Growth in Grace

Young converts are prone to depend too much on joyful frames, and love high excitement in their devotional exercises; but their heavenly Father cures them of this folly, by leaving them for a season to walk in darkness and struggle with their own corruptions. When most sorely pressed and discouraged, however, He strengthens them with might in the inner man. He enables them to stand firmly against temptation; or, if they slide, he quickly restores them, and by such exercises they become much more sensible of their entire dependence than they were at first. They learn to be in the fear of the Lord all the day long, and to distrust entirely their own wisdom and strength, and to rely for all needed aid on the grace of Jesus Christ.

The Cure of Melancholy and Overmuch Sorrow, by Faith

If a man thinks that somewhat is a duty, which is no duty, and then sorrow for omitting it, such sorrow is all too much, because it is undue, and caused by error. Many I have known who have been greatly troubled, because they could not bring themselves to that length or order of meditation, for which they had neither ability nor time; and many, because they could not reprove sin in others, when prudent instruction and intimation was more suitable than reproof.

Avoid much solitariness, and be most commonly in some cheerful company. Not that I would have you do as the foolish sinners of the world do, to drink away melancholy, and keep company with sensual, vain, and unprofitable persons, that will draw you deeper into sin, and so make your wound greater instead of healing it, and multiply your troubles when you are forced to look back on your sinful loss of time.

Why God Permits His Children To Lose Their Spiritual Comfort

He allows them to lose their comfort for a season, so that He may make them feel more sensibly, and see more clearly, the deep depravity of their nature. We read that Jehovah led the Israelites "through a great and terrible wilderness in which there were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, and where there was no water ... that He might humble them, and test them, to do them good in the end," Deut. 8.15-16 by revealing to them what was in their hearts.

Spiritual Experience of Believers and Their Conversions -1654

Welsh Baptist Minister The Baptist Encyclopedia, 1881 Vavasor Powell was born in Radnorshire, Wales, in 1617. Through his parents he was connected with the first families in North Wales. When young he was taught the learned languages, and he became a successful student in pursuit of general knowledge. He received his university education at Jesus College, Oxford. In his youth he was the most mischievous boy in the neighborhood in which he lived. When he first officiated as an Episcopal minister, he says that "he was a reader of common prayers, in the habit of a foolish shepherd, that he slighted the Scriptures, was a stranger to secret and spiritual prayer, and a great profaner of the Sabbath." By reading Puritan books, hearing sermons which they preached, and by conversations with them, Mr. Powell was led to the Saviour, and his heart and character were complete1y changed. Soon after this he forsook the Episcopal Church. His preaching now became the most powerful agency in Wales. Wherever he went multitudes waited upon his ministry, and large numbers were renewed by the Holy Spirit and became followers of the Lamb. Opposition was stirred up by his burning eloquence and his unexampled success; and in 1642 he went to London, where his popularity was nearly as great, in a little time, as it was in Wales. He received a pressing invitation to settle in Dartford, in Kent, which he accepted, and there he founded a church, and brought many souls to the Redeemer.

Many appear to forget that we are saved and justified as sinners, and only sinners; and that we never can attain to anything higher, if we live to the age of Methuselah. Redeemed sinners, justified sinners, and renewed sinners doubtless we must be,--but sinners, sinners, sinners, we shall be always to the very last. They do not seem to comprehend that there is a wide difference between our justification and our sanctification.

My Conversion Testimony, Narration History - Interview on The Bud Zone

This was an interview that was done late in 2021 by Bud Alheim. It would change how I would record audiobooks. The reason is that he was using a very good mic with a pre-amp. His end of the interview was so much clearer audio that for the next few months I researched recording equipment and then settled on a Lewitt 440 Pure Mic, made in Austria, and an SSL 2 pre-amp to get the audio that is being recorded for these present narrations. There is a lot of indebtedness that we both have for John Owen that is discussed in the podcast. Bud introduced me to the Sermon, The Goodness and Severity of God in Judging Sinful Churches and Nations.

Enmity exerts itself is opposition. Enmity will oppose and contend with what it is at enmity with. Things natural and moral work this way also: as light and darkness, heat and cold oppose each other, so do virtue and vice. So is it with sin and grace. The apostle says, "These are contrary the one to the other" (Gal 5:17)—that is, they are placed and set in mutual opposition, and that continually and constantly, as we shall see.

A Discourse Of The Mortification of Sin

All cessation from some particular sin is not a mortification. A non-commission of a particular sin is not an evidence of the mortification of the root of it. Indeed, a man cannot commit all kinds of sin at a time, nor in many years; the commands of sin are contrary, and many masters commanding contrary things cannot be served at one and the same time. Pride commands to lavish, and covetousness to hoard. All sins have their times of reigning in a wicked man, as all graces have their particular seasons of acting.

Diary of Ruth Bryan, 1833-34 - Spiritual Darkness

August 4th.—Temporal things appear dark and distressing. During the past week my mind has been much exercised about my present employment, not knowing whether I am in the path of duty, or whether I ought not to seek a more lucrative one. May the Lord direct me! For myself, I do not desire great things, and shrink exceedingly from the idea of entering more into the world. Quiet and retirement I much prize—but I wish to follow the leadings of Providence. May the present darkness be removed from my mind, and my way made clear. I have at this time nothing at all to do. But the Lord has done wonders for me, and I would not distrust. Spiritual things are at a low ebb with me. I am reading John Owen, on "The Glory of Christ;" he is an author I much value; his writings are very searching. I find I have been too anxious about worldly things for some time past, to the neglect of spiritual duties, and in consequence have to cry, "My leanness! My leanness!" May the Lord restore me; it is He alone who can bring me with weeping and supplication to His footstool. Alas! alas! how little reason have I to hope that I am a Christian indeed. Oh, for a closer walk with God!

Spiritual Desertion - God Hiding His Face from His Children- 1699

When God at any time hides His face from his own children, it is very troublesome and terrible to them. There are two propositions contained in this doctrine which may be taken notice of: 1. That God may, and sometimes does, hide his face from his choicest servants. 2. That his so hiding from them is very troublesome and terrible to them.

For Those Fearing Their Day of Grace is Past. 1694

Lastly, the severity of this judgment will appear, in that it can never be inflicted but in anger. This is the fruit of divine wrath. All other calamities and afflictions may be the fruit of love, may be sanctified for our good, may turn to our advantage: but this calamity has no such original, and no such effect. A man may be given up to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the soul may be saved; but to be given up to sin is a thousand times worse, because that is the fruit of divine anger, in order to the damnation of the soul.

How Should We Pray: What True Prayer Is

WHY GOD DELAYS GRANTING OUR PRAYERS.—Sometimes, God delays answering our prayers to test and strengthen our faith, not because He sleeps or is absent from us, but so that we may receive with greater joy that which we have patiently awaited. This assures us of His eternal providence.

"I have greatly longed of late for a broken heart, and to lie low before God; and, when I ask for humility, I cannot bear the thoughts of being no more humble than other Christians. It seems to me, that though their degrees of humility may be suitable for them, yet it would be a vile self-exaltation in me, not to be the lowest in humility of all mankind.

Physical causes are not the only ones which produce this painful state of feeling. It is often produced, in a moment, by hearing some unpleasant news, or by the occurrence of some disagreeable event. But as was hinted, when these people of nervous temperament are relieved from a fit of depression, their sky is uncommonly free from clouds; their hopes are lively, their spirits buoyant, and nothing can trouble them. These alternations of day and night, of sunshine and darkness, must of necessity affect the feelings in regard to all matters, temporal and spiritual; for as in a dark night every object appears black, so when the mind is overcast with gloomy clouds, every view must partake of the same aspect.

The Unpardonable Sin - Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit

The sin against the Holy Spirit is not to be regarded simply as an isolated act, but also as the external symptom of a heart so radically and finally set against God that no power which God can consistently use will ever save it. This sin, therefore, can be only the culmination of a long course of self-hardening and self-depraving. He who has committed it must be either profoundly indifferent to his own condition, or actively and bitterly hostile to God; so that anxiety or fear on account of one's condition is evidence that it has not been committed. The sin against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven, simply because the soul that has committed it has ceased to be receptive of divine influences, Strong, Augustus H.. Systematic Theology

Worshipping God: The Manner how, [Without Distraction] The sense hereof is almost prevented, by the Emphasis of the former word. Yet this Word is not without its great weight: And it speaks a quiet, unshaken, and immovable frame of Soul, which cannot be whirled about with vain trifles. The soul is never at that holy quiet, as when it is directly ascending and communing with the Lord; and therefore Satan exceedingly envies this Celestial happiness of the Saints, and if he cannot distract them from duty, be sure he will distract them in it; and this he doth very much by the World and the business of it.

How the Affections Affect The Body, Sometimes Deceiving Us

It is no sign that affections have the nature of true religion, or that they have not, that they have great effects on the body. All affections whatsoever, have in some respect or degree, an effect on the body. As was observed before, such is our nature, and such are the laws of union of soul and body, that the mind can have no lively or vigorous exercise, without some effect upon the body. So subject is the body to the mind, and so much do its fluids, especially the animal spirits, attend the motions and exercises of the mind, that there cannot be so much as an intense thought, without an effect upon them.

Declension Introduced. 1. After all God has done for him, - after all the rich displays of his grace, the patience and tenderness of his instructions, the repeated discipline of his covenant, the tokens of love received, and the lessons of experience learned, there should still exist in the heart a principle, the tendency of which is to secret, perpetual, and alarming departure from God.

CASE 1. How may we distinguish between the workings of natural affection, and the real exercise of grace in religious duties? This serious question recently came into my hands in these very words. Upon reading it, I could not help but see that it contained a query of the greatest importance, and therefore thought it might be very proper to take it into consideration, and give it as clear a solution as lay in my power. - Pike and Hayward - Cases of Conscience 1755 I confess it is a very close and interesting inquiry that requires some skill to answer it, but much more spiritual skill to apply it to our own hearts and cases.

Christian Experience Class # 10 - The Christian Conflict, Evil Thoughts

Archibald Alexander - Imperfect sanctification—the spiritual warfare... Where two opposite principles exist in the same soul, there must be a perpetual conflict between them, until "the weaker dies". But as the "old man", though crucified, never becomes extinct in this life, this warfare between the flesh and the spirit never ceases until death. As these opposite moral principles operate through the same natural faculties and affections, it is a matter of course, that as the one gains strength the other must be proportionately weakened; and experience teaches that the most effectual way to subdue the power of sin is to nourish and exercise the principle of holiness. But if love to God grows cold or declines in vigor, then the motions of sin become more lively, and the stirring of inbred corruption is sensibly experienced.

This is the language of a regenerate soul, and it sums up the contents of the verses immediately preceding. The unregenerate man is wretched indeed, but he is a stranger to the "wretchedness" here expressed, for he knows nothing of the experience which evokes this wail. The whole context is devoted to a description of the conflict between the two natures in the child of God. "I delight in the law of God after the inward man" (v. 22), is true of none but born-again persons. But the one thus "delighting" discovers "another law in his members." This reference must not be limited to his physical members, but is to be understood as including all the various parts of his carnal personality. This "other law" is also at work in the memory, the imagination, the will, the heart, etc.

Backsliding In the Faith - Temporary and Perpetual

All this may take place and continue long before the person is aware of his danger, or acknowledges that there has been any serious departure from God. The forms of religion may still be kept up, and open sin avoided. But more commonly backsliders fall into some evil habits; they are evidently too much conformed to the world, and often go too far in participating in the pleasures and amusements of the world; and too often there is an indulgence in known sin into which they are gradually led, and on account of which they experience frequent compunction, and make solemn resolutions to avoid it in future. But when the hour of temptation comes, they are overcome again and again, and thus they live a miserable life, enslaved by some sin, over which, though they sometimes struggle hard, they cannot get the victory.

We ought not to expect from a regenerated child uniform attention to serious subjects, or a freedom from that gaiety and volatility which are characteristic of that tender age; but we should expect to find the natural propensity moderated, and the temper softened and seasoned, by the commingling of pious thoughts and affections with those which naturally flow from the infant mind.

If the distemper is not deep, sadness and fear commonly seize him at intervals. He is seized with fits of them for a part of a day, or for a whole day, or even for several days together. And after some short abatement of them, they return to him, and he feels them again fastening on his spirit. without knowing why. Through the distemper of his imagination, he is disposed to aggravate his sin, or misery, or danger. He is ready to speak with horror about every common infirmity or fault, as if it were an atrocious crime. Every ordinary affliction, he considers as utterly destructive; every small danger, as a great one; every possible danger, as probable; and every probable danger, as certain. He often thinks that, his day of grace is past.

As the dispensations of God towards His children are exceedingly diverse in different ages; likewise His dealings with individual believers who live at the same time are very different. Why it is so we cannot tell; but we are sure that He has wise reasons for all that He does. In some cases pious people appear to pass through life with scarcely a touch from His rod; while others, who to us do not appear to need more chastisement than those, are held the greater part of their life under the heavy pressure of affliction, with scarcely any intermission.

Imperfect Sanctification - The Spiritual Warfare

Where two opposite principles exist in the same soul, there must be a perpetual conflict between them, until "the weaker dies". But as the "old man", though crucified, never becomes extinct in this life, this warfare between the flesh and the spirit never ceases until death. As these opposite moral principles operate through the same natural faculties and affections, it is a matter of course, that as the one gains strength the other must be proportionately weakened; and experience teaches that the most effectual way to subdue the power of sin is to nourish and exercise the principle of holiness.

Way and Means of the Recovery of Spiritual Decay

The heart knows its own bitterness; a stranger intermeddles not with it: none knows the groaning and laboring of a soul convinced of such spiritual decays, but he alone in whom they are. Hereon is it cast down to the earth, going mourning all the day long, though others know nothing of its sorrows: but it is of a far more sad consideration, to see men manifesting their inward decays by their outward fruits, and yet are little or not at all concerned therein.
Varieties in Person's Conversions - The Conversion of Thomas Halyburton

I have derived much satisfaction and, I hope, profit from the account which Thomas Halyburton, 1674-1712, gives of his religious experience; especially, because the account was given when the writer was advanced in years, and when his judgment was fully matured. Many youthful narratives of pious exercises are very fervent—but they are frothy, and marked with that kind of ignorance and self-confidence which arise from inexperience.

There is a gracious humiliation of soul before God for it. The gracious soul, when convinced of sin after great declensions, and recovered out of them, is deeply humbled; for it is brought to the dust before God. There is an evangelical repentance. The heart is broken for sin. That sacrifice is offered to God, which David offered rather than burnt offerings after his great fall. Psa. 51:16, 17, "For thou desirest not sacrifice, else would I give it; thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise." They are brought as Job was, after he had sinned, in complaining of God's dealings with him, to abhor themselves. Job 42:6.

Second, hence we may learn, that souls, who are in darkness, and as it were, in a wilderness, have no cause to be discouraged. For by the doctrine we learn that this is the way often, in order to hope and comfort. Persons are very often ready to be discouraged by this. God seems to frown. They have a sense of his anger. They cry to him, and he does not seem to hear their prayers. They have been striving for relief, but it seems to be to no purpose. They are in such circumstances, that everything looks dark; everything seems to be against them. They are lost in a wilderness. They cannot find the way out.

Scrupulosity - The Symptoms Of Spiritual Melancholy - 1780

Observations on the nature, causes and cure of melancholy: especially of that which is commonly called religious melancholy by Fawcett, Benjamin, 1715-1780 from wiki: Fawcett was born at Sleaford, Lincolnshire, on 16 August 1715, the youngest of ten children. He entered Philip Doddridge's dissenting academy at Northampton in 1738. In March 1741 Doddridge sent him to Whitchurch and Chester to collect evidence for an alibi in the case of Bryan Connell, then under sentence of death for murder (executed 3 April). In the same year Fawcett became minister of Paul's Meeting, Taunton, where he was ordained on 16 June 1742, forty ministers being present. Doddridge went down to take part in the ordination, and was presented to Fawcett's future wife. In 1745 Fawcett moved to Kidderminster. Here Doddridge visited him in 1747, and found his ministry prospering: he had 316 catechumens. He seems to have retained his popularity to the close of his life. He was very zealous in founding country congregations.

The awful apprehensions persons have had of their misery, have for the most part been increasing, the nearer they have approached to deliverance; though they often pass through many changes and alterations in the frame and circumstances of their minds. Sometimes they think themselves wholly senseless, and fear that the Spirit of God has left them, and that they are given up to judicial hardness; yet they appear very deeply exercised about that fear, and are in great earnest to obtain convictions again.

Why is there so much fear around us when the situation facing us is not at all unique? Answered. The Christian must trust God even when He appears to hide from him, Isa. 50: 10. Let him that walks in darkness, and sees no light, trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. This requires a holy boldness of faith indeed, to venture into God's presence, as Esther into Ahasuerus', when no smile is to be seen on his face, no golden scepter of the promise perceived by the soul, as held forth to embolden it to come near, then to press in with this noble resolution, 'If I perish, I perish,' Est. 4: 16. William Gurnall Note: the book quoted here, God's Terrible Voice in the City, 1666 is by Thomas Vincent not Thomas Boston

The sin against the Holy Spirit is not to be regarded simply as an isolated act, but as the external symptom of a heart so radically and finally set against God that no power which God can consistently use will ever save it. This sin, therefore, can be only the culmination of a long course of self- hardening and self-depraving. He who has committed it must be either profoundly indifferent to his own condition, or actively and bitterly hostile to God so that anxiety or fear on account of one's condition is evidence that it has not been committed. A H Strong, also an in depth historical study of the Man in the Iron Cage.

Seeking God For Years and Not Finding Him?

Pike and Hayward, (Cases of Conscience) "You would give all the world to be certain of an interest in the atoning blood, justifying righteous ness, and sanctifying grace of Christ; your hearts are set upon these things. But, because you cannot arrive at this comfortable satisfaction, you therefore hang down your heads, and go mourning all the day in darkness and fear." Must a law-work always precede conversion?

The Puritans and The Christian Soldier

The Christian is a soldier and must expect to encounter enemies, and to engage in many a severe conflict. The enemies of the Christian have been commonly divided into three classes—the world, the flesh, and the devil. But though these may be conceived of, and spoken of separately, they resist the Christian soldier by their combined powers. The devil is the agent; the world furnishes the bait or the object of temptation; and the flesh, or our own corrupt nature, is the subject on which the temptation operates. A ALEXANDER, The book by Thomas Goodwin quoted here is The Child of Light Walking in Darkness 1636.

Desiring Assurance - Am I Saved or Am I Not

J C Ryle: A believer may never arrive at this assured hope — and yet be saved. I would not desire to make one contrite heart sad — that God has not made sad; or to discourage one fainting child of God, or to leave the impression that men have no part or lot in Christ — unless they feel assurance. A person may have saving faith in Christ — and yet never enjoy an assured hope, such as the apostle Paul enjoyed. Holiness - Recorded in Studio

Sometimes I Feel I Would Rather Die than Pray!

Christian Experience Class 5 Archibald Alexander wrote, "Every Christian has set times for prayer and other devotional exercises; but if the mind on such occasions wanders off from the contemplation of those objects which should occupy it, such forgetfulness of God's presence, and vain wandering of the thoughts, are evidently sinful. And here is an arena on which many a severe conflict has been undergone, and where, alas! many overthrows have been experienced by the sincere worshiper of God. - Title based on Sermon of Alexander Whyte.

Dreams, Visions, Prophecies In Our Day - Examined - Christian Experience 4

Jonathan Edwards: One erroneous principle, that which scare any has proved more mischievous to the present glorious work of God, is a notion that it is God's manner in these days, to guide his saints, at least some that are more eminent, by inspiration, or immediate revelation. They suppose he makes known to them what shall come to pass hereafter, or what it is his will that they should do, by impressions made upon their minds, either with or without texts of Scripture; whereby something is made know to them, that is not taught in the Scripture. By such a notion the devil has a great door opened for him. {A Study of Archibald Alexander's Thoughts on Religious Experience - 4 }
