Pressed forward with our review and response to the King James Only presentation we began on Tuesday, this time getting into the background of the Textus Receptus and the basic circularity of the arguments used in this particular radio program. Also took two useful calls as well.

Today I began responding to some proponents of King James Onlyism who did a review/rebuttal of my book on the radio last week. As I had noted, I invited them to participate, but so far, I haven’t gotten a lot of response to my invitations. In any case, it has been a while since addressing some of these issues, so I get the feeling for some of our newer listeners this might be “new material.” In any case, we only got about 12 minutes into their presentation before taking a phone call on Codex Sinaiticus that took up the rest of our time. We will continue the review/response on Thursday.

A very enjoyable program today. I started out talking about the upcoming Newsweek hit-piece, and then we took calls the rest of the hour. The first caller and I had a great discussion about the doctrines of grace, proving that it can be done without the rancor some always bring to the discussion! I include the video of that call below.

For those who missed the Dividing Line from last (12/4/08) Thursday, Dr. White continued his review of the recent SBC John 3:16 conference and examined Dr. Steven Lemke’s remarks specifically. Dr. White then took a call from Rich in Las Vegas regarding the problems with the John 3:16 conference and Macintosh ownership.

I continued my review of The John 3:16 Conference on the program today, playing clips from Paige Patterson, David Allen, etc. I play a clip from Paige Patterson where he says that you cannot prove from Scripture that all men are born guilty. I note the following comments from Dr. Boyce: "It follows from the facts in these last two statements, that a corrupt nature makes a condition as truly sinful, and guilty, and liable to punishment, as actual transgressions. Consequently, at the very moment of birth, the presence and possession of such a nature shows that even the infant sons of Adam are born under all the penalties which befell their ancestor in the day of his sin. Actual transgression subsequently adds new guilt to guilt already existing, but does not substitute a state of guilt for one of innocence. (James Boyce, Abstract of Systematic Theology, p. 250". I addressed the new article posted by David Allen on Peter Lumpkin’s blog at the end of the program.

Went about seven minutes long today so I could conclude a few thoughts in response to David Allen. First I gave about a 15 minute report on the London/Durham trips, then I launched into a Radio Free Geneva! I contrasted how Dr. Allen has treated me with how I approached the Mark Seifrid situation back in 2004, and then played his specific comments. I will be following up on Tuesday of next week (there will be no DL on Thursday for obvious reasons).

Took a look at some of the expressions of hatred toward God’s law and God’s people being expressed in Western culture post-Obamacoronation, noted that he is planning on acting on his promises to immediately rescind executive orders Bush put in place to prohibit federal funds from being used in other countries to kill unborn children (as well as that restricting the funding of embryonic stem cell research), etc. Also took a few minutes to comment on the further false accusations leveled at me relating to erronious or unbalanced definitions of Calvinism.

After talking about the upcoming London trip I played Shabir Ally’s opening statement from a debate in 2005 on Muhammad in the Bible, challenging the audience to answer the question, “How would I respond to that?” After Monday, November 17th, you’ll know how I respond to it!

A bit of an unusual day on the DL. I played one Tim Staples clip, then we started taking calls on all sorts of subjects, including the one I include in the video below, ending with a good question about the NT’s use of the Septuagint and inerrancy. Once again proving the utterly unique nature of The Dividing Line! Enjoy!

Well then take a break and listen to the DL! Talked about a lot of exciting things today, from debates in London to the next edition of The King James Only Controversy to more on the sola scriptura front. Just what you need to get your mind out of the mess of the world and onto issues that have eternal value!

I really enjoyed today’s DL. I started out with thanks to all who have sent in e-mails to testimonies@aomin.org. Then I felt compelled to make some comments about the current situation in Western culture, the economic melt-down, etc., in light of the rampant degradation and sinfulness of that culture. We then went to calls, covering salvation in the OT, a young man wanting to know how to get into the realm of apologetics, and a call from my old friend Don Lord about…lots of stuff. A really enjoyable hour, that hope will be encouraging to you all.

Today I started off with Osama Abdullah's allegation that Jesus "ran" from His own creation when He fled to Egypt. Of course, He was an infant in His mother's arms at the time, but hey, let's not let reality get in the way of a good argument! Then we took a call on the role of presuppositions in the study of Scripture, and then dedicated the last half hour to the 1993 sola scriptura debate with Patrick Madrid.

That took the first half hour, then we took a call on the Granville Sharp Rule (see the video below), and then I wanted to work through Surah 5 in reference to the “people of the Gospel,” and that took the rest of the time.

Yesterday I reported a bit on my trip to New Mexico, discussed the upcoming debates this weekend, took a call on Western Muslim apologists and how they differ wildly from their counterparts in Islamic countries, and then dove back into the sola scriptura debate from 1993. However, we only covered…seven minutes! Still, important materials.

We continued the discussion of the 1993 sola scriptura debate with Patrick Madrid on the program yesterday. The last ten minutes or so we took a call from Florida on the subject of “prophet” Joel Hemphill, his attacks upon the deity of Christ, and his willingness to “minister in music” in Trinitarian churches.

Alan Kurschner and I discussed his paper on the textual variant at Luke 23:34, “And Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'” We devoted the entire hour to the subject (as you can see from the earlier blog entry providing graphics on the subject).

We began listening to the 1993 San Diego debate on sola scriptura with Roman Catholic apologist Patrick Madrid today. We will continue this review over the course of the next few programs, with the exception of this Thursday when we will be examining the textual variant at Luke 23:34 with Alan Kurschner. Many have commented that they find this kind of close review of these debates to be very useful and helpful, and surely we hope that will be the case here.

Used a recently posted Roman Catholic YouTube video, posted by both “Jerusalem Jones” Steve Ray and Dave Armstrong, as the jumping off point to listen to portions of past debates with Gerry Matatics, comments on sola scriptura, etc. Took some calls, one on sola scriptura and the early councils, the other on the idea of an “inspired interpretation.” For those dealing with Roman Catholic claims of authority, this program will be helpful. For those dealing with those Roman Catholic apologists who really are not serious about truth but do what they do for less-than-noble reasons, you will find more information about that “ilk” as well.

How we defend the faith, obviously, depends on the essence and shape of the faith itself. Theology matters, and in this case, determines what is a consistent means of defending the faith and what is not. Today I began reviewing a recent debate involving Bart Ehrman and in so doing began discussing the foundational differences between apologetics that begins with the sovereignty of God and apologetics that begins with the autonomy of man.

I don’t know if there was an accident nearby or just what, but our lights were dancing on and off today during the DL, so I’m not sure just how that impacted the program. It sure was distracting to me, anyway! But, we pressed on anyway, discussing the heretic Gene Robinson, Todd Bentley, the Comma Johanneum (that was when the lights starting dancing—I wonder if Gail Riplinger will make something of that?), New Perspectivism, and theonomy. Once again, about as eclectic as you can get.

Started off with a clip from Brother Modene against “Lordship Salvation” and Calvinism and other things, followed by a few moments of a recent sermon from First Baptist Houston wherein we learned that we are “awed by salvation, but we are confused by doctrine.” Not sure how you talk about salvation without talking about doctrine, but that led us to a clip by Jimmy Akin illustrating the new Roman inclusivism where you can be an atheist and yet die as the “friend of God” as long as your ignorance of God was not “your fault.” So much for Romans 1!

We finished the veneration of the saints debate on Thursday's DL, noting once again that while the outcome of the debate was, in fact, painfully obvious, what was painfully obvious was the exact opposite of what was claimed by Patrick Madrid on Catholic Answers Live. And again, I repeat my offer: to the Roman Catholic who called CA Live, and to the Protestant to which that person is speaking, a free copy of the debate, if they will but listen to it carefully. We are truly that confident of the outcome of that debate. We moved from there to a similar clip from Tim Staples, and I made some comments on the Art Sippo encounter as well.

Got into the audience questions today, so we should finish off the veneration of saints and angels debate on Thursday. Covered both closing statements, including Madrid’s incredible assertion that to pray for “all men” in 1 Timothy likewise means praying for the dead, and, I guess, to them as well (why didn’t the Arminians think of that one?), and then got through the ultra-cheap shot audience question (and Madrid’s playing on it).

Today on The Dividing Line: The Supreme Court, the Law of God, Barack Obama, The West Wing, Pagan Superstitions about the Dead, and Patrick Madrid The title says it all. A pretty unusual DL where I spent the first half hour tying together the recent SCOTUS abomination (the Kennedy child-rapist case), Barack Obama’s “Leviticus and shellfish” comments, the classic West Wing clip where the President presents the classic pro-homosexual attack on the Bible, Pagan superstitions in the religions around Israel, and Patrick Madrid. It’s worth a listen just to figure out how I did it!

We made it all the way through the cross-examination portion of the debate today, waiting, breathlessly, for the “painfully obviously” demonstration of the unbiblical nature of the arguments made against Rome’s veneration of Mary, saints, and angels. We haven’t encountered it yet. Today, though, we did get a fair amount of discussion of ultimate authorities, and saw, once again, the contrast between sola scriptura and sola ecclesia. We also observed a sterling moment in the history of my debates: Patrick Madrid turning to the audience and asking the Catholics, “Any Catholics here worship statues?” Wow. Overwhelming stuff.

The Painfully Obvious Veneration of Saints Debate Part 1

I recently listened to Patrick Madrid speaking of our 2002 debate as a “painfully obvious” example of how “unbiblical” the arguments are against the Roman Catholic perspective on the veneration of saints. So I thought I would start working through the debate itself. It is amazing how many people will proclaim someone a “winner” of a debate without actually listening to the debate itself. In any case, we went a little long (about 12 minutes).

I haven’t ever publicly commented on John Loftus before, but a recent YouTube video he posted on the Trinity caught my attention. During the show folks were posting materials indicating he graduated from Trinity, which means there really is no excuse for his ignorance of the doctrine he was attempting to review, and refute. In any case, played that, interacted with it, and then took calls on a variety of issues.

Started off light today, discussing my new Kindle and what books I have on it. But then we get rolling, looking at the attack upon the Christian faith by the secularists in the judicial branch of the Canadian government. Those who wish to end freedom of speech and expression are many, and their primary target comprises you and me.

Christians in Canada

Started with a heart-breaking article about a blind Muslim boy killed by his mullah for not memorizing the Qur’an in Pakistan, followed by an article on the simple reality that Canada is not a friendly place for Christians anymore. Then we listened to a response by Tim Staples, newly demoted from “one of the foremost Bible scholars in the Church” to “one of the leading apologists today,” regarding the term “until” at Matthew 1:25, and learned that once again, Rome’s apologists do not mind recycling replies even when they have been refuted over and over and over again. Then we took phone calls on a wide, wide variety of subjects. Something for everyone!

Well, it’s Tuesday, and Tuesday mornings are supposed to be “no phone call” times. Not today! Lined them up early and they kept coming! Spent most of the hour on a wide variety of topics from the KJV Only denial of the Septuagint (LXX) to the wills of God! Quite a potpourri of topics! Then, for the last fifteen minutes I played some clips from Todd Bentley, the wild-eyed purveyor of “revival” down in Florida. If this stuff doesn’t shock you, well, nothing will. Sad, incredible stuff. See…theology matters!

Started out with a period of mourning for the demotion of Tim Staples from one of the “Church’s foremost Biblical scholars” to just “a top apologist.” We are still pondering whether we should send a dozen Tulips as a consolation prize. Then we looked at Hamza Yusuf repeating the “Nicea set the canon” myth, and then played a random clip from Grasshopperjax, the KJV Only fellow who has posted a 23-part reply to my book on KJV Onlyism. Also took a call on…the epistemology of ultimate authorities. Another eclectic Dividing Line!.

Accusations from 1998 Refuted and Steve Ray Review Continued

Today on the Dividing Line I took the time to review and refute the accusations published nearly a decade ago in Interpretation by D.H. Williams relating to his very poor reading of my chapter in the Soli Deo Gloria book and his provision of a footnote in which he made some negative comments. This footnote had been recently posted by a convert to Rome, so I decided to examine it. Of course, someone else could have done that and realized the accusations were not overly weighty, but—well, you know why folks like a convert to Roman Catholicism wouldn’t do that. Anyway, that took the first half hour, and involved a discussion of Athanasius and his view of authority. Then we went back to Steve Ray and his “verses” he never saw as a Baptist on the topic of the Eucharist.

There is No Such Thing as Homosexual Marriage

Yesterday four radical judicial revolutionaries decided to overthrow centuries of practice and law and create a monstrosity called “gay marriage.” No such thing exists. That is like a round square, or a light of darkness. Marriage is not defined by judges who believe themselves free to create new realities. Marriage is a divine institution. But yesterday, the far-reaching proclamation (it wasn’t a decision) of the CA Supreme Court made historic and biblical Christianity officially bigoted by granting civils rights on the basis of deviant sexual practice. This is an abuse of sexuality, marriage, children, families, and the nation as a whole. That was our subject on the DL today.

Jeremiah Wright and Black Liberation Theology

This morning I started reading through James E. Cone’s Black Theology & Black Power. I had ordered the book since Jeremiah Wright had insisted that to understand his views, you have to read Cone. So, today, I started reading quotations from Cone’s book on the program. Racism breeds heresy, and Cone’s racism is absolutely beyond words. It is tremendously sad to read “Christianized racism,” whether the purveyor of it is white, tan, brown, or black. It remains horrific all the same. Heresy is heresy, and this perversion of Christianity needs to be identified for what it is, and believers need to be quick to condemn it and all it stands for. A fast moving program, to be sure.

During the first half hour of the DL today I played some clips from Tim Staples. I also played a commercial from Catholic Answers that identifies Staples as “one of the foremost biblical scholars in the church today.” I had no idea I had debated one of the foremost biblical scholars Rome has to offer! Which made it all the more odd to listen to Staples misquote Matthew 23:37 just like Dave Hunt and numerous others in another clip we listened to. Anyway, the calls started up after the break and we covered a lot of ground with a wide variety of questions right up to the end of the hour.

Went over the opening statements in the Ehrman/Wallace debate from New Orleans. The topic of the integrity of the Bible is the central apologetic issue of our time, and Ehrman’s “400,000 variants, which is more variants than there are words in the NT” argument has become almost ubiquitous. Being able to respond meaningfully and clearly is vital to the Christian who does not desire to be silent in today’s culture. Then we took some calls as well.

Started off with a reminder of the upcoming debate, conference, and cruise in Ft. Lauderdale in light of Dan Wallace’s debate with my future opponent, Bart Ehrman. Then I had a few things to say about the debate with Jalal Abualrub, we took a call on purgatory, and then I got to the Tim Staples “Who is James White?” Catholic Answers call.

Steve Gregg vs. James White Debate: Part 4

I was, of course, very disappointed with the second half of today’s program. I don’t know if Mr. Gregg just became upset at the refutation of his errors on Acts 13:48 or if this was planned, but he decided to do the “This is a yes/no question—please ignore all the presuppositions and assumptions I will load into this, and answer in ten seconds and then let me add a snide remark at the end of each before moving on”—routine, which, given the gravity of the topic and the context (two professing Christians), I felt was utterly reprehensible. I will not engage in on-air food fights with folks who want to talk over me–that is not an appropriate behavior for the topic at hand, and it does not edify the listeners, who can’t figure out who is saying what anyway. If Mr. Gregg wishes to seek to overthrow the testimony of Scripture to the universal sinfulness of man, let him make his case. I will respond. But I believe there are standards for those who profess to be Christians. It is one thing for a Muslim, or a Mormon, or an atheist, to behave in certain ways, but Mr. Gregg professes faith, and therefore must be held to a higher standard.

Had lots of calls on a wide variety of topics today, and likewise played two clips, one from Zakir Naik, demonstrating that the normative Islamic apologists either do not understand the Christian faith they criticize or, sadly, do not care to accurately represent it, and another documenting how I, James White, misquoted Augustine! Travesty of travesties! Listen for yourself!

Steve Ray Exposed, William Albrecht Reviewed

Went a little long today because I had a lot to cover. First, Neil from Toronto called to give us a quick review of the Hunt/Ally debate from last Friday. Then I launched into Steve Ray’s now completely documented dishonesty, and his promotion of William Albrecht’s video responses to my series on Ignatius. So I reviewed Ray’s blog article (noted below), documented its obvious dishonesty, and then went to William Albrecht’s video reviews, as recommended by Steve Ray, showing that if this is the best Rome has to offer, well, the battle is surely over. Another amazing display of just how far Rome’s apologists will go in service to “Mother Church.”

So today I played the recording of Marrs’ call to KIXL Radio back in 1994 during my radio debate with D.A. Waite. Then we took a good call on the Book of Mormon, then I reviewed some Jimmy Akin comments on predestination.

Defining Mary

Yesterday on The Dividing Line the callers drove the topic after I spent the first portion of the program discussing the renewed move to define Mary as Co-Redemptrix, Co-Mediatrix, and Advocate for the people of God, as discussed by Art Sippo in a recent blog article. Then the callers had some pretty tough exegetical and hermeneutical questions.

For those who like church history/patristics oriented programs, yesterday’s Dividing Line was for you! Discussions of Augustine, Origen, and whether you should interpret the New Testament in light of Christological definitions created three and four centuries after the time of the Apostles filled our time on the program.

Preparing to Visit an Islamic Presentation

First three quarters of today’s program involved talking to a brother from Florida about what kind of question he can ask of his Muslim friends at a presentation on the Qur’an as the “final revelation from God.” I made reference to this video and played it during my response. I also mentioned the video below, which I had just posted on YouTube.

Covered a range of items again today, starting off with a truly excellent Christopher Hitchens impression by yours truly (really, I mean it!), and some discussion of his hatred of God, followed by a call from Stephen up in Toronto about the Deedat videos and Dave Hunt’s debate with Shabir Ally coming up. Then I reviewed Steve Ray’s comments on Catholic Answers Live about the apostolic fathers.

Well, I thought I would spend some time talking about the Gregg debate, but as soon as the intro music finished, I looked at my little tablet pc, which has our phone system software running on it, and who is the first caller, but Nadir Ahmed. And the attached description of the call is about why he won’t be doing our debate. And it just got stranger from there! Nearly 40 minutes with Nadir covering…well, you just sorta have to listen. Then the next call was on Mormonism, and then a call back on Islam! I’m tired just thinking about it! You won’t fall asleep during this one, to be sure!

After making the announcement of the Ehrman debate and conference in January of 09, the calls started. So the first half hour is pretty much about the upcoming debate, conference, and cruise, with special guest Mike O’Fallon, and the second half our callers drove the agenda…all over the road!

Well, I was going to address the rest of Steve Ray’s comments on Catholic Answers Live today. I had them all cued up. But even before the program began, we had calls. In fact, we filled the lines. As a result, we covered a very wide range of topics once again, from Islam to Roman Catholicism to John 1:1 and a few others. Something for everyone!

Today on The Dividing Line I addressed changes in Mormonism, focusing on the church’s obvious retreat from the viewpoints and beliefs of earlier generations. This led me to tell the story of Zelph the White Lamanite. You’ll just have to listen. Then we took calls on Islam and Roman Catholicism, so we truly covered a wide spectrum of topics today!

Islamic Studies Ph.D

I announced my entrance into a Ph.D. program in Islamic studies, and spoke about my reasons for following what I believe to be the Lord’s leading in this matter, my goals, and my concerns relating to the maintenance of the work of Alpha and Omega during this time period. I cannot say “no” to the many opportunities of debate, teaching, preaching, and writing, that come my way in increasing numbers. So I have to somehow work smarter, work harder, and find a way to combine all of these things in such a fashion as to glorify God through the advancement of this ministry. This will mean more work for Rich, and more demands on the ministry itself. We had some callers who likewise commented on the importance of the work.
