The Savior's Scribes

Matthew 13 famously introduces what are known as Jesus' "Kingdom" parables. This chapter begins with four public parables, delivered before the crowds. At the conclusion of those parables, the disciples steal away with Jesus and seek an explanation. In that private meeting, Jesus follows His explanation with three more famous parables (The Hidden Treasure, The Pearl of Great Price, and The Dragnet). Jesus follows His teaching with a check on learning: "Have you understood all these things?" They respond with a tentative "yes". In light of their response, Jesus dubs them "scribes" and proceeds to outline the duties and characteristics of scribes by way of one final parable, the parable of the "householder." What do scribes look like? Let's take a look at Jesus' teaching and explore three characteristics of the Savior's scribes.

Automatic Growth

Jesus wanted to grant an assurance to those sowing into the kingdom that there is more than meets the eye. This parable reassures Kingdom sowers that God will inevitably accomplish His Kingdom purposes by His chosen means, the proclamation of the Gospel, but that the results are up to Him. Our text this evening contains three areas of trust, three areas of assurance in God for "automatic" Kingdom growth.

The parable of the children in the marketplace. The parable of the complaining children. The parable of the capricious children. The parable of the disrespectful children. The parable of the hard-to-please children. The parable of the ill-mannered children. The parable of the petulant children. The parable of the rude children. ‌ These titles all aptly and adequately describe this text, but why? Who are the spoiled brats! Take a listen! Audio is a bit low to start, but picks up at around two minutes.

Jesus' Sermon on the Plain closes with an exclamation point. At the close of His famous teaching, our Lord presents the clarion call to come, hear, and do. He exposes authentic disciples and fake disciples via a simple little parable, the parable of the wise and foolish builders. This sobering conclusion to Jesus' sermon offers four hallmarks of genuine disciples:

Jesus utters this tiny parable at the end of a string of teachings as He journeys through the Judean towns and villages on His way to Jerusalem. This pithy, parabolic "what if" is set against the backdrop of a broken Pharisaical linkage of obedience and blessing. In four verses, our Lord cleverly corrects their broken theology in light of God's grace-based economy. This teaching offers three brief lessons:

This parable is referred to as a "negative example story": A "don't be THAT GUY/GAL!" parable. Jesus closes the parable with a nimshal (an explicit statement showing the parable's purpose and intent): "So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God". Jesus illustrates the poverty of laying up treasure for oneself. This message hones in on the parable's negative example to exchange that poverty for a richness toward GOD. What does richness toward GOD look like?

Luke 15 contains three parables. Treating them individually is perfectly fine, but it is important to note that Jesus intentionally lumped them together as one to sketch the character of God through three stories. These three parabolic pictures explain the Lord's passionate pursuit of the lost in response to criticism from the scribes and pharisees.

Gospel Incompatibility

The Gospel is unique! While there may be elements of Christianity in other worldviews and systems of morality, the Gospel is ultimately incompatible with any other "system". Shockingly, Jesus uses first century Judaism as an example of that which must be replaced. He does this masterfully, employing (you guessed it) PARABLES!

Is this well-known parable shocking to you? It would have been to its original hearers. Do we really understand who the Pharisees and tax collectors of the first century were? Could the actually be a little Pharisee in devoted Christians today? Take a listen and prepare to dig deep to evaluate your own heart attitude and whether it is consistent with a Pharisee or a tax collector.

This parable is often identified as the most difficult of all parables to understand. Why? The difficulty arises because this parable seems to feature Jesus endorsing unjust gain (sin). Is that true? Open your Bible, listen in and decide for yourself.

Jesus wraps up his famous "kingdom" parables with an everyday fishing illustration. What sets this parable apart from the others? This parable, number seven of seven in Matthew 13 truly does "complete" Jesus prophetic and pithy kingdom teachings. As Jesus "wraps it up", He tells a story of final outcomes. Let's take a journey through this text and see our Master at work. He intends for us to engage our imaginations as He illustrates an eschatological separation.
