Every home ultimately breaks up by death's visit. No family escapes seeing the circle of their home dissolve into the dark depths of the grave. Every life eventually will end in death. He waits, as every page of history is deeply stained. Unavenged evils, from the time of the first murder until this present hour are still pending. Human history has been written in blood, tears, and death. Why does Jesus wait? Why is Satan allowed to wrap his vicious, slimy, filthy, cruel tentacles around human life and around this earth? The weak are slain, the helpless are crushed, and people on this earth by uncounted millions and millions are oppressed, living in despair, and it seems that Jesus just waits. He waits, but somewhere beyond the starry sky there stands a herald angel with a trumpet in his hand, and by the decree of the Lord God Almighty, there is a day, there is an hour, there is a moment, there is an elected time when the angel shall sound and the kingdoms of this world shall become the kingdoms of our God and of His Christ. As each one breaks open it reveals another event that's going to happen on the earth. By the sixth seal in Revelation 6:12-17, we have an earthquake. When God makes the earth shake, it is a big one. The sun becomes as black as sackcloth of hair and the moon becomes like blood. The stars of heaven fell to the earth. Imagine a day when the sun goes black, the moon goes blood-red, and the stars all fall out of heaven as the sky departs like a scroll. As those scenes flash by above, every mountain and island gets shaken out of their places below. This is like a: Global Horror Movie Can you imagine that? These will be scary times in verses 15 to 17. The shaken inhabitants of Earth scream for the rocks and the mountains to fall, to hide them from the face of him that sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of His wrath has come and who shall be able to stand? That was only the first of the 14 chapters of tribulation horrors. Next, jump to the last seal in Revelation 8:1. This seal unleashes the seven trumpet judgments, another way to signify terrifying, wide-spread judgment. Revelation 8:7 gives us just a little taste of what is going on as the judgments roll across the land, seas, and skies: "The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up". So much entertainment of all forms centers around fiction because reality is often mundane and boring. As we get to Revelation 9, everything mundane or boring evaporates. Just to stay alive takes much of most people's effort. Retrace in your minds what we have seen so far in Revelation chapters 6,7 & 8: Just breathing will be hard as most of the world will have some form of respiratory damage from the smoke, ash, and violent weather changes. Water deprivation, food scarcity, and the constant sights of death and destruction have all become familiar, common, and the "new normal" to the daily lives of earth's survivors. 1/4th + 1/3rd = 58% Remember, God has already told us that 1/4th of humanity has perished (that was in Rev. 6:8). Now God tells us that in Rev. 9:18 that 1/3rd more will perish. If you add 25% + 33%, that makes just shy of 60%. That means death is staggeringly common. But life this side of Hell will never get as unpleasant as we will see it becomes in this chapter. Again we must ask: what is the purpose of all this? Why would God share such a bleak, stark, and horrific record about the future? One answer is clearly to show a contrast between two: Stark Choices between Christ & Satan. Remember how Jesus explained that He came to give abundant life (John 10:10); but the Devil came to kill, steal, and to destroy. That contrast is so evident here in Rev. 9. God has always offered humans a way out of their sin. Here, again He does the same, and here again, humans refuse to repent. As we open to Revelation 6:2, I wonder if most of us remember what directly precedes the launch of the Tribulation? The way that Jesus, Paul, John & Daniel all describe the start of the Tribulation is not with disasters, wars, famines, and pestilences. The Tribulation begins, according to the Bible, with global peace, safety, and prosperity. For decade after decade we in Christ's church have been well taught about the inexorable slide our world is in, heading towards the final war. Armageddon and the apocalyptic events associated with it are even part of secular media reports. We hear regularly of the dangers of nuclear war, bio-terrorism, pollution, and global warming. It seems like every day we are seeing more and more of what the Bible talks about with our world plunging deeper into chaos, ethnic conflicts, horrific acts of terrorism and aggression, and what seems like more and more natural disasters. God's Word warns of all these plagues, quakes, and famines. Do all those conditions mean that the Tribulation is close? The real question to which we need to find the answer from God's Word is: Which Comes First: Global Peace or Global Holocaust? THE EARTH-DWELLERS WILL HAVE A BAD ENDING. What is an earth dweller? The expression is found seven times (6:10; 11:10; 13:8, 12, 14; 14:6; 17:8) in the book and speaks of a type of people, those whose life is tied only to this world. It is thus another term for a worldly person, one who is at home and wants to live for this doomed planet. 2. THE JUDGMENTS COMING ARE HORRIBLY FRIGHTENING: God wants us to be jolted by the vivid and inescapable sights of future calamities. God always wants us to soberly look at reality. He has given us the truth and we need to act on it. 3. THE JUDGMENTS COMING ARE TERRIBLY UNSETTLING: we are powerless before an angry God. There is nothing that can stop His plan, His judgment, and earth's ultimate dissolution as a planet. 4. His use of the phrase "now I saw" in English, comes from a Greek phrase kai eidon (I saw) that God directs and inspires John to use all the way through the book of Revelation. This phrase shows us that this is a chronological progression (note the 24 usages: 6:1, 2, 5, 8, 12; 7:2; 8:2, 13; 9:1; 10:1; 13:1, 11; 14:1, 6, 14; 15:1; 16:13; 17:3; 19:11, 17, 19; 20:1, 4, 11). Each major event from the launch of the Tribulation through Christ's return is introduced by this phrase. Then chapter 21 opens, after all the sinners of all the ages, Satan, and the demons, have been consigned to the lake of fire (20:10–15). Then, as we saw already in 2 Peter 3, God creates a new universe for us to dwell in forever. We are allowed to see what no Old Testament prophet ever understood. Peter tells us that they searched hard to figure out what it all meant. They never saw the difference between Christ's first and second coming. They thought it was all one event. So we see what Old Testament prophets couldn't see. Paul said that Christ's coming was a mystery, hidden in ages past. Jesus told us that there would be a long wait from the Cross to His second coming. We are in that long period, and the book of Revelation is our guide to God's plan. So here in your hands (the Bible) is the box full of puzzle pieces, over 31,103 of them to be exact. But the picture on the front of the box is bright and clear, and we find that picture, that map that makes every piece fit in its place right here in the Revelation. God is unveiling His plan for the future. He gives it to us in Christ's Church. Erwin Lutzer tells a wonderful story about dying grace. He writes: "When Corrie ten Boom was a girl, her first experience with death came after visiting the home of a neighbor who had just died. When she thought of the fact that her parents would die someday, her father comforted her by asking, 'When I go to Amsterdam, when do I give you your ticket?' 'Just before we get on the train.' 'Exactly. Just so your heavenly Father will give you exactly what you need when we die—He'll give it to you just when you need it.' " To have dying grace does not mean that we will be free from sorrow, whether at our own impending death or the death of someone we love. Some Christians have mistakenly thought that grief demonstrates a lack of faith. Thus they have felt it necessary to maintain strength rather than deal honestly with a painful loss (Hebrews 5:7). As Christians, we live with the tension between what is "already ours" and the "not yet" of our experience. Paul said believers should look forward to Christ's return "that you may not grieve, as do the rest who have no hope" (1 Thessalonians 4:13, NASB). Grief was expected, but it is different from the grief of the world. There is a difference between tears of hope and tears of hopelessness. Fully 20% of the Bible is consumed with describing the events that God calls the end of days. Those end of days are more described and detailed for us—more than even the days when Christ walked the shores of Galilee. Yet with all that God has told us, we often miss how God connects evangelism and prophetic events. An understanding of the prophetic word gives boldness and confidence, encouragement and hope as we go into all the world. We should accept and understand that we may very well be living in apocalyptic times. The true meaning of apocalypse in Greek is 'unveiled, unveiling'. It describes something that is revealed that was formerly hidden. The last book of the Bible is called the Apocalupsis of Jesus Christ–The unveiling of Jesus Christ. In that book, God reveals the end of days—and we see Christ's Glory in the events, and how He settles the problem of sin in the universe. Inside were grandmothers and infants, photo albums and hamster cages, brand new pickups, and pop-up campers. Behind the storm lay shattered homes, shattered families, shattered lives, shattered bodies. What could be worse than that? To answer that question join me in Kansas at a military outpost called Camp Funston. It is March 4th, 1918 and the flu pandemic of 1918 begins. Tens of millions of deaths later, it was and remains a mystery. It began with a relatively mild initial assault on March 4, when the first reported case occurred at Camp Funston, Kans. Within four months, the virus had traversed the globe. The flu sickened millions but killed relatively few, and in the tumult of World War I, the first wave seemed pretty mundane. No one knew it at the time, of course, but flu viruses are notoriously unstable– "genetically labile," as one researcher puts it. Set one flu virus beside another, and the two may trade genes, a process called re-assortment. If this re-assortment produces a virus that closely resembles one of its parents, it is said to have undergone antigenic drift. On rare occasions, this scrambling can be dramatic. The virus becomes a kind of Frankenstein virus so different from existing strains that the human population has no immunity to it. In August 1918, the mild virus apparently re-assorted into something positively deadly. Outbreaks caused by the new variant exploded almost simultaneously in three far-flung locations: France, Sierra Leone and Boston. It was Babylon that first conquered in a global way. How many peace-loving boys and their dads perished to fill the coffers of their king? Then Assyrian and Persian and Greek armies sowed blood, broken bodies, and death across the face of the earth. In cold, calculated, and cruel efficiency the Romans fought and won the world we know. In more modern times the 13th-century inhabitants of Asia were mesmerized by the Khans and the Mongol Empire was carved across the continents leaving an estimated 40 million dead in its path. Five hundred years pass and Napoleon ravages Europe for 20 years with a death toll of 5 million as blindly his armies follow him. Most vivid is the strange little man who hypnotized some of the most sophisticated and civilized cultures on the planet into becoming barbaric butchers of humanity. Hitler caused upwards of 50 million deaths with 6 million of them being the gasses and murdered people of promise the Jews. Those pages are dark ones in history but far worse are those to come. Armies that dwarf all, which ever marched, are poised even as we speak and at a moment known only to God the ultimate weapon, angels of doom by the hundreds of millions will be unleashed. Needing no weapons, no food, no vehicles, no rest these cosmic warriors are unstoppable and deadly. In their wake will fall more than all wars have ever killed and all in just a brief moment in time. THE CHAPTER Now in chapter 10, we have the preparations for the second half of the Tribulation by means of the 7th trumpet. Here we see the King of Kings place His feet on land and sea. Jesus is the conqueror, He has taken back His earth, He is planting His feet as Owner and taking possession of what is rightly His. This is Jesus the Redeemer who took the Title Deed to the Universe from the Majesty on High in chapter 5. He is the One who loosed each seal and now He prepares for the final assault upon hard-hearted earthlings who refuse to bow to Him. With a roar like a lion, He expresses His POWER and with the sounding of thunder, He declares the coming judgment. THE MYSTERY In the New Testament, a mystery is not something eerie or inscrutable, but rather "a truth that was hidden by God in times past and is now revealed to those who are in His family." A mystery is a "sacred secret" that is unknown to unbelievers but understood and treasured by the people of God.  The mystery of the kingdom (see Matt. 13:11) Jesus presented here was the truth that the good news was rejected by the majority. Thus opens the Tribulation, the first step in Christ's taking back the earth, which is rightfully His. One by one Christ unrolls the seals. Money seemed to be the best thing to have, it made life easier; and that is so true from an earthly standpoint. More money, more power. More money, more freedom. More money, more security. But Jesus added something they had never thought of. Money makes earthly life easier, but money can also make eternal life impossible. Jesus was pointing out before their very eyes that material possessions tend to rivet the owner's attention upon earthly matters to the exclusion of heavenly. Wealth can enslave us without us even realizing what is happening. So Jesus said: Beware. Riches are a Handicap. Peter had already heard Jesus explain how money, possessions and pursuits keep us from listening to the Word that brings salvation.
