I. 1 John 5:7 Textual Problem 1 John 5:6-8, KJV 6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record [in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth], the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. In the KJV, the bracketed text [] only appears in 8 later manuscripts, & half of those are only marginal notes supplied by the copyist. II. DOCTRINES OPPOSING THE TRINITY (Tri-unity of God) A. Tri-theism: John Ascunages & John Philoponus taught that there were three who were God, but they were only related by loose association as, for example, Peter, James & John were disciples. B. Sabellianism (aka Modalism): Sabellius taught that God was single and indivisible, with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit being three modes or manifestations of one divine Person. C. Arianism: Arius denied the deity of Christ, teaching that only God was the uncreated One. According to Arius, Jesus was not eternal, & only existed through birth. Roots toward Arius' conclusions began with Tertullian, who subordinated the Son to the Father, & Origen, who taught that the Son was subordinate to the Father “in respect to essence.” Arianism condemned at Council of Nicea (325 AD).

THE TRIUNE GOD Question 6. How many Persons are in the Godhead? Answer. There are three Persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one God, the same in essence, equal in power and glory. —C. H. Spurgeon's A Puritan Catechism To meditate on the three Persons of the Godhead is to walk in thought through the garden eastward in Eden and to tread on holy ground. Our sincerest effort to grasp the incomprehensible mystery of the Trinity must remain forever futile, and only by deepest reverence can it be saved from actual presumption. —A. W. Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy The Trinity of God is a doctrine that is fundamental to the Christian faith; belief or disbelief in the Trinity marks orthodoxy from unorthodoxy. Human reason, however, cannot fathom the Trinity, nor can logic explain it, and, although the word itself is not found in the Scriptures, the doctrine is plainly taught in the Scriptures. The early church was forced to study the subject and affirm its truth because of the heretical teaching that arose opposing the Trinity. —Paul Enns, The Moody Handbook of Theology GOD'S TRIUNITY IN SCRIPTURE A. The Old Testament. Although not clearly defined, hints of God's Triune attribute appears in the Hebrew Scriptures. Deut 6:4; Gen 1:1-3. B. The Creation.
Our God is a Consuming Fire

I. OUR GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE The Lord God who is to be served by us, even as our covenant God, is a “consuming fire.” In love he is severely holy, sternly just. We hear people say— “God out of Christ is a consuming fire,” but that is an unwarrantable alteration of the text. The text is “Our God,” that is God in Christ is a consuming fire. “Our God” means God in covenant with us; it means our Father God, our God to whom we are reconciled to, even our God, is still a “consuming fire.” A large proportion of nominal Christians do not believe in this God. They profess to reverence a merciful God, but the moment you preach his justice they are indignant; the God who is a consuming fire is not accepted by this proud “nineteenth century.” —C. H. Spurgeon, Sermon #1639, 1882 A. Scriptural References: Deut 4:24 Heb 12:28-29 II. GOD'S FIERY CONSUMPTION IN PERSPECTIVE & APPLICATION The consuming fire of God's nature is directly connected to His being a jealous God (Deut 4:24), and therefore, His just wrath and righteous anger are distinct and set apart because God is holy. The consuming fire of His nature, being directly related to His holy justice, thus contains all His attributes, but most prominently, God's mercy, grace and love. The consuming fire of God's nature is applicable to all His creation, most especially to both the unbeliever and believer. A. Righteous Judgment Psa 97:5; 2 Pet 3:10-12 B. Effective Evangelism Psa 97:3; 1 Ki 18:1-40 C. Acceptable Worship (Behavior) Heb 12:28-29 (Lev 1:9; 6:9-10)

A Jealous God

GOD IS JEALOUS Let it be remembered then, that jealousy, like anger, is not evil in itself, or it could never be ascribed to God; his jealousy is ever a pure and holy flame…. some faint picture of that tender regard which God has for his own deity, honour, and supremacy, and the holy indignation which he feels towards those who violate his laws, offend his majesty, or impeach his character. —C. H. Spurgeon, Sermon #502, 1863 A. Scriptural References: Exodus 20:5; 34:14; Joshua 24:19; Nahum 1:2 Strong's Exhaustive Concordance קנא (qa-na) From H7065; jealous: - jealous. Compare H7072. {Ex 20:5; 34:14; Deut 4:24; 5:9; 6:15} קנוא (qa-nō) For H7067; jealous or angry: - jealous. {Josh 24:19; Nah 1:2} GOD'S JEALOUSY IN PERSPECTIVE & APPLICATION If God is infinitely greater than all His creation because He Himself is the greatest of all without equal, then it would be a wicked, insidious sin for God not to be jealous. A. Idolatry God is jealous over His deity. B. Reign God is jealous over His sovereignty. a. He hates sin b. He hates self-righteousness c. He hates false doctrine d. He hates self-exaltation C. Work God is jealous over His glory. a. We must therefore walk humbly before God b. We must therefore witness honestly before others D. Creatures God is jealous over His people. a. He is jealous of your love. b. He is jealous of your trust. c. He is jealous of your company. d. His jealousy is a comfort to us (marriage union)

Holy is the way God is. To be holy He does not conform to a standard. He is that standard. He is absolutely holy with an infinite, incomprehensible fullness of purity that is incapable of being other than it is. Because He is holy, His attributes are holy; that is, whatever we think of as belonging to God must be thought of as holy. God is holy and He has made holiness the moral condition necessary to the health of His universe. —Tozer, Knowledge of the Holy I. GOD'S HOLINESS IS TRANSCENDENT & PERVASIVE God's holiness means He is “set apart” & uniquely distinct (transcendence) from all His creation. His holiness is consistent with every other attribute & pervades (is common to or widespread) in all His attributes. IOW, all God's attributes are HOLY. II. GOD'S HOLINESS IN APPLICATION A. Helps Us Understand Sin's Reality 1 Jn 1:8-9 B. Reminds Us of Our Abiding Responsibility Heb 13:5 C. Provokes Us to Be Separate from the World 1 Pet 1:15-16; 2 Cor 6:14-18

I. GOD IS HOLY Power is God's hand and arm, omniscience his eye, mercy his bowels, eternity his duration, his holiness is his beauty... —Stephen Charnock, A Discourse on the Holiness of God He is absolutely distinct from all His creatures and is exalted above them in infinite majesty. —Louis Berkhof, Systematic Theology God's holiness is not simply the best we know infinitely bettered. We know nothing like the divine holiness. It stands apart, unique, unapproachable, incomprehensible and unattainable. The natural man is blind to it. He may fear God's power and admire His wisdom, but His holiness he cannot even imagine. —Aiden Wilson Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy II. THE HOLINESS OF GOD A. Pink, The Attributes of God The words “God is love” mean that love is an essential attribute of God. Love is something true of God but it is not God. It expresses the way God is in His unitary being, as do the words holiness, justice, faithfulness and truth. Because God is immutable He always acts like Himself, and because He is a unity He never suspends one of His attributes in order to exercise another. —A. W. Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy THE LOVE OF GOD A. Scriptural Refs: Gen 22:2; Jer 31:3; John 3:16; 1 Jn 4:8 “God is love and God is sovereign. His love disposes Him to desire our everlasting welfare and His sovereignty enables Him to secure it.” —Tozer, Knowledge of the Holy Strong's Exhaustive Concordance אהב (ahav) A primitive root; to have affection for (sexually or otherwise): - (be-) love (-d, -ly, -r), like, friend. אהבה (ahavah) Feminine of H158 and meaning the same: - love. αγαπαω (agapao) Perhaps from ἄγαν agan (much; or compare [H5689]); to love (in a social or moral sense): - (be-) love (-ed). Compare G5368. GOD'S LOVE IS CONSISTENT WITH ALL HIS ATTRIBUTES God's love cannot conflict or contradict His other attributes. Therefore, God's love is Incomprehensible, Self-existent, Self-sufficient, etc.

He is at once faithful and immutable, so all His words and acts must be and remain faithful.... He is His own reason for all He is and does.
GOD IS INFINITELY WISE All God's acts are done in perfect wisdom, first for His own glory, and then for the highest good of the greatest number for the longest time.
LESSON 1: The Incomprehensible God God is incomprehensible, but knowable. LESSON 2: The Self-existent God God is independent in His divine Being and independent from everything else, causing all things to depend upon Him. LESSON 3: The Self-sufficient God God is complete and wholly sufficient in His Being and needs nothing in His creation or from His creation to aid or enhance His perfections, else He would be less than perfect and complete. LESSONS 4-5: The Eternal God God is eternal because He is self-existent, and therefore, independent of time. God is eternal because He is self-sufficient, and thus, has no needs relative to time.

The Eternal God, Part Two

1. God is eternal because He is self-existent, and therefore, independent of time. God is eternal because He is self-sufficient, and thus, has no needs relative to time. 2. Consider the gift of eternal life in John 3:16. We are confined to time so we cannot just will eternal life as ours. It must be an eternal gift and it must be granted by an eternal Giver. Man must be given eternal life by God (God's sovereignty); therefore, man can be denied eternal life because of his rejection of an eternal God (man's responsibility). 3. The doctrinal truth of God's eternity can be applied for our spiritual growth as well as our comfort and encouragement. a. Rom 8:28 How can we apply this truth w/respect to God's eternity? b. Rom 5:1 How can we apply this truth w/respect to God's eternity? (also Jas 1:2) c. 1 Jn 4:8 How can we apply this truth w/respect to God's eternity? d. 1 Cor 13:13 Three important Greek words: πιστις (pistis) ελπις (elpis) αγαπη (agape)

Scripture Refs: Job 35:7 Psalm 50:8-12 & Malachi 3:6-9 John 5:26a Acts 17:24-25 Romans 11:34-36 (quot. Isa 40:13; Job 41:11) Philippians 2:6 1. God is complete and wholly sufficient in His Being and needs nothing in His creation or from His creation to aid or enhance His perfections, else He would be less than perfect and complete; and therefore, be something less than almighty God. 2. God does not need our worship. 3. God does not need our love. 4. God does not need our defense. 5. God does not need our witness. 6. One reason the doctrine of this attribute may be difficult to fully grasp is that it is directly connected to several other attributes: a. God's Immutability b. God's Eternity c. God's Omnipresence d. God's Omniscience e. God's Omnipotence f. God's Immanence

The Incomprehensible God

Does God exist? General Revelation, Psa 19:1; Rom 1:18-20 Who is God and what is He like? Special Revelation – His Word by the prophets (Heb 1:1); the living Word of His Son (Heb 1:2-3) >>> “God is incomprehensible, but knowable.” What is God like? He has revealed Himself by His attributes. What does this mean? “For while the name of God is secret and His essential nature incomprehensible, He in condescending love has by revelation declared certain things to be true of Himself. These we call His attributes.” —A. W. Tozer, Knowledge of the Holy OUR GOD IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE 1. Scripture Refs: Deut 29:29; Job 11:7-9; Psa 40:5; 106:2; Isa 55:8; Ecc 8:17; Rom 11:33-34 QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER… 1. Is special revelation a greater form of worship than general revelation? Why or why not? Read Rom 12:2 & Eph 4:23. How is your answer effected by these verses? 2. How does understanding the attributes of God strengthen your faith and help your growth in grace? 3. How does understanding that God is incomprehensible help you in your Christian walk?
