Not Because of Me

John 8:42–47 reveals a sharp confrontation between Jesus and the religious leaders, where Jesus exposes their true spiritual condition. He states that if God were truly their Father, they would love Him, but instead, they reject the truth because their spiritual father is the devil, the father of lies. This passage underscores the reality of spiritual blindness and human resistance to divine truth, emphasizing that those who belong to God hear and accept His word. It reveals the seriousness of rejecting Christ and the moral responsibility of humanity in their rebellion against God. Heidelberg Catechism, Lord's Day 4, Q&A 9 asks: "But doesn't God do us an injustice by requiring in his law what we are unable to do?" The answer is clear: No, for God created humanity with the ability to keep the law, but through the willful disobedience of Adam and Eve, human nature became corrupted. This catechism connects directly with John 8:42–47 by affirming that the inability to obey God is not due to God's injustice, but to humanity's own fall into sin. Together, they highlight human accountability, the depth of our spiritual corruption, and the justness of God's expectations despite our sinful nature.

Because He First Loved Us

1 John 4:7–19 emphasizes the central Christian teaching that love originates from God and is the defining mark of those who truly know Him. The passage highlights that God is love, and He demonstrated this love most profoundly by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, as a sacrifice for humanity's sins. This divine love not only offers salvation but also serves as the model for how believers should love one another. The text affirms that when Christians live in love, God lives in them, perfecting His love through them and removing fear, especially the fear of judgment. Thus, it underscores that true love is both the evidence of God's presence and the foundation of Christian life and relationships.

Amazing Love

Numbers 21:4-9 and John 3:14-18 are profoundly connected in their themes of salvation, faith, and God's provision. In Numbers, the Israelites, after grumbling against God, are plagued by venomous snakes, but God instructs Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it on a pole so that all who look at it are healed. This act of faith in God's provision for healing foreshadows the message of salvation in John 3:14-18, where Jesus likens His impending crucifixion to the bronze serpent, symbolizing that, just as those who looked at the serpent were healed, all who look to Jesus in faith will receive eternal life. Both passages highlight the need for faith in God's power to save, demonstrating how God's mercy and provision transcend time, pointing to Jesus as the ultimate source of spiritual healing and salvation for humanity. It is only when we see the extent of our sinfulness, the perilous plight we are in, and the price that had to be paid for our redemption that we can see how amazing the love of God truly is.

After The Resurrection

Brothers and Sisters in Jesus Christ: When a person dies, he might leave a legacy. You might remember he made you laugh. Maybe she was a good cook. Maybe you raised children together. Or maybe he left an inheritance for you. Those are all nice legacies. But that's all. They can't do anything more for you. You can't talk to them. You can't eat their food. You can't spend time with them. And whatever they left will one day be used up. But when Jesus died it was not the end. He rose triumphantly on the 3rd day and continued to provide what his children needed. He left a lasting legacy! Listen then to this lasting legacy he left. Our headings are: 1. Proof of the Resurrection 2. Peace of the Resurrection 3. Power of the Resurrection Our goals are: That you will rejoice Jesus was raised from the dead for you, and that you will proclaim the benefits of his resurrection so others can receive his benefits and bring glory to him also.

Jesus is God: He is the True Vine

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: Yes, Jesus is the Bread of Life, the Light of Life, the Door of Life, the Good Shepherd who preserves life, and the Resurrection and the Life! But there is something more: Jesus is the Vine of Life! Now I know you have enjoyed grape juice or aged grape juice in the past and it made you happy! Before you enjoyed those grapes, they had to be part of a branch and that branch had to be part of a vine, not just attached, but it had to draw from the vine, and that vine had to have sap or the grapes would have withered and died. And so too Christ! He is the Vine who supplies life to his children so they could have life and produce fruits. Our headings are: 1. Jesus is the True Vine of Life 2. What are the implications of Jesus being the True Vine of Life Our goals are: That you will be thankful for the true vine, that you will draw from the vine so you will be productive, and that you will help other wild branches to be grafted into The True Vine.

Jesus is God: He is the Good Shepherd who Preserves Life

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: When kids hear the term "stranger danger," they know what that means! There is someone who might hurt them…so they must run to safety. You teach them not to engage with that person because that person is not in their self-interest. There were "stranger dangers" in the Bible also, and Jesus warned his people not to follow them. The "stranger dangers" who were supposed to be shepherds of Israel, plundered the sheep! They should have been a place of safety and comfort for the sheep, but they were savages who abused the sheep for their own benefit. They were not good under-shepherds! Jesus told his people not only to avoid these dangerous shepherds, but to come to him and receive his benefits because he was the True Shepherd! Yes, Jesus is the Bread of Life, the Light of Life, the Door of Life, and now you see him as the Good Shepherd who preserves life! Hear about this today. Our headings are: 1. How is Jesus the Good Shepherd 2. What are the Implications of the Good Shepherd to You Our goals are: That you will rest in the provision and comfort of the True Shepherd and that you will then bring more sheep in so they too can be blessed by the Lord.

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: Jesus is the Bread of Life and Jesus is the Light of the World. What beautiful descriptions of Christ. But more, they, like all his 7 "I Am" statements, proved his Deity! This made Jesus the perfect God-man sacrifice for the sins of the world so men and women could be saved. Today, see the 3rd "I Am" statement of Jesus: Jesus is the door to life! Our headings are: 1. How is Jesus the Door to Life 2. What are the Implications of the Door to Life Our goals are: That you will enter God's kingdom through Christ, that you will remain there, and that you will invite others to join you inside the Door.

Beloved in the Lord: I am sure you are starting to see Christmas lights all over Scarborough now. I like them too. It is quite a dark time and the sun sets about 5 or earlier. The lights cheer me up. Maybe they cheer you up too. The Lord Jesus described himself as Light, except he is a much brighter light and the world is in much deeper darkness. He is so bright the world can see him. No wonder he described himself as the "Light of the World." Now this is the 2nd of Jesus' "I Am" statements. These statements show his Deity, which emphasized his qualifications to be the infinite God-man, the only one who was fit to die for the sins of the world. Our headings are: 1. How is Jesus the Light of the World 2. What are the implications of the Light of the World to you Our goals are: That you will let the Light of the World shine on you so you can see your sins, that you will learn how to walk in his light, and that you will shine this light for the world to see their sins.

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: Jesus described himself with 7 "I am statements." The "I am" statements prove his Deity. "I am" is the same root of Yahweh, which means "I am," or "I exist." This was how Jesus revealed himself to Moses at the burning bush -that pivotal time in human history when God re-established his covenant relationship with the whole nation. This name invoked confidence in who God is…his ability to rescue Israel from hell and take them to Canaan. References to: Exodus 3:13 | Isaiah 41:4 | Isaiah 43:10 | John 8:58 Why did Jesus use 7 ways (7-the number of completion) to show his Deity? Only God could save and he proved he was God. For that claim of being God the Jews tried to kill him. Today we will start with the first I AM: "I am the bread of life." Our headings are: 1. How is Jesus the Bread of Life 2. What are the implications of the Bread of Life for your life Our goals are: That you will learn to feast on the Lord and share of his goodness so the world can be saved.
