The Clarity that Coronation Brings

When Christ took the Throne, there was a moment in heaven of unique tension, and most especially in the mind and heart of John who seeing that there was none to open the scrolls began to weep for there was in his mind a dilemma as the plan of God could not be carried out until the scroll problem was solved. Christ solved this problem through his death, burial, and resurrection, and as He took the throne He did so as one having been given the responsibility and authority to carry out the plan outlined in that scroll. Much of revelation is given over to the reading of what lies within it, and so there is now, in the age of Christ ascension to the Throne of Heaven and Earth a clarity that the Messiah alone can bring, as Redeemer, as Prophet, Priest, and King. What then does Christ's ascension mean for the work of the Kingdom, our lives, our homes, and everything to which we can put our hand?

What we find at the end of Revelation, part of the epilogue of the book is a statement that should be for us, a resounding encouragement and warning, that the Word of God can and ought to be believed upon and trust, and also not edited to fit a narrative or system other than the one which God has given to us, that we might know how to glorify and enjoy Him. God takes most seriously the content of His Word, being His perfect revelation of His purpose and plan for those to whom the Word if given, such that whether you add (18) or subtract (19), you are condemned unto curse and having your name taken away from His book of life. As a final expression of who is sealed in Christ, a dweller in the city, and whose name is included in the Lamb's book of life, it is those who take God at His Word.

In light of all that we have seen and heard, in light of all that the Lord Jesus Christ has told us, and our brother, John the Apostle has declared what then is to be our response? Last week we looked for at the Gospel of that brings warning and encouragement depending on which side of the walls of the City of God you find yourself. To those who dwell within, hold fast to the true confession and live in light of your being sealed and obey the One who is coming with reward. To those who are unfit, unwashed, unresponsive to the call to repentance, there is only misery and death that lay outside the walls. Right now, even now, the invitation is emphasized even more such that the Spirit and the Church, who is the Bride of Christ both call those who have not yet drunk, to drink and to do so freely - such is the manifest glory and extraordinary grace of God.

Your Reward is Coming

The depth of the rebellion and idolatry of Israel is manifestly exhibited here in Revelation, where we find a warning given to a people who have no hope to respond in repentance. In fact the warning, though not expressed in half-hearted fashion is more a full throated condemnation against the city that rejected the Messiah. More than a condemnation we also find the exhortation to those who are righteous to continue to walk in righteousness for God will bring with Him reward, in addition to just desserts. To the obedient a promise of peaceful dwelling, to the rebellious the promise of a life banished to the place where the preserve, the liar, the idolaters dwell - outside. Today if you hear the warning, do not harden your heart, for the day is coming when the sheep and goats, the wheat and tares will be divided for eternity. Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.

We are reminded of what John has already written concerning the nearness of Christ's coming in judgment against the city of Jerusalem, the city wherein He was crucified, having been rejected and sentenced to death by those who rejected Him as the Messiah. What Christ has to say is faithful, it is true, and His words are to be the very foundation upon which we build our lives, shape our action, and establish our hope.

This morning John describes for us, the great River of Life, that proceeds from the throne of God and the Throne of the Lamb into all the Earth, whereby God's covenant promises, and grace bring forth life where there was once only death. This the water that brings healing and salvation to the valley of dry bones, issuing forth from the well of whom Christ is the spring and when we come to Him, drink from Him, believe upon Him, the Spirit of God wells up within us, filling up and running down. Such are the people named and sealed by the Lord, full of life, full of light, having been brought into God's presence in salvation.

Having examined the people of God, who are made new in Christ Jesus, by His work of reconciliation will bring all men through the process not only of justification, of adoption, and sanctification, but also that fulfilling act of glorification, wherein all who are in Christ Jesus will be fully redeemed, body and soul, never to feel the effects of sin again, comforted, exalted, dressed in the imperishable garment. John's vision of the heavenly city, coming to earth, perfect in righteousness and exalted in glory, we now see the characteristics of this city where God will dwell with men in the age that is to come.

Oh the glories that await those who have devoted themselves even to the point of pain, sorrow, tears, suffering, and horror for the sake of the coming kingdom and peace of Christ Jesus. For those who share in the child pangs of alienation from that which will soon pass away, will delight in the full flowering of all of the Father's promises made good in Christ Jesus. For the faithful shall receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and a dwelling place with Christ forever (3). Christ Himself shall put an end to our mourning (4), and all that is not done for His honor and glory, and according to His Word shall pass away (4). Even as Christ has made men new, He will consummate that work as we read in verses six through eight. One day Christ will right all wrongs, and He will bring both full salvation and full condemnation, as the start to the New Heavens and Earth.

Christ is even now in the process of making all things new. A newness that comes forth from His work of reconciling heaven and earth, men and all that He has made unto Himself. Christ is the Firstborn, and He has in His resurrection inaugurated the process that will reach its full and complete culmination or consummation when Christ comes again in glory to judge both the living and the dead on the last day of this age. The New Heavens and New Earth has already broken through, and with it the glories of Christ's work manifested by the Spirit throughout the earth (Isaiah 65-66). The New Heavens and New Earth also has yet to come in full, when Christ will cast away all that does not belong to the kingdom of redemption, all that is wicked, all that is not done by Word and for His glory.

There stands at the end of all time, the time given to men to live between the first and second advent of Christ's coming, the time given to the saints of God to build a glorious cathedral of Christendom that will be built and will stand as a testimony of Christ's exaltation in resurrection and ascension, a Throne, a white Throne, a Throne of judgment where the deeds of all men will be counted against the righteous revelation of God. Even now what do you believe, what are you doing, in whom is your life hidden as you prepare for that day?

One final enemy will remain at the end of this age, one enemy that only Christ can and has promised to bring to utter destruction, ruin, and then banished for all eternity it that pit of brimstone and fire. That enemy is the one mentioned here, Satan. Again, when we come to a text in Revelation there are some questions we need to ask of it, and also lean upon the answers that I have already answered concerning past verses. When is Satan loosed, what will be the fall out of him being loosed, and what else takes place in that time? Let us look at those questions. In addition to those questions there is also a very real and practical question for all believers: What is to come for God's people in the future? What does the future hold for those who know and love Christ and are invested in His kingdom? That is what we examine this morning.

This morning the subject shifts, for us, from the nature of the millennium and the binding of Satan, to the significance and event of the resurrection and what John is speaking of when he speaks the resurrection as it applies, namely to what looks like two distinct groups in the verses 4-6. Those who experience resurrection unto life with the Redeemer of sinners, and those who are raised unto everlasting judgment. What are these resurrections and what role, even now, do the saints possess until the coming of Christ Jesus? Praise be to God that there is life beyond the grave, that there is purpose beyond the flesh, that there is an identity that is grounded upon God's magnificent work of Creation

It must be said from the outset that the chapter before us, Ch. 20, is a chapter over which there is no small amount of debate as to its meaning and when and how, as a prophetic word, it has been or will be fulfilled. This chapter, more than any other is a kind of summation of the whole of revelation and is particular point wherein eschatological positions are taken and reinforced. Let us not be thwarted however by disagreement, for this is not the only passage of Scripture over which students of the Bible differ, for they are many and that is testimony not to the lack of perspicuity or clarity of Scripture, but the weakness of men and our limitation of knowledge of those things are not fully made known to us.

The Gospel Rides Forth

There two things we see this morning from John's apocalyptic letter to the churches in Asia Minor: that Christ rides forth into battle through the work of the Church on earth, and He will rule nations through the means which He has set up through the power and glory of His Word and Spirit. Second, through the establishment of the glory of His name, in this age we call the millennia, Satan and His forces will be defeated such that the final enemy to be destroyed, at the time of Christ's second coming is death itself. Until then the kings and powers of earth, even outposts and expressions of Satan's remaining power shall be defeated through the Church marching forth throughout all the earth. Like leaven, the truth and power of the Resurrection shall infiltrate every evil stronghold which Satan and men have erected, yet are powerless to prevent the destruction of by Christ and His army of saints.

This morning we continue through a most glorious scene in which the saints of God, being both bride, guest, and adorned in the righteousness of Christ and their own righteous deeds are gathered around the Throne for a wedding. The wedding has come, the bride is ready, the old bride has been cast aside, for her adulterous ways, and it is time to feast with the Redeemer. A celebration and feast so extraordinary, John looses his strength in awe of it. How glorious the sights of our Redeemers work, how grandiose and epic is the extent of His covenant faithfulness to His people. Let us glimpse this scene of exalted praise and worship the Lord together!

"After these things…" John writes these words, having received them from the Lord, carried away on the Lord's Day, that the churches of Asia Minor and in every age might know that Christ reigns upon the throne of heaven and earth, that His rule is secure and that He has flung wide the gates of heaven, even as the nations have been grafted in, the new bride is brought forward and the old bride is cast off into outer darkness, through visible judgment as Jerusalem is destroyed by the hands of another evil nation, Rome. Revelation recounts for us the breadth and depth of Christ's grace and judgment, His plan and purpose for this world, and what we can expect for the church in this age and the next. The worship of the saints in heaven and on earth is always a response to the mighty work of the Godhead to bring about salvation and glory to the family of Christ, bought, strengthened, and enlarged by His power.

"You become what you behold"… this timeless principle, is one that represents the covenantal nature with which Go relates to all men, it communicates the truth that men are made by God, and therefore made for worship, and drawing near to one that is higher than they, than you, than I. Revelation shows us in vivid imagery that everyone bears a name, either that of Christ or the Beast, and that the one to whom your covenantally united shapes your eternal and even at times temporary future. Here the way in which John conveys idolatry verses true God-fearing religion is by what you mourn when it goes away - do you worship wealth wickedly or do you worship and rejoice in the Christ's Lordship more clearly manifested, even in the destruction of that stuff behind which men hide or build their lives upon.

Jerusalem stands, not as an example of the glory and beauty that God desires to dress His people in, but that of a harlot who has clothed herself in the fornications of idolatry and covenant infidelity. She has made herself wretched, wicked, and deserving of judgment. She has denied her Husband, her Redeemer, the One who came to take away her sins, and for her rejection, the loss of mediation and grace. She, who was to be a blessing to the nations, had become one who has brought blindness. She, who was to be a guide in righteousness, to righteousness, instead became one who lead others to destruction. She sought to be queen, without the King, sought wealth apart from the One who owns all things, and for her rebellion the full measure of Divine wrath. Come away and see her sin, and embrace Christ, the only Redeemer and King.

Where Jerusalem, and the leaders of Israel led - crying out concerning the Messiah who had come to them, for their salvation, "crucify him" (Mk. 15:13, 14, 20) - Rome would follow. Now to be sure Herod sought to put to death the Messiah, thinking that he would cause a political uprising, the Jews rejected Jesus because He claimed to be the Messiah. Both Jerusalem and Rome were wrong, wicked, anti-Christ in their response to the heavenly King, come to earth. They not only put Christ to death, but persecuted His disciples, the Apostles, and so many in the early church. For their beastly behavior, they would judged, and Christ wanted to convey their miserable end to the early church, through John so that they might have hope that only Christ's kingdom endures forever

The Old Jerusalem is not merely passing away, it is being brought to utter ruin by the One who the inhabitants of that city rejected, the One who came with salvation in His hands, Hosanna, the Lord and heaven and earth. Though He came to His own, His own did not receive Him, and for their rejection they inherited judgment. The reason for their rejection is made clear and greatly amplified in the vision that John has in Revelation 17. The reason the Jews rejected Christ, and Christ subsequently judged them, was that they had broken covenant with Christ and bound themselves to Rome (3-4), they persecuted the true Church (6), and had chosen the finer of pagan gods, of Satan, to the gifts the Bridegroom had prepared for His bride. For her betrayal, the woman who rode the beast, astride that wretched monster, would find herself riding it all the way to perdition (17:11).

The final bowl, the final element in Christ's wrath poured out upon Jerusalem, a city divided by judgment, experiencing the wrath of God for their rejection of the Messiah, for the forgiveness of their sins, and so instead of mercy, judgment and condemnation. God will bring upon those who deny the Messiah, those nearest to the promise indeed, judgment for their rejection. Plagues here that reveal the clarity and particularity of Christ's judgment, plagues like those which fell upon Egypt, and a cruse of disunity not unlike that which felt upon Babel. How Jerusalem had fallen, now counted among the wretched judged among the men of earth.

We continue through the bowls of God's total destruction, poured out on Jerusalem for her high-handed sins against God, and their rejection of redemption in the Messiah. Sin without reconciliation results in disaster. The plagues that we find in the bowls are the inversion of what men might expect from the Holy of Holies, and instead of grace and restoration being poured out, it is judgment and calamity upon Israel. They had become like Egypt, only worse, having rejected the clear Word of God, killing the prophets, chief among them Christ, and for their idolatry and blasphemy. Christ is the One who brings war against Jerusalem, Armageddon.

The prelude, which we have just examined last week, to the seven bowls or chalices of Christ's wrath against the nation of Israel, Jerusalem, and the Temple, conveys a horrific turn and nightmare situation in which the glory of God, issuing forth from the Holy of Holies (15:5) was not for the purpose of grace and salvation, but judgment and condemnation. The temple was closed off, as an act of judgment, and to indicate that the temple in Jerusalem was no longer the place where men and God would meet together. To Christ the nations come, and this gospel was proclaimed by Moses and the prophets, those whom the Jews killed, this being the great offense of the nation, and in this no other nation was like Israel - the putting to death the very ones who brought glad tidings of good news, chiefly the Son of God.

It is not just mercy that comes forth from the holiest of places, that place where the Risen and Ascending King of heaven and earth reigns. While seated upon the throne, Christ rules over all that is seen and unseen, from the smallest creepy crawly to the massive roaring stars radiating light and heat. There is nothing over which Christ cannot say, "this is mine." Immensity and eternity belong to Him, and for this reason He is also Judge of heaven and earth. Here in Revelation 15, we see Christ operating as Judge upon those who denied Him worship, allegiance, praise. From that place of glory, Christ issues forth decrees not of peace and comfort, but wrath and terror. The picture which John paints is one of the horror of judgment coming forth from that place where mercy ought to flow, and the absolute horror of the shutting off of mercy when time has run out.

The songs of the saints are not always "happy" and the themes that the songs of the saints take are not always about something that can be called universally "good." Revelation chronicles for us not only a tale of glorious salvation, connected to the resurrection of Christ, but also judgment upon those who reject the Messiah and His salvation. Christ's Kingly work is displayed both in grace and condemnation. Here John refers to the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, and its description of both judgment and mercy, of God's will being carried out unto the destruction of Jerusalem and the raising up of the New Jerusalem in His body, blood, and resurrection. The song of the victorious, made possible by the victory of Christ over death and the devil, is sung for their own victory despite suffering death on behalf of Christ, for they have been delivered. This song also includes the theme of Christ's judgment poured out upon those who have rejected the Messiah.

Gospel which tells of two ways, the way of grace and the way of judgment, the way of peace and they way of misery. The angels have made it clear, and their message is One that the Church, the household of faith is to take seriously. For the saints of God there is not only everlasting hope and security in the Gospel of Christ for their souls, but even their labors go with them and are used by Christ to further His glory and salvation on earth. In addition we find two mighty acts of Christ, the wielder of the sickle of grace and judgment, one reaping to bring in the harvest of the saints, the other an act of judgment whereby he gathers for judgment the nation who betrayed His mercy.

To Hell with Rebellion

This section of Revelation presents us with two great powers, there is the power of the dragon and those who ally themselves with him, the beasts, and those who bear the name of the beast; and there is also Christ, the Lamb, and those who trust in Him, who have heard the Gospel, respond in faith, and bear the Name of the Father. To preach the Gospel is to reveal that there are two ways to go, two ways which you can go, there is the way of Christ and the Gospel, and there is the way of the lies, deceit, and the dragon. The false teachers of Israel show themselves to be hellish in their doctrine and intent, they are Babylon, they serve not Christ but the Devil. Their reward is not everlasting life, but torment, pain, and the hell of their own making. The vision of Christ here adds to our understand of Him, not merely to be a good and faithful Shepherd, but also a just and terrifying Judge. Seek salvation while it may be found, lest you perish like Babylon.

An Everlasting Gospel

The Gospel of Christ is not the invention of any man, it does not come from this earth, and it is not subject to change. Rather it comes from above, that heavenly message of hope, that Christ Jesus has come into the world to save sinners. Let us then marvel at the goodness of God, His faithfulness to men, and the ever expanding, ever radiating, ever transforming Word of God. For what else is there, what else do we have, if we do not have this?

Where Everybody Has a Name

Everyone who has ever lived, worships someone or something. Worship is in our bones, it's in our souls, and worship is an inescapable reality. This is because each and every one of us has buried deep within our souls a hardwired craving to give our hearts and lives to something or someone that will grant us satisfaction and sanctification. We are, each and every one of us deeply and inescapably religious, and we therefore bear the name or names of what we worship, of what we devote our lives to, of what everything is centered around. There are but two names, two marks that men wear and those two names are either "Christ" or "Beast." We are either devoted to the One who is able to save, or the one who will drag your souls to the pit. For those who bear the name of Christ Jesus know this, that even now you are with the Godhead, sealed not only here on earth, but present with the Lord, in spiritual-union in heaven and you can never be separated from Him. Nothing in heaven or on earth can separate us from Him and in Him we worship ever near, and labor without fear for in Him we will never be moved.

As John writes to the early Church, those saints who were at that time suffering much for holding fast to the Name of Jesus, and they, like he, were watched closely by Rome. Much of the symbolism that John used to communicate the truths of Christ's rule and reign on earth and the subsequent effect that rule and reign would have on the empires of earth was incorporated as a means of a code to hide the true meaning so that his letter might be sent out and not kept by his captors. How then would first century Christian decode these letters? Well the first technique was to be a good student of the other sections of biblical apocalyptic literature (Daniel, Ezekiel, Zechariah, etc.) Christ would conquer the beast, Rome, all those who helped the beast, the false Jewish prophets of John's day, and the one known as 666. Decoding this, decoding Revelation, will help us interpret more accurately the meaning, but also live more faithfully in this world where Christ reigns as King.

The Roman Beast

Nations come and nations go, and in the first age of the Church of Jesus Christ the nation of Rome arose from the sea of the Gentiles, becoming an instrument in the hands of Satan to bring persecution against the Church. Rome would in the reigns of the seven emperors beginning with Julius Caesar call its citizens to worship the emperor, demanding primary allegiance to the Roman state above all other gods. How can the Christian do this who rightly confesses "no god save Christ, no master except Jesus." The beast asks for much, and as a tool of the Dragon, Satan himself, the beast rules in order to call the saints away from their reasonable, faithful, and kingdom-building service to their Redeemer. Do not miss the plot, and do not reject the call to faithfulness to the One who has banished the dragon, and is even now, even in the midst of great trial and suffering, building a kingdom that cannot be shaken through you and me.

More conflict for us to observe this morning as we continue to study the drama that unfolds between the woman, the dragon, and the child. If last week served as some encouragement to you, and I hope it did, knowing that Satan has not and cannot thwart the success of the mission of the Son of God, the child, then this week we see even better news concerning the horrifying creature and his coming demise. Even now the great enemy of the Church has been thrown down, he is still dangerous, but the realms in which we once lurked has been shut off, and even now he awaits the day of his final judgment. His end is coming, and saints of God, Satan knows the end (12)… do you?

This morning we get at least ankle deep into the language and figures that are familiar to many of us when we think of Revelation and the terrifying visions of the Apostle. Despite the terror of it all, Christ is revealing things that are to give the Church hope, illustrating His glory, power, and presence over all things. Christ is King and with His transcendent power comes a new age of righteous power at work resulting in the downfall of the enemy of the Church, as well as the Church's expansion throughout the whole world. The Church has brought forth the Messiah, according to the Father's promise, and He has crushed and will contiunct to conquer every corner where Satan once laid claim.

The Church Goes Global

Having reached the conclusion of the second interlude (10:1-11:14), much like the first (7:1-17), we are given a behind the scenes glimpse into the manner in which Christ's conduct and events in heaven relate to the events of earth. These interludes are essential for us if we are to understand that there is not only linkage between heaven and earth, between what is unseen and what is seen, but to understand Christ and the Church - past, present, and future. As we come to the seventh trumpet we find a description of the new order of things, even as the Temple in Jerusalem, along with that city is brought to destruction. Christ is making it abundantly clear, that there is no longer one kingdom, one city, one place, but the kingdoms of this earth shall become the kingdom of our God.

Those whom Christ has called, throughout the length of church history, reaching back to Moses and Elijah all spoke with a singular voice and theme - in the Messiah alone can salvation be found. The way to understand what God was doing was to take heed, listen, and obey all that H He commanded. Yet Israel did not believe, they did not heed the warnings, but rather silenced the prophets of God in order to pursue their own idolatrous ends without torment from the truth. They embraced the darkness and so rejected the Light when He appeared. Yet the prophets, the Prophet, and the Word cannot be kept hidden, and no matter you celebrate lies the Word of God will go forth, it will bring forth judgment, it will bring forth salvation, and Christ will be glorified throughout the whole earth.

Witnesses to Destruction

In order for a house to be renovated it is not just necessary that new things be updated or installed but some things have to come out and some things must be torn down. In order to plant a garden it is not only necessary that what is good is out into the earth, but that which has grown wild and which might threaten the new growth must be torn up by its roots. As Christ prophesied concerning Himself, "tear down this temple and in three days I will raise it up," so too does Christ here tell of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, laying waste to that which was no longer needed, a final judgment upon the people who rejected Him. In this text we find the marking of that which will be destroyed and the prophets who told of such destruction, prophets who were ignored, persecuted, even put to death. Within the boundaries of redemptive history, God never does a thing which He does not interpret Himself, so that we might see and hear and so believe that He is at work, and that His work is good and furthers His own kingdom.

Having seen and heard the Risen and Reigning Messiah, standing upon the earth, uniting Jew and Gentile by His matchless sacrifice, John proclaims that which he is given to the church to know concerning the plan of God for the Church. This mystery which Christ has revealed is that He is Lord of both Jew and Gentile, and His work of redemption, the shedding of His own blood unites all men under One banner, that banner of Christ for Sinners. This "mystery of God" now "finished" or fulfilled was to be taken by John, and others to all "peoples, nations, tongues, and kings." Thus we are given a reminder of who we are to called to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the conquering of the nations, according to Christ's great commission. Because Christ stands upon the earth, the mission of the Church will succeed to both Jew and Gentile.

Returning to the book of Revelation, we come to the a "mighty angel," whose description is not unlike that in Revelation 1:15-17, where the Lord Jesus Christ is introduced. He bore in His hand a little book, small enough even for John to eat, yet is commanded to seal up the utterances of the Lord, to be opened at another time. Christ is sovereign over all things, the history of men, and the unfolding of the things of heaven and earth, of Jew and Gentile. Truly all exist to bring Him glory. There is however something that would be fulfilled without delay and that was the uniting of Jew and Gentile under one gracious banner of the Gospel, this new era being ushered in through the destruction the Temple. Gentile would not need to become Jew, but all men new in Christ Jesus.

We come this week to the sixth angel, the sixth trumpet/the second woe. It commences with a voice from the altar and calls for the releasing of four angels who had previously been held back, now let loose to bring destruction. Let us not be confused by bad teaching, or bewitched by a world that does not wish to discuss consequences for sin. These woes have weight, they possess horror, for to reject the mercy that comes by embracing the Messiah, is to welcome fire and brimstone, it is to welcome unbridled judgment. The terror of violence against judgment is one things, but the true horror is when men, refusing to see embrace refuse to repent and instead cling to the horrors of the pit and call them good.

Destruction through internal corruption and moral erosion. This is what the 5th Trumpet, the 1st Woe brings as Christ reigns down covenant cursing upon those who would rather have the company of demons than the freedom that Christ brings. It is one or the other, and the promise of enmity means that you are either of the Seed or of the Serpent, and this enmity means that there will be an enduring battle until the end of the age, between the Righteous One, and His children, and the Devil and those who reject the Messiah. This battle is real, and though it is between unseen principates and powers, its battleground is found to the the souls of men and their various government and corporations. Here in the 5th Trumpet Christ unleashes demons upon the once-great-city, and the result is nothing short of shocking, disgusting, and what happens when you blaspheme the Holy Spirit.

As we continue through this book which records the mighty acts of Christ Jesus, having taken the Throne of Heaven and Earth, ruling according to the Crown bestowed upon Him by the Father for His work of redeeming all things through His death and resurrection. The Cross of Christ was the capstone of His humiliation, His taking the Throne that of His exaltation. Christ will rule with equity, all nations, all tribes, all tongues, and it begins here with the household of faith, that rebellious people, who rejecting Christ's offer of salvation. Israel, once freed from Egypt has become the nation that Christ brings war against for their apostasy. Woe to those who hear, who see, yet still reject the Lord of Glory.

The seventh and final seal, opened by Christ, loosed upon the earth by right of His office bearer, as Prophet, Priest, and King. To Christ alone the rule of the seals, the shaking of the four winds of the earth, the judgment of the ungodly, the avenging of those slain for His Namesake, and the hearing of the saints' prayers in glory. This seal, unlike the others that were coupled with light and heat and noise, is one that brought a still hush over the throne room as Christ welcomed the prayers, heard them, and then used them by His sovereign power to bring great glory upon the earth - the glory of the salvation of the nations, that is what our prayers accomplish.

This morning we look a bit closer at those who are gathered around the throne, the "multitude that no one could number," who are worshipping the Lamb, for He washed them and gave them victory in His body and blood. It is important that we not only understand who this number is, being the whole church saved in heaven and being united to Christ are secure, holy, and victorious. What does Christ say is true of us, His beloved, those sealed and saved? We have been washed and brought near, and Christ dwells in our midst.

What a scene we find in Revelation 7, and what glories are to be found around the Throne of Heaven and Earth. The sight is glorious because the King is glorious, arrayed in splendor, majesty, and strength. Surely, it is as we sing - "How sweet and aweful is the place with Christ within the doors, while everlasting love displays the choicest of her stores." The place wherein Christ dwells is full of awe, and the saints who are saved by grace cannot help but respond in heavenly song to the One who has redeemed them. There is but one response to beholding the glory of the Redeemer "Salvation belongs to our God, and Amen!"

At the end of Chapter six a question was put to the reader, by those who would experience the wrath of God poured out upon Jerusalem, "who is able to stand?" Two weeks ago I put that question to you all, and answered that question in this way, "only those who get beneath the blood-stained lintel." That is to say, that only those who are washed but the blood of Christ, the Lamb slain for our salvation, will be able to stand in the judgment. The opening of Chapter seven reinforces not only the idea of the remnant, but the blessing that belongs to those who are the chosen, peculiar, called out people of God, who wear His very Name upon their foreheads. The 144,000 are those who escape the judgment of God, and that number is set by Him, and we are guarded and sealed by Him, that we might be saved. Who can stand, only those united to Christ Jesus.

The call to all men is to repent and be baptized, to kiss the Son lest He be angry with you and you perish in the way. All that men need to know how to be saved from God's wrath has been revealed to them in clear words and gracious overtures found in Scripture. Jerusalem, that city of light and glory, who had received the law and the prophets, the covenantal promises and covenant warnings, and yet she had in the main rejected God's hand of extended mercy manifested in the Messiah made flesh, the suffering One, the dying One, the rejected One. For that rejection Israel was judged while those who embraced Christ were sparred. Do you wish to be saved from judgment, then get beneath the blood of Christ, which alone washes away our sins.

What a gift Christ has given to His people that they might in this life and in the life to come speak, plead, even intercede on behalf of the Church and the furthering of His blessed kingdom. Here in the unfolding of God's revelation to men, John beholds a sight so glorious and even instructive to the Church that we should carry around in our heads and hearts everyday as an inspiration and pattern for our how we feel about the nature of Christ's taking victory, and the habit we are to have in prayer for Christ's victory on earth as it is in heaven. If there is one thing that unites the church militant (on earth) and triumphant (in heaven) it is that we are both people of prayer, committed to filling up the measure of Christ's victory with expressions of power that usher in the dawning of a new age, the age of the Spirit, the age of the Messiah.

Christ has ascended to that place of highest honor, He has taken the Scroll that is His reign and rule upon the earth, He has been worshipped, exalted, and adored for He is the Lamb who was slain. Our King is Our Redeemer, Our King is the Prophet and Priest, our King rules as the One who has fulfilled His part in the Covenant of Redemption and now we look to Him to bring consummation to that which belongs to Him. Now Christ, the King of Heaven and Earth, the One to whom all authority has been given unfolds His plan for the heavens and the earth, as the seals that hold the scroll shut begin to be opened.

If there is anything to sing about it is this, that Christ has taken the seat as Lord, for now the King of heaven of earth, is not just God, but man, a perfect man, the Risen Man, Jesus Christ. Praise be to God that we have such a King.

We see in Chapter Four just how much the scene in the throne room plays out like a worship service, where the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders are engaged in a call and response, led by the cherubim, and then joined into by the elders. This worship is a scene that leads into the next, where the hosts of heaven are "wound up" in order to create a scene not only of tension for what happens for but a moment in Chapter five while the One who was worthy ascended to the Throne Room for His coronation, and subsequent commencement of His reign. What we see, hear, and learn in that pause that moved John from weeping to rejoicing moves us to see that Christ is worthy and what He will do as King of heaven and earth.

What a throne there lies before our very eyes, for even as we read, we behold within our minds eye the glories of the heavenly throne room and the One who sits upon the throne. The glory and majesty of the One seated, who is too glorious for literal words, but what was seen can be said and known in such a way as to give us awe that takes us through the whole of lives with our gaze ever upon the Lord of Glory. There is much heartache and suffering in this life, there is much uncertainty in the particulars of providence, but there is this what we read of and see here that ought to carry us through, through to the Throne, and through it all until we reach that Throne ourselves. _______________________________________________________________________ This video can be found here: https://youtu.be/PgbaBDop_CE

Having concluded the particular addresses to the churches in Asia Minor, Christ continues to reveal the glories of his absolute, cosmic reign, having taken the seat of highest honor, the Throne of Heaven, He now calls John to enter that he might see and deliver to His own Church, the nature, extent, and effect of His rule. Here, before the Throne of Christ, we see the elect gathered to rejoice with the hosts of heaven as those who are victorious in Christ Jesus. Already, we are in Christ Jesus more than conquerors. _______________________________________________________________ This video can be found here: https://youtu.be/QlEsx376hzI

What a picture is painted for us in God's precious Word of the Risen, Ascended, and Reigning Messiah. He, the One whom John beheld, in His glory and power, speaks to His Church and what He has to say is essential for the purpose of walking in faithfulness before Him and the world. Christ wants true devotion from His people and is content with nothing less and will do what is necessary to stir His people to holiness. As Christ confronts the spiritual apathy in the church at Laodicea, He does so that they might repent, and He calls them to repentance because He loves them, and desires to see them transformed by His grace. When Christ speaks, heed, and if he calls for repentance, then by God's grace, repent. ___________________________________________________________________ This video can be found here: https://youtu.be/PmtrYe4miiM

Christ has in His humiliation and exaltation established for Himself a Name, a Name that is above every other name, a Name that is exalted, holy, demanding of our allegiance, and worthy of our trust. Christ, is both Lord and Steward of the House of God, and as such He controls who is and who is not a name-bearer or a temple-dweller. Christ will in this life reveal, even to those who suffer, that all who trust in Him will rule those who have rejected Him. Through Christ we are made more than conquerers. _______________________________________________________________________ This Video can be found here: https://youtu.be/0Yo1_DLMDG0

If we are to live in such a way as to bring glory and honor to our King, then we must not only be people who believe rightly, but also lively rightly. Discipleship is the God-honoring application of what we know about God and what He has commanded us to do. When Christ says I am the Holy One who sees and in conjunction with my sovereign sight my feet shall trample the nations, then know what we must do, whose counsel we must heed, and how we shall then live. Reject the pagan goddess, mortify her bastard children, and do not fall prey to the insidious cult of hedonism. Be holy, dear children of God, and you will be given the nations. ______________________________________________________________________ This video can be found here: https://youtu.be/UDRpXliR-VM

Another letter to another Church and what we find is the blessed and sanctifying connection between something that is true of Christ, our Redeemer and Lord, and the doctrine and behavior of the Church. The formula we see coming into focus is this: Christ is ____ and so we must believe _____ and do _____. This principle is reflected in the question, "What do the Scriptures principally teach?" What man is to believe concerning God and what duty God requires of man. Christ, the Sword-bearer comes to us with His mighty Word and He calls to live in light of what He has said and to the church in Pergamum it is this: flee idolatry and sexual immorality, repent or else Christ Himself will bring the sword against you. __________________________________________________________________ This video can be found here: https://youtu.be/fBkCbLd6oyY

Even as John was instructed to write unto the Church in Ephesus, he was called also to pen a letter, issuing forth from Christ's own mouth, to the Church in Smyrna. A letter to a congregation who had suffered much reproach at the hands of the wicked, who was poor in worldly resources, who would also soon suffer again. The Church is not called to believe that they will not suffer, be tried, tested, and experience the tribulation. No, it is into the mouth of the lion we are sent, by Christ Himself, so that the world might see the only way one might gain his life is to lose it.For in this we look like our Redeemer who also suffered, that the glory and grace of God might be set loose upon the world. ________________________________________________________________________ This video can be found here: https://youtu.be/dVwKmzoxKIs

All of these things they had going for them, yet there was still something lacking. In fact they were lacking the one thing that would incur the discipline of Christ Jesus, the removal of the church from the company of the saints - a lack of love for Christ Himself. Can you believe this? With such evidence of true religion… it goes to show that it is possible to fight against the enemies of God on one hand, and be an enemy of the Lord yourself. This letter (2.1-7) should come like a whistling shot across our proverbial bows if we are seeking refuge in our mere combatting against unorthodoxy and not pursuing Christ with true love and devotion. ________________________________________________________________ This video can be found here: https://youtu.be/x64j5NsTHzI

All Scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness. All of Scripture is to therefore be read and preached, carefully examined and applied. There are some texts however that must be approached and handled with great fear and trembling. Our text this week is such a one. One that comes like hot iron to the touch, like a blazing fire to approach. It bids one welcome, but ever so carefully, like Moses as he approached the burning bush - come close but know where you are standing. Here, in His Word, we come to Christ ablaze, adorned, alive and there is but one thing required of us, to fall down at His feet to tremble, to fear, to worship, to adore. This is the way of the living, to worship the One True Lord, Divine. _______________________________________________________________________ This video can be found here: https://youtu.be/2dRojlHyVzI

The whole of the Church of Christ Jesus is blessed. We are blessed with an enormous list of gifts which Christ has lavished upon us, from those things things that come to us as a result of His salvation, and some things matters of His providence. What John would have us see is that all of that comes from the One who dwells in our very midst, and He speaks from a place of intimate proximity and this is incredible. His glory is not remote, His voice does not speak from a place of distance, but in our very midst. _______________________________________________________________________ This video can be found here: https://youtu.be/orNTxWD8WOY

Every eye will see what John describes as happening here, the question is what is happening and also when was this event in terms of redemptive history and the relation of heavenly activity and earthly reality? The language is a clue and should stir within us reverence and awe as we see our Redeemer take the throne of heaven and earth. Our Redeemer is the King and for this reason His kingship will be made known to all, saint and sinner alike, and all who trust in Him will mourn over their sins, enter into His suffering, and be raised and seated with Him in glory.

This morning we come to the opening greeting that reads rather typically if you are no stranger to New Testament letters. It is a Trinitarian greeting (4-5), from the Father, Son, and Spirit who each have had a role and continue to labor unto the ushering in of the Kingdom of Christ on earth as it is in heaven. This Trinitarian work of redemption results in the blessing of men, described as men being made royal priests who gather around the Throne of Christ, whose central mission is bring glory to Christ. The mission of benediction, blessing men (6a), in turn results in our bringing praise to Christ Jesus, doxology (6b).

Some time ago I presented to you a principal that is an inevitability. I stated "You become what you behold." The psalmist expressed it as you become what you worship. If you worship the True and Living God you live, if you behold that which is an idol, then you forfeit your life. You are what you worship, and we are to behold and listen to the One who sits upon the throne of heaven and earth. John expresses that when we hear, when we read, when we behold Christ in the pages of Scripture we will be blessed, and when we act according to that the world is transformed. It begins in seeing Christ risen, ascended and reigning upon the throne of heaven and earth. Let us behold Him together.

Even as we approach this most glorious book, penned by the Apostle John to the seven young churches listed in later pages and to the church in every age, we approach it with hope, with anticipation, with reverence and awe that God has, is, will continue to unveil His glorious His purposes for the Church and the nations. Even as we sing in the Gloria Patri: "...As it was in the beginning, it is now and ever shall be, world without end, amen, amen" In fact this short and often sung doxology exalts the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit as the One who has operated faithfully to bring about salvation in His Church as the Alpha and Omega, the Eternal Lord who has promised and provided for His bride and body, the Church a gracious ancient foundation and a future hope of glory.
