with him and about the priesthood he sets apart to mediate our relationship. In Leviticus 9 the Lord appeared. Like a consuming fire he burned up the burnt offering on the altar. For the first time, the Lord dwelled among his people since Eden.

How can we know abundant life with God in his presence forever? Leviticus 1–7 gave us the beginning of God's answer to that question: we need sacrifice. Leviticus 8 continues with another stage in God's plan: we need a priesthood. We need a hard-reset on the idea of a priest, an essential part of God's salvation plan and yet, for a variety of reasons, a confusing role.

Offerings for Us

We have a problem. Everyone knows that much. But humans do not agree on what that problem is or who that problem is with. According to Scripture we have a problem of forgiveness. We have offended a holy God and are guilty before him as sinners. This is the central problem that drives the Bible's story of which Levitucus plays a central part. WIth this sermon we come to another difficult stretch of material, yet the heart of the matter is this: the Lord deals graciously with his offenders. Ludicrous grace, it has been called.

Offerings for the Lord

Leviticus gets off to what feels like a slow start with instructions for five different offerings. Why so many offerings? How are they alike and how are they different? What help are these ancient rituals for my present-day walk with the Lord and for our communion as a church? In this sermon we will reflect on the first three of these offerings: the burnt offering, the grain offering, and the peace offering.

Life. Other ideas come to mind when we think of Leviticus: rock badgers, laws about fabric, cloven foot animals, and many things that might disturb you if I mentioned them here. What do these have to do with our relationship with God? What do these have to do with life, even abundant life with God? Listen in and find out as we explore the first two verses of Leviticus.
